Abstract

The Hmong are among Australia’s newest immigrant populations. They came as refugees from Laos after the communist revolution of 1975 ended their life there as highland shifting cultivators. The Hmong originate from southern China where many still remain, and others live in Vietnam, Thailand and Burma. Hmong refugees are now also settled in the USA, Canada, France, Germany and French Guyana. Already the beauty and richness of traditional Hmong culture, in particular their shamanism and embroidered costume, has attracted the attention of the Australian public, but little is known about these people, their background or the struggles they have faced to adjust to a new life in Australia. This interdisciplinary collection of articles deals with their music and textiles, gender and language, their social adaptation and their global diaspora. The book aims to bring knowledge of the Hmong to a wider public and contribute to the understanding of these people.

Abstract

Action Research in Norway. Theoretical and empirical diversity is an anthology consisting of twenty scientific articles from the fields of education, health, science centers, arts and working life. The anthology provides an insight into historical development, basic principles and theoretical and methodological discussions within the field of action research. The book addresses questions about participation, experience and dialogue as a basis for knowledge development. It includes topics such as professional development, development of school subjects, practice development, and organizational development. The empirical articles emphasizes on bridging the gap between theory and practice to understand, change and develop practices. Questions about the researcher´s role in action research are brought to attention, by highlighting issues such as the researcher's responsibility to contribute to reflection and clarification, and to raise critical questions, as well as to ensure that all voices are being heard. Furthermore, the anthology shows how exploratory methods, self-study and research in one’s own organization can contribute to learning and knowledge creation. The anthology underscores the importance of developing good education in action research at Master and Ph.D. level and argues for the importance of strengthening the research teaching in this field. Overall, the anthology shows how action research as a research tradition contributes to clarify and develop its epistemological and methodological foundation, to provide valid research results and to convey relevant and credible new knowledge. Such knowledge has an impact on how we practice, communicate and understand research in a variety of contexts.

Abstract

This book seeks to bridge the gap between leading edge scholarship about the nature of the physical, tangible Universe and the nature of the life process on Earth on the one hand, and on the other hand challenges facing human society as to the current revolution in energy sources, national and international levels of political and economic organization, and humanity`s impacts upon the global ecosystem which have given rise to the depiction of a new era in earthlife termed the anthropocene. The author`s public career included responsibilities for economic policy formulation and implementation at the United States Department of Justice, the United States Agency for International Development, and a White House Office of Consumer Affairs. This provided an elevated overview of many current economic and political issues. These responsibilities stimulated a multi-decade exploration of leading academics` insights into the relational structuring of the Universe, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, complexity in the universe, and the structure of the life process. This book applies such fundamental insights to the question whether humanity will succeed or fail in its ambitious but uncertain quest.

Abstract

This book is organized into two parts, the first one focused specifically on the Plutarchian Corpus as a source for the study of art and iconography (sculpture, painting, and numismatics), the second one on the Life of Alexanderand its reception in Western art (painting, tapestry and cinema). It brings together seven studies by Spanish and Portuguese researchers, along with an introductory text. Based on different perspectives of analysis and up-to-date bibliography, though focused in the work of Plutarch, this volume is also a contribution to research in the field of Classical Art and Reception Studies.

Abstract

Domestic Devotions in Early Modern Italy illuminates the vibrancy of spiritual beliefs and practices which profoundly shaped family life in this era. Scholarship on Catholicism has tended to focus on institutions, but the home was the site of religious instruction and reading, prayer and meditation, communal worship, multi-sensory devotions, contemplation of religious images and the performance of rituals, as well as extraordinary events such as miracles. Drawing on a wide range of sources, this volume affirms the central place of the household to spiritual life and reveals the myriad ways in which devotion met domestic needs. The seventeen essays encompass religious history, the histories of art and architecture, material culture, musicology, literary history, and social and cultural history.

Abstract

The Apartment of Tragic Appliances, named as a finalist for a 2013 Lambda Literary Award, is a literal place in which a hapless, portable dishwasher “heats residue only to reimagine cleanliness as an art project,” a recalcitrant microwave neglects to heat, and a refrigerator dies an inconvenient, bulky death. It is also that psychic space in which we consider our loneliness, our wandering hearts, our unpacked boxes, our vulgar desires. In Queer Optimism: Lyric Personhood and Other Felicitous Persuasions (Minnesota, 2007), Michael Snediker worked “in the interests of felicity” to undermine the ways in which queer theory customarily privileges shame and melancholy. Here, in his first full-length collection of poetry, he undertakes a similar upending of expectation, acknowledging “gay sadness” but refusing to fall fully under its sway. The demi-tragedies of daily life are recounted by a voice that is variously wistful, giddy, bawdy, silly, and tart. Along the way, Michael Snediker sets off an impressive pyrotechnic display of literary allusion, drawing on the superstars of the Western canon (think: Virgil, Racine, Proust, James, Wharton, Tennessee Williams) and of popular culture (Lucille Ball, John Travolta, Alex Trebek). Buyer beware: In these pages you will not find advice on how to feng shui your duplex or tame a Cuisinart run amok. Instead, you will find something far rarer: a book of poetic sustenance. As Daniel Tiffany observes, “We have been missing poems like these for a long time.”

Abstract

Abstract

The EQ-5D instrument, as a standardized, cross-culturally validated measure of self-assessed health has a hugely important role in understanding population health within and across countries. Over the past two decades a wealth of international population health survey data have been accumulated by the EuroQol Group from research conducted in many countries across four continents. One of the success factors of the EQ-5D instruments has been the easy availability of national or international sets of EQ-5D data, as well as clear explanations and guidance for users. There is an unmet need to produce a comprehensive book that captures up-to-date and expanded information of EQ-5D self-reported health and index values. EQ-5D population norms and cross-country analyses are provided from representative national surveys of 20 countries and additional regional surveys. This book will be a must for those who believe that how people report and value health is very important.
