Depuis une vingtaine d'années, les démocraties occidentales se sont transformées en sociétés de plus en plus vigilantes et répressives. Elles se sont dotées d'un ensemble de règles qui réduisent la liberté des individus au nom de la sécurité collective. Si Orwell avait posé la propagande comme complément indissociable de Big Brother, il apparaît que le point d'orgue des politiques répressives soit la question sécuritaire. Or, celle-ci est fondée - comme l'avait également vu l'auteur de 1984 - sur l'existence d'un ennemi permanent (le terroriste, le pirate informatique, la grande criminalité, etc.). Dès lors, la contrepartie de l'exigence de sécurité est l'abandon d'une large part de la liberté. Ce livre s'intéresse à cette conséquence majeure pour le devenir de notre société en termes de surveillance individuelle. Il recense les diverses modalités de la traçabilité électronique de l'individu aujourd'hui et s'attache aux problèmes juridiques nouveaux qu'elles soulèvent, notamment en matière de protection des droits et des libertés, et de garantie de la vie privée. L'impact juridique et politique des nouvelles technologies telles que la vidéosurveillance, les cartes bancaires, les puces RFID, la biométrie, l'Internet et le piratage électronique, y fait donc l'objet d'une particulière attention. Une large place est également accordée aux techniques policières (systèmes d'écoute, fichage) et aux techniques militaires de surveillance (système ECHELON, système HERISSON) ainsi qu'aux méthodes plus subtiles de contrôle social en matière de communication. L'ambition de cet ouvrage est enfin de présenter la question de la surveillance d'une manière à la fois thématique, synthétique et documentée à partir des diverses technologies qui peuvent affecter tout un chacun dans sa vie quotidienne.

Enterobacteriaceae are spread worldwide and the diseases they cause may be fatal especially in immunocompromised patients. Moreover, the high prevalence of ESBL producing Salmonella and Shigella species diseases worldwide suggests major underlying safety issues. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2015, approximately 220 million children contract diarrhoeal diseases every year and 96 000 die. As a result, the increase in single or multi drug-resistant foodborne bacterial pathogens is of major public health concern. Moreover, resistance to antimicrobials was found among Salmonella spp and Campylobacter spp from animals and food, and since fluoroquinolones became licensed for use in animal foods, especially for poultry, the rate of fluoroquinolone resistant Salmonella spp and Campylobacter spp in animals and human food, and then in human infections, rapidly increased. To that purpose, the findings of the conducted studies in the book chapters, 1) highlight surveillance studies reporting the occurrence and distribution of resistance to antimicrobial agents, namely, to third generation cephalosporins, carbapenems and fluoroquinolones, 2) describe the mechanisms of transmission of resistance determinants from animals, food products and clinical specimens, that allow implementation of appropriate measures to control their spread and adopt appropriate therapeutic measures, and 3) provide treatment options, useful to medical practice.

The Funambulist Pamphlets is published as part of the Documents Initiative imprint of the Center for Transformative Media, Parsons The New School for Design, a transdisciplinary media research initiative bridging design and the social sciences, and dedicated to the exploration of the transformative potential of emerging technologies upon the foundational practices of everyday life across a range of settings.

Nous vivons sons doute une fin de cycle de vie d’anciennes technologies disciplinaires et totalitaires. Les techniques basées sur le contrôle des corps (les disciplines), des populations et des pensées (les idéologies totalitaires) marquent le pas. Cependant, les avancées technologiques rapides offrent des opportunités pour des projets d’écoute et de couverture vidéo de grande ampleur. Les logiciels de reconnaissance faciale, les drones équipés de caméras, les systèmes de localisation implantables posent à nouveau de manière aiguë la question des libertés pour une démocratie du xxie siècle. Ce livre fournit tous les éléments du débat, tels qu’ils ont été proposés à un jury de citoyens pour la première “conférence citoyenne” organisée sur ce thème. Cette procédure de “conférence citoyenne” a permis d’évaluer finement les dispositifs de télésurveillance. Ce livre invite à penser la démocratie pour le xxie siècle. Le vingtième siècle s’est bien souvent limité à une “conseilliste” de la démocratie, c’est-à-dire à la simple revendication d’un partage au pouvoir de décision. Cette évaluation participative des technologies préfigure une démocratie réflexive, préservant et aménageant des gains de liberté dans le changement technologique.

In the Research Topic "History of Chemoattractant Research" we will portray some of the key discoveries that helped to transform cell migration research into a global playing field within immunology (and beyond). Early progress had a profound effect on both, academia and industry. Today, numerous academic laboratories are fully engaged in compiling a detailed road map describing the highly complex network of immune and tissue cells that respond to chemoattractants. Industrial research, on the other hand, centers on drugs that interfere with immune cell traffic in inflammatory diseases and cancer. The following series of “short stories” provide personal accounts on key discoveries. The individual molecular discoveries enabled numerous research laboratories worldwide to unravel their significance in steady-state or pathological immune processes. Although ground-breaking in their own right, it is therefore worth emphasizing that rapid progress in chemoattractant research was made possible by many other laboratories who were not directly involved in the original discovery process. Therefore, the authors of this mini-series are discussing their findings in the context of time, place and subsequent progress enabled by their discoveries. It is hoped that a wide readership will find these accounts entertaining as well as educational although those who wish to gain a more detailed knowledge are referred to the many outstanding reviews on chemokines and other chemoattractants.
