Abstract

The uses and practices of sign languages are strongly related to scientific research on sign languages and vice versa. Conversely, sign linguistics cannot be separated from Deaf community practices, including practices in education and interpretation. Therefore, the current volume brings together work on sign language interpreting, the use of spoken and sign language with deaf children with cochlear implants and early language development in children exposed to both a spoken and sign language, and reports on recent research on aspects of sign language structure. It also includes papers addressing methodological issues in sign language research. The book presents papers by more seasoned researchers and new kids on the block, as well as papers in which the two collaborate. The contributions will be of interest to all those interested in linguistics, sociolinguistics, cultural studies, interpreting and education. It will have particular relevance to those interested in sign linguistics, sociolinguistics of deaf communities, Deaf studies, Deaf culture, sign language interpretation, sign language teaching, and (spoken/signed) bilingualism. Given the scarcity of literature on Deaf studies, the book will also appeal widely beyond the traditional academic milieu. As a result, it has relevance for those teaching and learning sign languages, for professional and student interpreters and for teachers of the deaf.

Abstract

This monograph analyzes an innovative approach to teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in tertiary education. This "constructivist blended learning approach" is based on students "constructing" for themselves their own knowledge and professional communication skills in English by making extensive use of Internet sites in English, combining traditional in-class learning with in- and out-of-class learning through the Internet (blended learning). Dr. Tarnopolsky offers a thorough analysis of the principal forms of learning activities in English for this approach and suggests five principles underlying its practical implementation.

Abstract

The book is concerned with the linguistic worldview broadly understood, but it focuses on one particular variant of the idea, its sources, extensions, its critical assessment, and inspirations for related research. This approach is the ethnolinguistic linguistic worldview (LWV) program pursued in Lublin, Poland, and initiated and headed by Jerzy Bartmiński. In its basic design, the volume emerged from the theme of the conference held in Lublin in October 2011: “The linguistic worldview or linguistic views of worlds?” If the latter is the case, then what worlds? Is it a case of one language/one worldview? Are there literary or poetic worldviews? Are there auctorial worldviews? Many of the chapters are based on presentations from that conference, and others have been written especially for the volume. Generally, there are four kinds of contributions: (i) a presentation and exemplification of the “Lublin style” LWV approach; (ii) studies inspired by this approach but not following it in detail; (iii) independent but related and compatible research; and (iv) a critical reappraisal of some specific ideas proposed by Jerzy Bartmiński and his collaborators.

Abstract

Current grammatical knowledge about sign languages is fragmentary and of varying reliability and is scattered in scientific publications where the description is often intertwined with the analysis. Comprehensive grammars are rare. This work is an innovative tool for the grammar writer: a full-fledged guide to describing all components of the grammars of sign languages in a thorough and systematic way and with the highest scientific standards.

Abstract

Medical reports were a major element of medical communication as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. What characterizes such texts? Using a broad-based analytic model from the field of text linguistics, the author investigates specific classes of texts – consultations, court reports, and autopsy reports – in terms of their cultural and scientific history while also identifying their particular linguistic hallmarks.

Abstract

Molière, often considered the ‘godfather of Arab theatre’, was first introduced to the Arab world in 1847 by Marun Naqqaš and his adaptation of The Miser. Since then, Molière has never ceased to influence Arab dramaturgy. Discussing a series of plays by authors from Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco, this study aims at defining Molière’s role in the development of a national Arab theatre.

The last part of the book focuses on language teaching and learning and addresses the changes, challenges and perspectives of didactics in the age of technology. Each contribution is divided into several sections that present the state of the art and the methodology used, and discuss the results and perspectives of the authors. The book is recommended to scholars, professionals, students and anyone interested in the changes within the humanities in conjunction with technological innovation or in the ways language is adapting to the challenges of today’s digitized world.
