Abstract

Comparé à l’ensemble du salariat en France, celui du secteur culturel se singularise nettement : les emplois y sont plus flexibles, les contrats plus souvent à durée limitée, les rémunérations plus dispersées. Les employeurs sont plus souvent de taille modeste et implantés en région parisienne. Le salariat y est plus jeune et masculin. Une analyse approfondie révèle cependant que ces caractéristiques globales tiennent principalement à certains domaines d’activité culturels (le spectacle, l’enseignement artistique et de loisirs) où la grande flexibilité de l’emploi, les faibles volumes individuels d’activité, la rotation (turn over) des salariés sont la règle. Dans d’autres domaines culturels (l’édition, l’architecture, le patrimoine), la physionomie du salariat s’écarte peu de celle observée dans l’ensemble de l’économie (prépondérance du CDI et du travail à temps plein). Dans les domaines où l’emploi est le plus flexible, la pluriactivité est particulièrement répandue : les salariés travaillent alors pour plusieurs activités culturelles (par exemple, en combinant des emplois dans le spectacle vivant et dans la création visuelle), mais surtout interviennent à la fois dans le champ culturel et à l’extérieur de celui-ci.

Abstract

This twenty-third ICMI Study addresses for the first time mathematics teaching and learning in the primary school (and pre-school) setting, while also taking international perspectives, socio-cultural diversity and institutional constraints into account. One of the main challenges of designing the first ICMI primary school study of this kind is the complex nature of mathematics at the early level. Accordingly, a focus area that is central to the discussion was chosen, together with a number of related questions. The broad area of Whole Number Arithmetic (WNA), including operations and relations and arithmetic word problems, forms the core content of all primary mathematics curricula. The study of this core content area is often regarded as foundational for later mathematics learning. However, the principles and main goals of instruction on the foundational concepts and skills in WNA are far from universally agreed upon, and practice varies substantially from country to country. As such, this study presents a meta-level analysis and synthesis of what is currently known about WNA, providing a useful base from which to gauge gaps and shortcomings, as well as an opportunity to learn from the practices of different countries and contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

Hardwood-dominated temperate forests (mostly in Eastern North America, Europe, North East Asia) provide valuable renewable timber and numerous ecosystem services. Many of these forests have been subjected to harvesting or conversion to agriculture, sometimes over centuries, that have greatly reduced their former extent and diversity. Natural regeneration following harvesting or during post-agricultural succession has often failed to restore these forests adequately. Past harvesting practices and the valuable timber of some species have led to a reduction in their abundance. The loss of apex predators has caused herbivore populations to increase and exert intense browsing pressure on hardwood regeneration, often preventing it. Particularly important are fruit, nut and acorn bearing species, because of their vital role in forest food webs and biodiversity. Restoring hardwood species to natural forests in which they were formerly more abundant will require a number of forest management actions (e.g., resistant hybrids, deer exclosures/protectors, enrichment planting, underplanting, etc.). Similarly, reforesting areas that were once natural forests will also require new silvicultural knowledge. Global warming trends will intensify the need for interventions to maintain the diversity and function of temperate hardwood forests, as well as for increase hardwood reforestation.
