Abstract

This research unravels the economic collapse of the Datoga pastoralists of central and northern Tanzania from the 1830s to the beginning of the 21st century. The research builds from the broader literature on continental African pastoralism during the past two centuries. Overall, the literature suggests that African pastoralism is collapsing due to changing political and environmental factors. My dissertation aims to provide a case study adding to the general trends of African pastoralism, while emphasizing the topic of competition as not only physical, but as something that is ethnically negotiated through historical and collective memories. There are two main questions that have guided this project: 1) How is ethnic space defined by the Datoga and their neighbours across different historical times? And 2) what are the origins of the conflicts and violence and how have they been narrated by the state throughout history? Examining archival sources and oral interviews it is clear that the Datoga have struggled through a competitive history of claims on territory against other neighbouring communities. The competitive encounters began with the Maasai entering the Serengeti in the 19th century, and intensified with the introduction of colonialism in Mbulu and Singida in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fight for control of land and resources resulted in violent clashes with other groups. Often the Datoga were painted as murderers and impediments to development. Policies like the amalgamation measures of the British colonial administration in Mbulu or Ujamaa in post-colonial Tanzania aimed at confronting the “Datoga problem,” but were inadequate in neither addressing the Datoga issues of identity, nor providing a solution to their quest for land ownership and control.

Abstract

"In 2018, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was, by most measures, more powerful than at any other time in its history and had become one of the most powerful countries in the world. Its economy faced serious challenges, including from the ongoing ‘trade war’ with the US, but still ranked as the world’s second largest. Its Belt and Road Initiative, meanwhile, continued to carve paths of influence and economic integration across several continents. A deft combination of policy, investment, and entrepreneurship has also turned the PRC into a global ‘techno-power’. It aims, with a good chance of success, at becoming a global science and technology leader by 2049 – one hundred years from the founding of the PRC.In surveying the various ways in which the Party-state wields its hard, soft, and sharp power, the China Story Yearbook: Power offers readers a sense of the diversity of power at work both in China and abroad. Citizens of the PRC have long negotiated the state’s influence; increasingly, diaspora communities and other actors are now being subject to its might. As with previous editions in the series, we place important developments in historical context, and adopt a cross-disciplinary approach: it is our view that economy and politics cannot be divorced from culture, history, and society. The Yearbook provides accessible analysis of the main events and trends of the year and is an essential tool for understanding China’s growing power and influence around the world."

Abstract

It is increasingly recognised that EU development cooperation policy has failed to meet its stated aims. In this book Arts and Dickson ask the obvious and important question: if the policy doesn't work, why bother with it? The authors assess why EU development policy has become largely ineffective, citing among the external causal factors the liberalisation of trade, and the growing influence of US and international actors such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund upon EU policy. It also considers contributing factors within the EU such as the enlargement of its membership and the resulting shifts in priorities. It is this analysis of internal and external factors affecting the decline of EU development policy that makes this study both innovative and unique. It brings together an impressive range of contributors from different disciplines resulting in a thorough and intelligent assessment of the debate. This study will appeal to advanced level undergraduates and academics of European politics in general, EU integration, development studies, and International Relations.

Abstract

Abstract

The study of the quest for the good life and the morality and value it presupposes is not new. To the contrary, this is an ancient issue; its intellectual history can be traced back to Aristotle. In anthropology, the study of morality and value has always been a central concern, despite the claim of some scholars that the recent upsurge of interest in these issues is new. What is novel is how scholars in many disciplines are posing the value question in new ways. The global economic alignments of the present pose many political, moral and theoretical questions, but the central issue the essays in this collection address is: how do relatively poor people of the Australia–Pacific region survive in current precarious times? In looking to answer this question, contributors directly engage the values and concepts of their interlocutors. At a time when understanding local implications of global processes is taking on new urgency, these essays bring finely honed anthropological perspectives to matters of universal human concern—they offer radical empirical critique based on intensive fieldwork that will be of great interest to those seeking to comprehend the bigger picture.

Abstract

Latin American market-oriented reforms along the lines of the Washington Consensus need to be supplemented by a number of social policies to achieve a more equitable society. While there has been considerable progress in enhancing the efficiency, much less has been made with regard to improving the social situation. Germany has a long and successful tradition of a social market economy. However, developments in recent years have shown various pitfalls in the current economic and social security systems and the need for appropriate adjustments. Therefore, Germany as well as most Latin American countries have to look for new solutions to combine social justice with economic efficiency. This volume addresses some of the most pertinent problems in this respect.

Abstract

Peer-to-Peer Accommodation Networks: Pushing the boundaries is the first book to provide an in-depth analysis of the business model of Airbnb, to discuss factors facilitating the transition of peer-to-peer networks from niche market to mainstream accommodation providers, and to predict that the next step of development for peer-to-peer accommodation networks will be to become online one-stop travel shops. Many other hot topics around peer-to-peer accommodation are discussed.

La riforma della Politica Agricola Comunitaria e la filiera olivicolo-olearia italiana

Abstract

The book illustrates the results of a wide-ranging survey of the overall situation of the olive oil market and the Italian production chain for olives and olive oil. Based on the results of this investigation, two possible prospects for development have been identified. The first follows the guidelines that prevail at Community level, favouring a specialist olive cultivation. The second instead aims at a valorisation of agriculture where it features social aspects of particular significance. From this viewpoint the various olive farms in Italy ought not to be considered in a standardised manner, but individually valorised in relation to their different functions, which are not necessarily expressed in terms of yield.

Abstract

Like all the books in this series, this volume proposes wide-ranging reflections and cultural considerations pertinent to business management. Traditionally, realism is identified with a disenchanted approach to reality which is counterpoised to all forms of ideology or utopia. What is proposed here is a strategic realism which supports a humanist approach to enterprise, while steering clear of both cynicism and idealism. Seen from this angle, the crucial aspects of strategy are: the opportune selection of attainable advantages; interest as the spur to change; stratagem as a lever on the trend of events; the plan which traces the route of the opportunities called up, and the action that harvests the fruits.

Abstract

This book explains how the methodological approach of the Six Sigma can be used to provide an effective solution to one of the most widespread problems faced by Small and Medium Enterprises: the frequent undercapitalisation linked to short-term investments often funded by bank loans. The Six Sigma method enables the problem to be tackled by studying, in an analytical and statistical manner, both the payments that the enterprises are to receive and the possible conditions of the funding, proposing solutions to optimise these processes and improve the financial performance of the SMEs. Hence the book is offered as both a methodological analysis and as an operative tool for the sphere of enterprise.
