Abstract

This book presents a range of ongoing studies on atypical language development in Romance languages. Despite the steady increase in the number of studies on typical language development, there is still little research about atypical language development, especially in Romance languages. This book covers four main conditions causing atypical language development. Part I explores the linguistic and communicative characteristics of preterm children learning Romance languages. The focus of Part II centers on children with Specific Language Impairment. Hearing Loss in Part III is another relevant factor leading to atypical language development. The final part IV zeroes in on genetic syndromes coupled to cognitive impairment with special attention to language development. This book presents a much needed overview of the most recent findings in all relevant fields dealing with atypical language development in children speaking Romance languages.

Abstract

Abstract

The decades around 1800 constitute the seminal period of European nationalism. The linguistic corollary of this was the rise of standard language ideology, from Finland to Spain, and from Iceland to the Habsburg Empire. Amidst these international events, the case of Dutch in the Netherlands offers a unique example. After the rise of the ideology from the 1750s onwards, the new discourse of one language–one nation was swiftly transformed into concrete top-down policies aimed at the dissemination of the newly devised standard language across the entire population of the newly established Dutch nation-state. Thus, the Dutch case offers an exciting perspective on the concomitant rise of cultural nationalism, national language planning and standard language ideology. This study offers a comprehensive yet detailed analysis of these phenomena by focussing on the ideology underpinning the new language policy, the institutionalisation of this ideology in metalinguistic discourse, the implementation of the policy in education, and the effects of the policy on actual language use.

Abstract

Little is known about the conditions that led to German-Swiss diglossia. Based on public discourse about Swiss German, the study shows that with respect to the history of language awareness, today’s typical bilingualism in Swiss German and standard German became consolidated in the 19th century in close relation to societal processes. The study is a major contribution to the linguistic history of German-speaking Switzerland.

Abstract

“Language can be this incredibly forceful material—there’s something about it where if you canstrip away its history, get to the materiality of it, it can rip into you like claws” (Hill in Vischer1995, 11). This arresting image by media artist Gary Hill evokes the nearly physical force oflanguage to hold recipients in its grip. That power seems to lie in the material of language itself, which, with a certain rawness, may captivate or touch, pounce on, or even harm its addressee.Hill’s choice of words is revealing: ‘rip into’ suggests not only a metaphorical emotional pull butalso the literal physicality of linguistic attack. It is no coincidence that the statement comes froma media artist, since media artworks often use language to produce a strong sensorial stimulus.Media artworks not only manipulate language as a material in itself, but they also manipulate theviewer’s perceptual channels. The guises and effects of language as artistic material are the topicof this book, The Literariness of Media Art.

Abstract

This volume examines the loanwords found in 18 late-Byzantine histories and chronicles. In order to analyze the lexical interferences in the lexicon of late-Byzantine historical literature, all words were included (except place names and proper names) that substantiate language contact. The editors place special emphasis on the sociolinguistic context in which the loanwords were used.
