The experiments cover a wide range of different topics such as sensor fusion, vibration analysis, acoustics and image processing. The presented techniques aim at making the reader familiar with the practical application of modern methods of signal processing. Abstract

Underwater images are most often degraded by color shifts, blurring and brightening effects. The presented approach is based on a problem-specific physical model of under water image formation. Thereon, methods of image restoration and image data retrieval are presented, which invert image degradation processes. Hence, it is possible to enhance image quality with model knowledge under different image acquisition conditions.

Abstract

In the proposed system the environment of an industrial robot is captured through algorithms of machine learning. Thus, objects and human actions are determined. Based on semantic analysis situational knowledge is inferred and dynamic risk assessment as well as robotic behaviour are concluded. Consequently, this provides the foundation for a reactive robot system for achieving efficient and safe human-robot-cooperation.

Abstract

The aim of this work was the development of new image processing methods for the analysis and optimization of rotary kiln processes. It is shown how the newly developed methods can be employed to analyze certain areas and effects of rotary kiln processes. Thereby gained new process information can be used in the process control to optimize rotary kiln processes in terms of economic and environmental objectives.

Abstract

This work presents two image-based inspection approaches for the quality evaluation of cylinder bore surfaces. In the first algorithm, metal folds on plateau-honed surfaces are inspected with scanning electron microscopy. An edge-aware structure tensor is proposed for feature extraction and localization of surface defects. The second algorithm uses a morphgraphical method for detecting graphite grains in optical micrographs. Based on the inspection results, quality parameters are proposed.

It decouples the application domain from the text analyses: NLCI is an extensible architecture and its components are reusable. NLCI is evaluated with two case studies in two radically different domains: translating commands for a home automation system (openHAB) and generating 3D animations from English scripts with Alice.

Abstract

A software-defined optical Tx is designed and demonstrated generating signals with various formats and pulse-shapes in real-time. Special pulse-shapes such as OFDM or Nyquist signaling were utilized resulting in a highly efficient usage of the available fiber channel bandwidth. This was achieved by parallel data processing with high-end FPGAs. Furthermore, highly efficient Rx algorithms for carrier and timing recovery as well as for polarization demultiplexing were developed and investigated.

Abstract

How can people with different knowledge and experience use process models in the digital communication and at the same time how can they receive system support through the described processes? This question is solved by a mutual transformation based on natural language which is illustrated with practical examples. Thus, more widespread workflows can be implemented by incorporating system boundaries that were previously hard to overcome.

Abstract

Mobile robotic systems need to perceive their surroundings in order to act independently. In this work a perception framework is developed which interprets the data of a binocular camera in order to transform it into a compact, expressive model of the environment. This model enables a mobile system to move in a targeted way and interact with its surroundings. It is shown how the developed methods also provide a solid basis for technical assistive aids for visually impaired people.

Abstract

While the spectral information contained in hyperspectral images is rich, the spatial resolution of such images is in many cases very low. Many pixel spectra are mixtures of pure materials’ spectra and therefore need to be decomposed into their constituents. This work investigates new decomposition methods taking into account spectral, spatial and global 3D adjacency information. This allows for faster and more accurate decomposition results.
