Abstract

What questions does vocational and business education research deal with? The current yearbook provides answers to these questions: it addresses questions about the organisation, conditions and structures of vocational education and training. It discusses approaches to the development of expertise, the structures of 'dual' or 'dualistic' vocational education and training and the consequences of the academicisation of vocational education and training. Further contributions focus on vocational teaching, learning and teaching research as well as questions of higher education and teacher training research, including the specificities of part-time degree programmes. Finally, the authors ask about the significance of continuing vocational training for companies and employees in the skilled trades and about approaches for assessing trainees in company practice. The yearbook concludes with an overview of historical vocational textbook research.

Abstract

This book presents new developments in Scandinavian memory cultures related to World War II and the Holocaust by combining this focus with the perspective of history didactics. The theoretical framework of historical consciousness offers an approach linking individual and collective uses and re-uses of the past to the question how history can and should be taught. It also offers some examples of good practice in this field. The book promotes a teaching practice which, in taking the social constructivist notions of historical consciousness as a starting point, can contribute to self-reflecting and critical thinking – being fundamental for any democratic political culture.

Abstract

This edited volume, for the first time, presents examples for three categories of university courses in teaching the history of technology and science: introductory courses, object-oriented teaching and interdisciplinary teaching. The resulting overview encourages to experiment with new formats in teaching the history of technology and science, to foster exchange on such efforts and, not the least, to more comprehensively appreciate engagement in university teaching.

Abstract

There are numerous popular myths concerning Hispanic America in German and Austrian textbooks from the first decade of the 21st century, and thus there is a big gap between historical narratives in textbooks and the scientific historical discourse. An analysis of textbooks from four centuries shows, that some of the myths were introduced into the textbooks in the twentieth century – for example the “myth of the flat earth” of medieval times. The myths relating to Hispanic America and the images and assumptions they conveyed were important to many different groups throughout history, became incorporated into collective memory and were uncritically incorporated into German and Austrian textbooks.

Abstract

Jésabel Robin has been a lecturer in French for future primary-school teachers at the German-speaking Pädagogische Hochschule Bern (PH IVP) since 2007. She felt that most of her students were reluctant to their professional training in French, yet it is one of the subjects they are training to teach. Her research in language and culture pedagogy adopts social anthropological approaches with a view to study the attitude of the PH IVP students towards French. From mobility mapping to comprehensive interviews in self confrontation, she analyses diverse self-narratives and reveals a wide range of individual and collective representations of and about French. She also focuses on the pivotal effect of institutional experiences such as practical training in teaching French and mobility. These constraints trigger tensions between institutional thinking and individual experiences regarding French but also reveal gaps (so-called « interstices institutionnels ») within the institution itself. The author eventually suggests redesigning a few curricular aspects.

Abstract

The book presents the Invited Lectures given at 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-13). ICME-13 took place from 24th- 31st July 2016 at the University of Hamburg in Hamburg (Germany). The congress was hosted by the Society of Didactics of Mathematics (Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik - GDM) and took place under the auspices of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI). ICME-13 – the biggest ICME so far - brought together about 3500 mathematics educators from 105 countries, additionally 250 teachers from German speaking countries met for specific activities. The scholars came together to share their work on the improvement of mathematics education at all educational levels.. The papers present the work of prominent mathematics educators from all over the globe and give insight into the current discussion in mathematics education. The Invited Lectures cover a wide spectrum of topics, themes and issues and aim to give direction to future research towards educational improvement in the teaching and learning of mathematics education. This book is of particular interest to researchers, teachers and curriculum developers in mathematics education.
