This e-book is the result of a panel organized in the Fifth European Congress of African Studies (ECAS 5) that took place in Lisbon in June 2013. We thought of organizing this panel on “Press Freedom and Right to Information in Africa” since the question of freedom, especially press freedom, is presently extremely important in all African countries. However, it is not yet well known, both in the academic context and by the public.

Transnational civil society networks have become increasingly important democratizing actors in global politics. Still, the exploration of democracy in such networks remains conceptually and methodologically challenging. Practice theory provides a framework to study democracy as routinized performances even in contexts of fluid boundaries, temporal relations and a diffuse constituency. The author attempts to understand how new forms of democratic practice emerge in the interaction between political actors and their structural environments.

In 2011, political protests sprang up across the world. In the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, the United States unlikely people sparked or led massive protest campaigns from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street. These protests were made up of educated and precariously employed young people who challenged the legitimacy of their political leaders, exposed a failure of representation, and expressed their dissatisfaction with their place in the aftermath of financial and economic crisis.This book interrogates what impacts—if any—this global protest cycle had on politics and policy and shows the sometimes unintended ways it continues to influence contemporary political dynamics throughout the world. In May 2013, a small group of protesters made camp in Istanbul's Taksim Square, protesting the privatisation of what had long been a vibrant public space. When the police responded to the demonstration with brutality, the protests exploded in size and force, quickly becoming a massive statement of opposition to the Turkish regime. This book assembles a collection of field research, data, theoretical analyses, and cross-country comparisons to show the significance of the protests both within Turkey and throughout the world.

This book provides a detailed historical analysis of the Swiss Parliament. It sheds light on how the profiles of parliamentarians have evolved over a century, and recounts the various legislative reforms affecting their status. The author analyses the impact of these reforms on the collective biography of the members of Parliament. The rich data allow for an empirically grounded reflection on how well the parliamentary composition represents the population, for instance in terms of their gender or level of education, and an understanding of the processes of democratization and professionalization of the institution. This research has received a prize from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lausanne and an incentive award from the Swiss Society for Parliamentary Questions. Andrea Pilotti has a PhD in Political Sciences from the University of Lausanne. He is Research Manager at the Research Observatory for Regional Politics and member of the Swiss Elite Observatory at the University of Lausanne’s Faculty of Social and Political sciences.
