Abstract

Abstract

Communicative efficiency can be measured with conventions. Besides linguistic means, pictures and diagrams are also an expression of such conventions. In the practice of technical editing, this refers to multimodal text types with technical language elements, photographs, technical drawings, various types of diagrams, etc. Alexander Holste uses the example of the text type specification sheet to show how an inter-disciplinary team of engineers, lawyers, business economists, etc. negotiates these conventions. The different, technically justified ideas of the text type conventions, especially with regard to the choice of multimodal means of expression, become clearly apparent. Requirement specifications are created in the context of the tendering of public contracts by public authorities. Since such contracts represent an important field of work for the companies involved, the efficient design of the specifications is highly relevant from a business management point of view. Alexander Holste, Dr. phil., studied German as well as business administration in Essen and Turin and headed the technical editorial department of a public transport company before he started teaching professional and scientific writing at the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2009, especially for engineering scientists. His research interests lie in the fields of semiotics, text linguistics, technical communication and writing didactics.

Abstract

Map: Shimon An-Ski. Der Khurbn in Polen, Galizien und der Bukowina: http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:1286.The Russian Jewish ethnographer and writer Shimon An-Ski travelled during World War I the war torn Austrian-Hungarian regions of Galicia, Bucovina, and Poland. He depicted in his Yiddish diary, which is now completely available in German, his impressions from this seminal catastrophe of the 20th century including reports from eyewitnesses. In this key text, he documented the devastation of the war and the destruction of the Jewish life worlds in those regions, which belong today to Poland and Ukraine, as well as the charity efforts of the Russian Jews to help their Austrian brethren, and accentuated aspects of testimony and international law.

The evolution of knowledge management theory and the special emphasis on human and social capital sets new challenges for knowledge-driven and technology-enabled innovation. Emerging technologies including big data and analytics have significant implications for sustainability, policy making, and competitiveness. This edited volume promotes scientific research into the potential contributions knowledge management can make to the new era of innovation and social inclusive economic growth. We are grateful to all the contributors of this edition for their intellectual work. The organization of the relevant debate is aligned around three pillars: SECTION A. DATA, KNOWLEDGE, HUMAN AND SOCIAL CAPITAL FOR INNOVATION: We elaborate on the new era of knowledge types and the emerging forms of social capital and their impact on technology-driven innovation. Topics include: Social Networks; Smart Education; Social Capital; Corporate Innovation; Disruptive Innovation; Knowledge integration; Enhanced Decision-Making. SECTION B. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT & BIG DATA ENABLED INNOVATION: In this section, knowledge management and big data applications and systems are presented. Selective topic include: Crowdsourcing Analysis; Natural Language Processing; Data Governance; Knowledge Extraction; Ontology Design Semantic Modeling SECTION C. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: In the section, the debate on the impact of knowledge management and big data research to sustainability is promoted with integrative discussion of complementary social and technological factors including: Big Social Networks on Sustainable Economic Development; Business Intelligence

Abstract

There is no denying the role of empirical research in finance and the remarkable progress of empirical techniques in this research field. This Special Issue focuses on the broad topic of “Empirical Finance” and includes novel empirical research associated with financial data. One example includes the application of novel empirical techniques, such as machine learning, data mining, wavelet transform, copula analysis, and TV-VAR, to financial data. The Special Issue includes contributions on empirical finance, such as algorithmic trading, market efficiency, market microstructure, portfolio theory and asset allocation, asset pricing models, liquidity risk premium, currency crisis, return predictability, and volatility modeling.

Abstract

This book presents cross-discipline studies covering aspects ranging from animal science to social/consumer sciences and psychology, with the aim to collect and disseminate information promoting the continuous enhancement of animal welfare by improving stakeholders’ perception of animal welfare. Although animal welfare is about how the animals perceive the surrounding environment, the actual welfare of the animals is dependent on how the stakeholders perceive and weigh animal welfare. The stakeholders can, either directly (i.e., through stock-people interaction with the animals) or indirectly (e.g., when retailers and consumers are willing to pay more for high welfare animal-based products), affect the way animals are kept and handled.

Abstract

Some of the most pressing contemporary issues (ecological crisis, migration and integration, fragmented worldviews, social media, fake news, extremist politics and terrorism) can be understood more profoundly through how they interact with both individual and collective forces of nostalgia. Nostalgia is politics, but these politics are also interwoven with media and culture. Notwithstanding how nostalgia is used or contextualized in terms of politics and social practices, commodification or personal development, its power is primarily situated within its efficacy as a governing, influential human emotion. The vast and luminous contributions to this special issue on contemporary nostalgia are all investigating the role different aesthetic media formats (film, music, literature, computer games) plays in nostalgic negotiations with style, history, migration, love, nationalism, diaspora, irony, modernity, colonial and postcolonial discourses, and adoption. Mutually, these essays stand out as important, original, critical contributions to the expanding field of nostalgia studies and offer a valued insight on our world.
