Abstract

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) make up an extremely interesting class ofmaterials. On the one hand GNRs share many of the superlative properties ofgraphene, while on the other hand they display an exceptional degree of tunabilityof their optoelectronic properties. The presence or absence of correlatedlow-dimensional magnetism, or of a widely tunable band gap, is determined by theboundary conditions imposed by the width, crystallographic symmetry and edgestructure of the nanoribbons. In combination with additional controllable parameterslike the presence of heteroatoms, tailored strain, or the formation ofheterostructures, the possibilities to shape the electronic properties of GNRsaccording to our needs are fantastic. However, to really benefit from that tunabilityand harness the opportunities offered by GNRs, atomic precision is strictly requiredin their synthesis. This can be achieved through an on-surface synthesis approach,in which one lets appropriately designed precursor molecules to react in a selectiveway that ends up forming GNRs. In this chapter we review the structure-propertyrelations inherent to GNRs, the synthesis approach and the ways in which the variedproperties of the resulting ribbons have been probed, finalizing with selectedexamples of demonstrated GNR applications.

Abstract

This work introduces novel techniques for the fabrication of bio-inspired hierarchical micro- and nanostructures. The enormous potential of these techniques is demonstrated by presenting a synthetic gecko-like adhesive matching the adhesion and self-cleaning of geckos very closely and a nanofur which is superhydrophobic, superoleophilic, underwater air-retaining, and even self-healing when surface treated.

Abstract

The improvement of fabrication resolutions is an eternal challenge for miniaturizing and enhancing the integration degrees of devices. Laser processing is one of the most widely used techniques in manufacturing due to its high flexibility, high speed, and environmental friendliness. The fabrication resolution of laser processing is, however, limited by the diffraction limit. Recently, much effort has been made to overcome the diffraction limit in nano fabrication. Specifically, combinations of multiphoton absorption by ultrafast lasers and the threshold effect associated with a Gaussian beam profile provide fabrication resolutions far beyond the diffraction limit. The use of the optical near-field achieves nano ablation with feature sizes below 100 nm. Multiple pulse irradiation from the linearly polarized ultrafast laser produces periodic nanostructures with a spatial period much smaller than the wavelength. Unlimited diffraction resolutions can also be achieved with shaped laser beams. In the meanwhile, lasers are also widely used for the synthesis of nano materials including fullerenes and nano particles. In view of the rapid advancement of this field in recent years, this Special Issue aims to introduce the state-of-the-art in nano fabrication and nano lithography, based on laser technologies, by leading groups in the field.

Abstract

Non-thermal plasma technology is one of those techniques that suffer relatively little from diffusion limits, slow kinetics, and complex geometries compared to more traditional liquid-based chemical surface modification techniques. Combined with a lack of solvents, preservation of the bulk properties, and fast treatment times; it is a well-liked technique for the treatment of materials for biomedical applications. In this book chapter, a review will be given on what the scientific community determined to be essential to obtain appropriate scaffolds for tissue engineering and how plasma scientists have used non-thermal plasma technology to accomplish this. A distinction will be made depending on the scaffold fabrication technique, as each technique has its own set of specific problems that need to be tackled. Fabrication techniques will include traditional fabrication methods, rapid prototyping, and electrospinning. As for the different plasma techniques, both plasma activation and grafting/polymerization will be included in the review and linked to the in-vitro/in-vivo response to these treatments. The literature review itself is preceded by a more general overview on cell communication, giving useful insights on how surface modification strategies should be developed.

Abstract

Abstract

Flexible and stretchable electronics are receiving tremendous attention as future electronics due to their flexibility and light weight, especially as applications in wearable electronics. Flexible electronics are usually fabricated on heat sensitive flexible substrates such as plastic, fabric or even paper, while stretchable electronics are usually fabricated from an elastomeric substrate to survive large deformation in their practical application. Therefore, successful fabrication of flexible electronics needs low temperature processable novel materials and a particular processing development because traditional materials and processes are not compatible with flexible/stretchable electronics. Huge technical challenges and opportunities surround these dramatic changes from the perspective of new material design and processing, new fabrication techniques, large deformation mechanics, new application development and so on. Here, we invited talented researchers to join us in this new vital field that holds the potential to reshape our future life, by contributing their words of wisdom from their particular perspective.
