Abstract

In these times the processes of poverty and social inequality have increased, as well as the scenarios of violence and death that involve people, the planet and life itself. The destructive features of the late international capitalist order have placed the life-death relationship at the center of social, humanistic, ecological and artistic discussion. This book invites us to rethink the contemporary world through the discussion on biopolitics, necropolitics, juvenicide and narcoculture, and offers an analysis of the conformation of the features that emphasize the inequalities, distinctive of some sectors of the middle and upper classes.

Abstract

"Heroes have to die because they are human. Their death, however, may vary in its relevance to their status as heroic figures. In Greek antiquity, death is the prerequisite for heroisation; expecting to continue their existence in the afterlife, martyrs sacrifice their lives in acts of killing that are often taken to the extreme; the war hero follows the call to commit his life to a greater good, without death being the necessary goal. Based on examples from the time between antiquity and the present age, the contributions to this book show from an interdisciplinary perspective how heroic action, dying, and death are respectively related to each other and how the representations of heroic dying mediate between heroes and their audience. The essays discuss questions such as: How do heroic figures die? What role does violence play in the process? How is the hero’s death presented and staged? What types of media in particular lend themselves to depictions of heroic death and the death of the hero? With contributions byAchim Aurnhammer, Cornelia Brink, Ulrich Bröckling, Jürgen Dendorfer, Nicolas Detering, Peter Eich, Nicole Falkenhayner, Andreas Gelz, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, Barbara Korte, Dietmar Neutatz, Johanna Pink, Sitta von Reden, Anna Schreurs-Morét, Magnus Striet, Stefan Tilg, Ralf von den Hoff. Abstract

The politician Aldo Moro was abducted and killed in 1978 by the terrorist organisation the Red Brigades. The media then stylised Moro as a ‘state martyr’. This volume deals with the highly topical question concerning the performativity of this concept in the tension between democratic states and terrorism and reconstructs a crucial phase of post-war policy in Italy on the basis of media sources on the Moro case. What role does a term from Christian antiquity play within modern sociopolitical discourses? What changes has the term ‘martyr’ undergone in European religious and cultural history? On the basis of these questions, this study opens up an interdisciplinary theoretical horizon in order to understand the role of religious motifs in sociopolitical contexts. It brings a central new dimension to the secularisation debate, which sees secularisation as a new configuration of politics and religion.

Abstract

Racist police checks are part of everyday life in Europe. They make it dramatically visible who is not considered a fellow citizen. While much of the dominance society finds this racist practice normal, more and more people are no longer prepared to accept it without resistance. The volume brings together scientific, artistic and activist contributions to the social backgrounds and modes of action of racial profiling and the possibilities of intersectional anti-racist resistance. The focus is on Switzerland, supplemented by perspectives from authors who are familiar with the German context.
