Abstract

Social scientists have only recently begun to explore the link between health and political engagement. Understanding this relationship is vitally important from both a scholarly and a policy-making perspective. This book is the first to offer a comprehensive account of health and political engagement. Using both individual-level and country-level data drawn from the European Social Survey, World Values Survey and new Finnish survey data, it provides an extensive analysis of how health and political engagement are connected. It measures the impact of various health factors on a wide range of forms of political engagement and attitudes and helps shed light on the mechanisms behind the interaction between health and political engagement. His text is of key interest scholars, students and policy-makers in health, politics, and democracy, and more broadly in the social and health and medical sciences.

Abstract

Teaching Health Care in Virtual Space is the first “how-to” manual for health educators on the instructional use of three-dimensional, computer-generated virtual environments, called “multi-user virtual learning environments” or MUVE. Dr. Estelle Codier has written a step-by-step handbook based on her experience supervising more than 400 learning activities in Second Life®. The book provides specific steps to assess instructional readiness and guidance for assessing student and class readiness. The text is accompanied by lively case studies of student learning illustrate the power of MUVE to transform health care education. The text includes an appendix of evaluation grids, grading matrices, syllabus descriptions, and detailed orientation materials for both faculty and students. While the sample learning activities were designed for nurses, instructors in other disciplines could easily adapt them for use in any MUVE setting.

Abstract

This edited volume explores how journalists and other media actors apply personalized frames and narratives, both visual and verbal, in representing and conveying health issues. Today's feature journalism in weekend editions of major newspapers frequently communicate very personal experiences, often visualized through a series of portrayed people's process of growing up, accompanied by images gathered from private photo albums. An expanding TV genre follows the journalist as a protagonist trying to come to terms with e.g. their own body, sexual orientation or experiences of suicide in close relations. In social media, journalists present their news even more subjectively and interpretatively compared to legacy media.Stories on lifestyle diseases, mental health or infectious diseases are unavoidably connected to broader practices of health policies, workplace strategies and legislation. Instead of either celebrating or deploring the tendency towards more personalized health journalism, the contributions to this volume explore how individuals and exemplars are represented in journalistic media, and what these representations imply about people's understanding of - and participation in - important health issues in society. The data gathered and examined in this volume are from the Nordic countries. The Nordic countries represent an interesting case study in media regulation globally, combining robust protections of press freedom with a significant level of regulation - reflecting the assumption that media are a social institution and not simply a private business. The Nordic countries are characterized by a high level of media distribution and consumption, both when it comes to legacy and social media. In this region, news media are also known to be innovative and resourceful, paving the way for new genres and formats. Another important factor is the high level of public health systems and social security legislation in the Nordic countries, which also makes the Nordic countries an interesting field of study.

Abstract

Psychiatric disorders in adolescents are an important social problem relevant to almost all healthcare professionals. The prevalence of mood, anxiety, substance use and other psychiatric disorders among adolescents is high. However, medical professionals are not sufficiently trained about adolescent psychiatric disorders. Primary care providers correctly identify less than a fourth of youth with a depressive or anxiety disorder and many clinicians underestimate the importance of the problem of adolescent psychiatric illnesses and suicidal behavior. Multiple clinical, neurobiological, cultural and legal aspects of psychiatric disorders in adolescents are discussed in this book.

Abstract

Whether increasing life expectancy leads to better health remains still controversial. Three topics are explored: (1) vanguard groups which inform about possible levels of health if the general social and environmental conditions were to approach those of the vanguard group; (2) the social and behavioral determinants of health differentiated into proximal and distal factors; (3) vulnerable groups such as migrants and the health differences between migrant groups. Newly available population-based data as well as new study designs and advanced statistical modelling form the basis for the empirical analyses.

Abstract

This book began life with the inaugural conference of the international research project ‘The healthy self as body capital: Individuals, market-based societies, body politics and visual media in the twentieth century Europe’, held in Strasbourg from 23 to 25 February 2017. The editors would like to thank all participants for their stimulating input during this outstanding event. The presentations and discussions influenced this book in many ways. The research project and the book are funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 694817) and receive significant support from the University of Strasbourg, the Research Unit SAGE (UMR 7363), and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development Berlin (Center for the History of Emotions). We owe gratitude to Tricia Close Koenig, Thérèse Vicente, Lionel Boutton, Fatima Gomis, and Assia Hammali for material support with our research and Elisabeth Fuchs for translation work and subtitling (all University of Strasbourg). We would also like to thank our editor at Amsterdam University Press, Maryse Elliott, for her support in the production of the book. Moreover, we thank our contributors for their inspiring ideas and indepth research. We would like to thank the artists VALIE EXPORT for her collaboration with one of the chapters and Sascha Kürschner for working with us on the book cover. We hope that his drawing ‘FEELING REAL’ from his series ‘PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS’ provides a fitting visual prelude to an interesting read.

Abstract

"This collaborative work provides a detailed snapshot of child oral health in Australia. In doing so, it describes the levels of dental caries and its components, dental fluorosis and other oral health conditions and how they vary by social characteristics. It also describes protective factors such as toothbrushing, the use of fluoridated toothpastes and making dental visits. The 2012–14 National Child Oral Health Survey (NCOHS) was a cross-sectional study of the child population aged 5 to 14 years in Australia. A total of 24,664 children from 841 participating schools completed the study. The study sample was selected in a complex multistage, stratified sampling design. Sophisticated weighting procedure was employed to adjust for variations in probabilities of selection and response rates. Therefore, this report presents estimates as representative of child oral health in Australia. Information was collected via a parental questionnaire and a detailed dental examination by trained dental professionals. Despite some improvement, child oral health has remained a significant population health issue in Australia in the 21st Century. The evidence described in this book has pointed to substantial social patterning of oral health status, dental service use and dental and general health behaviours among Australian children. The identification of the numerous factors and the relation between them at an individual child, family, school and community level poses both difficulties and opportunities for programs to make improvements to and reduce social inequalities in child oral health."
