Abstract

At the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra we can observe a collection of five geometric models, mounted on boxes or wooden brackets, in all analogous to the idealized by Théodore Olivier (1793-1853) to expose some of the contents of the descriptive geometry. Deprived of his first function of teaching support, the models of descriptive geometry continue to carry out the important mission of reminding us of an already distant past but we must not forget. This is also the main objective of this text, dedicated to the class of descriptive geometry of the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra and his collection of Olivier models.

Abstract

This book, which comprises four different parts, divided into eighteen chapters, puts forward an analysis drawing both from philosophy and from literary hermeneutics. Its guiding thread are the creative or «poietic» processes through which the «self» forms and transforms itself as a configuration of symbols and a work of language, in the laboratory of (auto)biographic memory and imagination. The book sheds light on the open, exploratory and experimental character of literature in general and of the experiences of writing and narrating in particular. But it also emphasizes the elusive, unstable and perhaps never fully graspable trait of these experiences in a first person perspective. In the book, the processes of subjectivity and identity (personal or collective) are explored and the mechanisms for interpreting life and world are investigated.

Abstract

Throughout History, networks of scientists and knowledge exchange have been formed, and scientific mobility has been promoted both at the level of the academy and at political level. In the 1940s the “Europe of mobility” began to be drawn through, among other things, the creation of centers of critical reflection, involving not only academics but also intellectuals and politicians, who would contribute to the design of a “Europe of Education” and, in a broad sense, of a Europe of Knowledge. In this context, this collective volume gathers original contributions that focus on education and citizenship; History books; the ERASMUS program, both the academic and the military; the European credit transfer system; memory and heritage.

Abstract

With contributions by some of the leading Portuguese and Spanish speaking experts in the philosophy of J. G. Fichte (1762-1814), this book focuses mainly the relation between the universality of human reason postulated by transcendental philosophy, of which Fichte is the main representative between Kant and Husserl, and its translation into concrete political, historical and cultural forms. The collected texts include significant references to the entire Fichte’s work, extending from the Rectification of the Public's Judgment on the French Revolution of 1793, until the revaluation of the importance of the role of Religion and History in the Theory of State, of 1813; between those milestones, the collected studies consider both the classic of the rational theory of the State and Law, the Fundamentals of Natural Law of 1797, and the classic at the basis of German linguistic and cultural nationalism, the Adresses to the German Nation, of 1807. The relationship between Philosophy and Law, the rational foundation of the legitimacy of State power, the relationship between Morals and Law, Human History, Revolution, Christianity, war or despotism, are issues whose discussion at the dawn of the contemporary world marked our time indelibly.

Abstract

The Great War and Colonial Wars in Sub-Saharan Africa (1914-1974) seeks to situate world conflicts especially that of World War I, in the larger landscape of colonized Africa, and does not shy away from capturing more particular, conflict-centred experiences Luso-Germanic, in the emigration, in the feminine condition and in the performance of the metropolitan Regiment of Infantry 14, of Viseu, Angola. For its part, another contribution will seek to establish bridges between the peace treaties of 1919 and the 'revival of territorial claims over southern Portuguese Africa'. On the idleness of these troubled times, of highlighting the writings on football and the use of the automobile in the exotic itineraries of such a vast and diversified Empire.

Abstract

In this book individual options of mobility are described and analyzed they as part of a long history that has been written for centuries by many Portuguese emigrants of different generations and qualifications. The difficulties of today are lessened, the biographic stories are, as a rule, successful and reveal people who have found a way forward. The same individual options, however, are also the expression that a deep evil attacks Europe, making the most skilled in the peripheral countries attracted to the central countries, where resources are available, leaving the least developed countries economy without knowledge and innovation. It resonates in the murmur of the voices of those we hear an experience that longs to be shared and understood in its fullness.

Abstract

The discovery and introduction of penicillin into therapeutics changed the prognostic of infectious diseases, altered the path of medicine and saved innumerous lives. It was a major discovery in the history of medicine and represented the starting point for research that led to the discovery of other antibiotics. Portugal was one of the first European countries, non-participant in the II World War, to obtain penicillin for civilian use. Good diplomatic relations between Portugal, Brazil and the United States of America (USA) were decisive in attaining penicillin for our country. Portuguese pharmacists and physicians immediately perceived the significance of the antibiotic and developed innumerous studies pertaining the clinical applications and quality of the antibiotic.

Abstract

From a first attempt to gather fundamental bibliography for anthropological research in Angola came out in 1983 an interim text. With the contribution of more collaborators and completing and updating this first text now comes this version of "Angola: anthropological bibliography", a working tool that we hope will be useful to many of our research colleagues. The print run has been purposely limited as an update as possible permanent. In this sense all suggestions and possible corrections will be welcomed so that all Africanists who are interested in anthropological research about Angola is available a working tool which is not exhaustive already represents very diverse information in the field of anthropological sciences. In addition to renewing its thanks to her first-hour colleague, Isilda Figueiras, I want to extend them to the researchers who have joined this work and have contributed, each with their share, to the preparation of this bibliography. Abstract

Power neither exists nor stands without symbols. In a space where awareness of ethnic diversity is increasingly tending to revalue the dynamics of the traditional, it is not merely academic to provide a glimpse of the rich symbology elaborated by the different forms of organizing traditional power. This will also be one of the many concrete ways to "gather data to define and illustrate the cultural identity of peoples Bantu, of yesteryear and today," aim "Bantu International Center for Civilization", an organization recently created to study and preserve the cultural heritage common to Africa's Banta. Angola is a field particularly rich in cultural traditions of this kind. In its territory numerous principalities and families were developed in which the power exercised under varied forms of royalty. This diversity sought to account for the selection of exposed objects; In writing texts, however, it was not possible to go beyond the most representative groups: the Kongo (in particular the Woyo subgroup) and the Ovimbundu. Suffering from the vicissitudes of different African histories (pre-colonial, colonial, post-colonial) the symbols of power survived even when confined only to their ritual component. There was even an enlargement determined by the incorporation of acculturated symbols, namely religious ones (crucifix and rosary, among others). The different anthropological collections around the world are in some cases unique testimonies of this "show of power" that only disappeared in appearance as it is still very much alive inside. Some testimonies of these symbols were collected less than half a century ago (M. A. F. de Oliveira), others are reborn from an apparent state of lethargy taking on new expression (see in particular the growing claim of the role of women in the transformation of Angolan society and the female component of power in the tradition of Kongo – M. L. Rodrigues de Areia); still others manifest themselves in the consistent demand that the holders of power assume themselves as defenders of life and what conditions it - a clear reflection of the traditional concept of the charismatic chief (sacred royalty) to whom the fertility of the fields such as that of women was imputed. women, the occurrence of rain as the scourge of drought. The analysis of the testimonies of traditional royals, which are of the past, must not only raise, besides the inference of the symbolization mechanisms resulting from social structures, also from the past, the ever- present question of the "systems of power and the conditions of its formation and transformation" O. Houart ); on the one hand, they provide the evocation of a past that reaffirms itself as an element of cultural identity; on the other, they justify a new discourse on the exercise of power. [M. L. RODRIGUES DE AREIA]
