Abstract

This book presents a variety of different themes related to risks and risk management. The book consists of research papers aimed at supplementing and updating the topics discussed previously in risk management literature. The articles cover the key concepts and essence of risk and risk management, basic issues of security construction, risk awareness in corporate decision-making, reputation risk and its impact on business operations, social risks, their significance and the dimensions of social risk management. The last article presents the freely available RiskDemo software, which allows the reader to test and illustrate a wide range of risk features. The book aims to respond to the recent changes in the risk management environment as well as to stimulate academic debate on the subject.

Abstract

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance have most commonly been viewed in the context of human use and effects. However, both have co-existed in nature for millennia. Recently the roles of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes have started to be discussed in terms of functions other than bacterial inhibition and protection. This special topic will focus on both the traditional role of antibiotics as warfare mechanisms and their alternative roles and uses within nature such as antibiotics as signals or communication mechanisms, antibiotic selection at low concentrations, the non-specific role of resistance mechanisms in nature: e.g. efflux pumps, evolution of antibiotic resistance and the role of persisters in natural antibiotic resistance.

Abstract

Today's globalised society highly depends on reliable infrastructure systems like transportation and telecommunication. This doctoral dissertation presents a methodology to identify critical road infrastructures. Critical road sections are those whose failure would entail large costs to society. The dissertation also accounts for aspects like multiple road disruptions and probabilities of failure. Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany serves as a case study area.

Abstract

This open access book showcases the burgeoning area of applied research at the intersection between weather and climate science and the energy industry. It illustrates how better communication between science and industry can help both sides. By opening a dialogue, scientists can understand the broader context for their work and the energy industry is able to keep track of and implement the latest scientific advances for more efficient and sustainable energy systems.Weather & Climate Services for the Energy Industry considers the lessons learned in establishing an ongoing discussion between the energy industry and the meteorological community and how its principles and practises can be applied elsewhere. This book will be a useful guiding resource for research and early career practitioners concerned with the energy industry and the new field of research known as energy meteorology.

Abstract

This book sheds light on the influence of the environment on people’s mental health. To what extent are exposures to green space, air pollution, natural disasters, etc. related to depression or suicide? Such questions are relevant for both scientists and policy-makers. A rich collection of chapters subsumes current research frontiers originating from disciplines such as geography, public health, epidemiology, environmental science, etc. The topics covered in the book are of interest to researchers, practitioners, and professionals. The editor hopes that the scientific outcome of this book will stimulate debate about how the environment affects mental health outcomes.

Abstract

"The frame of this chapter is how clinicians and leaders employed in psychiatricdepartments in hospitals experience and cope with patients who commitsuicide while undergoing treatment. The major focus is the phenomenon which inthe Bow-tie model is called “stabilization”. To explore this phenomenon in an empiricalanalysis, two concepts of samhandling are introduced, these being coordinationand cooperation. These two concepts are used in an interpretation of what eightleaders and clinicians report on how they handle working together after a patientduring treatment in a psychiatric hospital has unexpectedly committed suicide. The findings are that leaders and clinicians have different views on what stabilizationis. Stabilization to the leaders seems to be something they can handle by usingmandatory organizational procedures of coordination. To the clinicians (psychologistsand psychiatrists) however, stabilization is less straightforward. Professionalstabilization is, to them, more important than organizational stabilization, and itrequires another form of interaction – namely, cooperation. Cooperation is, in itssimplest and purest form, a symmetrical way of working together, based on equalityin competence and an unforced relation between the parties. For the purpose ofprofessional stabilization, this is the form of interaction preferred by the clinicians. However, these findings are tentative and more research is needed to elaborate whyleaders and clinicians respond as they do after a patient suicide."

Abstract

"This study shows some generic characteristics from sports that are of relevance tosamhandling structures under risk. The findings are based on a case study of theconcept of “Total Football” and the Rosenborg Football Club (RBK) in Norway.Football is a dynamic sport with several factors that come into play and whereflexible solutions are demanded. The case is also of relevance for organizations inhandling risk. RBK’s samhandling is based on “Total Football” and flow theory. Inanalyzing RBK, we also apply theories of improvisation. RBK created a platformthat gave both direction to choices and a clear playing pattern. This platform furtherensured that tasks could be executed at high speed and high intensity, described as“flow”. Flow contributed to both speed and precision in the playing pattern. It isconcluded that the following is relevant for other organizations: 1) Forming a deeperunderstanding of samhandling and ensuring top management commitment; 2)Creating, establishing and maintaining samhandling in a manner that suits the organization;and 3) Minimal structures can be of great importance for organizationsin unforeseen and risky situations."

Abstract

"The chapter presents a case from a government agency in Norway, wheretwo assistant directors share a leadership position and must interact extensively. Themain purpose is to highlight some benefits and challenges related to shared leadershipwhen it comes to risk prevention and handling unforeseen events. The analysisis based on a relational perspective that emphasizes that successful interaction betweenpeople requires complementary skills, conceptualized as relational skills. Thechapter concludes that the patterns of interaction and relational skills that developduring shared leadership can help prevent undesirable events. This is partly becauseshared leadership can provide increased capacity in identifying risks. Commonexperiences in handling risks and unforeseen events may contribute to learningthat in turn provides the potential for further development of the interactional andrelational skills in shared leadership. At the same time, shared leadership entailssome risks that may impact on the prevention and handling of such events. Forinstance, interactional challenges that may arise in a shared leadership may preventleaders from discovering potential hazards."

Abstract

"An unforeseen event may be defined as something that happens suddenlyand unexpectedly. Such events are seldom the result of an organisation’s operationalplanning, but they can be side-effects of such planning. An unforeseen event mayhave either positive or negative consequences. This chapter aims to discuss if it ispossibleto prevent unforeseen events. The major focus is on analysis and preventionof unforeseen events with negative consequences, such as accidents, catastrophesand acts of terror. Such events often take place in complex systems, and failures ofappropriate organisational interaction and communication among participantswith complementary competence in such systems may contribute to unforeseenevents. Risk-analysis methods and tools based on energy-barrier models, causal sequenceand process models, as well as information-processing models are presentedand their applicability to the prevention of unforeseen events is discussed. This alsoincludes the Bow-tie approach, as well as other approaches which take into considerationorganisational factors and social interaction (samhandling). The conclusionis that unforeseen events can be prevented. However, in the aftermath of the implementationof safety and security measures, it is not possible to know which eventsthey prevented, or to obtain knowledge about their efficiency. An additional strategyfor prevention of unforeseen events with negative consequences is proposed."
