Abstract

For the first time, this comprehensive study deals with the entire reception of Schiller's works in all relevant Slavic literatures up to 1900. She concentrates on the translations of his poetry into the corresponding languages as well as the respective reactions to his work in scientific circles as well as in the wider literary public. Not least of all, it is taken into account to what extent the respective nationalistic journalistic statements on Schiller reflect an independent Slavic opinion formation or, in their dependence on foreign sources, possibly far more particularly reflect German or French judgments on his work. The presentation complements a detailed, more than 1,600 titles comprehensive bibliography of the transmissions of works Schiller in all Slavic languages until 1900.

Abstract

The study provides an overview of one of the most intensive phases of German-Polish literature exchange before the reciprocal contacts promoted by Poland until the mid-19th century, not least due to political reasons. The German-Polish literature relations have enjoyed quite a lot of interest in the last decades. However, the previous research concentrates on the one hand cultural-historical, the narrower literary area often far-reaching aspects, such as studies on the echo of the Polish uprisings in Germany, on the other hand on the reception of the work of individual personalities. The present work seeks to close some of the previous gaps by presenting the Polish-German literary relations of that time in their entirety in a condensed overview, focused on the respective literature reception in the form of translations and journalistic reactions under the broadest possible evaluation of German and Polish periodicals.

Abstract

In the story of the three baseball umpires, two novice umpires compete in boasting how they respect «truth» and the way things «really» are. One says, «I call them the way I see them»; the other, trying to trump this remark, responds, «I call them the way they are». Then enters the third, most seasoned umpire, saying, «They aren’t, until I call them».
This book deals with two widely argued issues in literature criticism today, performativity and subjectivity. How do people become who they are? What scripts do they follow when they «do» gender, race, and sexuality? Tying into speech act theories and subjectivity theories, as well as gender, race, and sexuality studies, the author explores – through the close reading of several American texts – the many ways words make «things» in literature.

Abstract

This work originated from a (seemingly) simple question, but at the same time it tries to discuss a general problem. The question is: where does the plot of the "Wilhelm Meister apprenticeship" actually take place? Is it a "real" world, a world that we "know otherwise" or, given the time gap that separates us from this world, we also use other, non-literary, and in any case, non-work, means (for example, with the help of historical research) can open up to us? Can we even speak of a "reality in itself"? Or has she become questionable to us? Or do we only see a - concept in it? The latter is the case for this work.

Abstract

After 1989, the interest of Czech readers in unconventional, "other" literature, underground and dissidentism, as well as authors of literary modernism and the avant-garde, who did not belong to the official literary canon during socialism, grew. Ladislav Klima, Jakub Demi and also Richard Weiner get into focus. In addition to a series of individual publications since 1996, the long-planned work edition of Weiner is published. Richard Weiner experiences a veritable renaissance. Weiner's multi-layered prose tries to do justice to this work by means of different interpretations: living in a foreign state versus affinity with the homeland, homoerotic inclination versus the claim of a heterosexually normalized society, search for meaning and salvation versus guilt feeling.

Abstract

Written between 1855 and 1862, the four novels "Rudin", "A Nest o f the Gentry", "On the Eve" and "Fathers and Sons" are generally recognised as Turgenev's most notable contribution to Russian and world literature. Are they primarily social chronicles, as Turgenev suggested, or are they rather to be seen as celebrations of life, of the beauty of love and youthful idealism? Are they paens to the nobility of the human spirit or ironic comments on human folly? The same questions are addressed in the present study, but the question with which it is principally concerned is that of the novels' essential character.
