Abstract

There is as yet no collection that examines the longer histories of global humanitarianism and media culture, which would enable readers to consider the various continuities, as well as the differences, characterising the mass media’s relationship with international humanitarian crisis and relief. This collection examines this relationship from the 1950s to the present, from Marshall Plan documentaries and the promotion of the Peace Corps in the decades following the Second World War to the role of Facebook in the work of NGOS and the media’s response to the current refugee crisis. The majority of the contributors to the proposed volume are specialists in the fields of media, film and cultural studies and approach the question of humanitarianism-media culture relations from a variety of critical and theoretical perspectives, and draw on other disciplines such as sociology, journalism, politics and anthropology.

Abstract

This work describes the influence of catalytic converter heating strategies on the emissions during heating operation, as well as during the subsequent load demand at different engine start temperatures. A novel strategy is presented, that provides heating of the combustion chamber, without decreasing the catalyst converter heating significantly. The studies were carried out on a gasoline engine. Emissions were examined in detail. In addition, the flame propagation is evaluated experimentally.

Abstract

The local dimension of development, even in a framework of global relationships and interconnections, appears as a topic of great interest for the territorial planning disciplines, opening new spaces above all in the reflection on the effectiveness of large area and supra-municipal level planning. The Val d’Agri Inter-communal Structural Plan was conceived as an experimental model of inter-municipal plan, as per DGR n. 1495 of 21/09/2010 of the Basilicata Region, for the development of which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the administrations of 23 municipalities.Reference for the entire activity of technical and scientific support to the Staff of the Basilicata Region were three academic institutions: the School of Engineering (SI) of the University of Basilicata, the Department of European and Mediterranean Cultures (DiCEM) of the University of Basilicata, the Urban and Spatial Planning Laboratory "Raffaele D'Ambrosio" (LUPT) of the Federico II University of NaplesAfter a first phase of the research work, concluded in 2014 and whose results are summarized in this volume, in 2018 the technical-scientific support activities have been resumed to allow the Region to define the eventual final products of the Inter-municipal Structural Plan of Val d'Agri.

Abstract

Urbanization in Northern Corridor Economic Region in Malaysia presents five chapters: Introduction, Paradigm of Urbanization, The Rise of Urbanization, Urbanization in Northern Corridor Economic Region, and Strategy on Urbanization. The book provides an insight into scientific literature on the topic of urbanization, encompassing a variety of publications such as books, magazines, journals, and other formats. The notion of urbanization, related to the urban model and theory, is becoming recognized in academic spheres. Urban theory, within the urban context, aims to define objectives and distinct approaches for the common realization of city living. Urban transition consists of a variety of elements that transform the urban region. The data presented in the book examines the link between various perspectives on urbanization and their outcomes. The strategies on urbanization must involve many domains, because an estimated 1.6 billion citizens currently reside in urban regions.

Abstract

Abstract

Stroke, a progressively non-communicable disease, is the second leading cause of death after coronary heart disease in developed countries. The present treatment options for stroke are adapting lifestyle practices, diabetes treatment, drugs, and the management of other factors, but no cure is yet available, despite new insights into molecular and therapeutic targets. Discoveries related to explicating the molecular pharmacology in cerebrovascular function and thrombosis have led to significant advancements in the current treatment paradigm for patients with stroke. Hence, this Special Issue invited scientific papers and reviews from researchers to provide solid evidence from a molecular point of view to scrutinize the molecular pharmacology and pathology of strokes. Platelet activation plays a major role in cardio and cerebrovascular diseases. Platelets also play a key role in the hemostatic process and are associated with various pathological events, such as arterial thrombosis and atherosclerosis. While the currently used anti-platelet drugs such as aspirin and clopidogrel demonstrate efficacy in many patients, they exert undesirable side effects. Therefore, the development of effective therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of thrombotic diseases is a significant priority. Recently, precious metal drugs have conquered the subject of metal-based drugs, and several investigators have moved their attention to the synthesis of various ruthenium (Ru) and iridium (Ir) complexes due to their prospective therapeutic values. We have published this e-book about the “Molecular Pharmacology and Pathology of Strokes” and anticipate that readers will find this book useful regarding the significant challenges and current advances that are presently being made in stroke research, with the possibility of inspiring the application of novel drug development to enrich the devotion and treatment of patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract

The alpine cryosphere including snow, glaciers and permafrost are critical to water management in the Aral Sea Basin (ASB) and larger Central Asia (CA) under changing climate: as they store large amounts of water in its solid forms. Most cryospheric components in the Aral Sea Basin are close to melting point, and hence very vulnerable to a slight increase in air temperature with significant consequences to long-term water availability and to water resources variability and extremes. Current knowledge about different components of cryosphere and their connection to climate in the Basin and in the entire Central Asia, varies. While it is advanced in the topics of snow and glaciers, knowledge on permafrost it rather limited. Observed trends in runoff point in the direction of increasing water availability in July and August at least until mid-century and increasing possibility for water storage in reservoirs and aquifers. However, eventually this will change as glaciers waste away. Future runoff may change considerably after mid-century and start to decline if not compensated by increasing precipitation. Cryosphere monitoring systems are the basis for sound estimates of water availability and water-related hazards associated with snow, glaciers and permafrost. They require a well-distributed observational network for all cryospheric variables. Such systems need to be re-established in the Basin after the breakup of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. This process is slowly emerging in the region. Collaboration between local operational hydro-meteorological services and academic sector, and with international research networks may improving the observing capabilities in high mountain regions of CA Asia in general and the ASB specifically.

Abstract

"The development and spread of self-help groups in Norway has been unlike that in other western countries. Public authorities, in collaboration with private sector volunteer resources, have created a national hybrid organization, Self-Help Norway (Selvhjelp Norge), to promote ‘self-help’ options. The introduction of combined groups, in which participants come together with a range of different problems or diagnoses, is also unusual. This book takes a closer look at the phenomenon of self-help in light of theories relating to group therapy, social movements, organizational sociology and welfare-state development. The individual chapters are based on the authors’ own research on self-help groups and the way they are organized in Norway. Our underlying point of departure is that self-help is in fact something quite different from the common public perception of a self-absorbed and ‘narcissistic’ activity that occurs at the expense of the community.Self-help groups have, rightly so, a focus on individual change and have recently gained a stronger psychological orientation. There is however a need for describing and analyzing the self-help group’s collective dimension, the reciprocal form of self-help that takes place in the context of the group. We analyze as well the growth of what we have called ‘the new self-help movement’ in the border zone between public and private sector and show how self-help has been established in various local societies as a form of social entrepreneurship. The movement’s breakthrough with the public sector is internationally unique, but it can also have come at a cost in the form of less legitimacy and relevance for the other self-help organizations. We pose questions about where these developments will lead."

Abstract

The standard approach to cognitive development most frequently consists of cross-sectional studies comparing different ages and groups while restricted to a single task. The necessity to focus on the individual in an idiographic perspective, rather than on the task or the variable, has been repeatedly emphasized, most recently in several very important papers by Nesselroade and Molenaar. Variability has also emerged as a crucial characteristic. Moreover, understanding the developmental construction of a given cognitive achievement is imperative to understanding cognitive functioning in adulthood. The general objective of this book is to focus on the individual by studying intraindividual and interindividual variability in various cognitive tasks, that is, intraindividual variability across items of a given task (inconsistency), across various cognitive tasks (dispersion), and/or across years (intraindividual change), and of course, on interindividual differences in intraindividual variability. This book presents empirical studies that have been conducted by research groups in Europe and in North America, prominent in the field of variability and development or methodology. The 26 authors/co-authors include senior authors such as Lautrey, Schmiedek, Dauvier, van der Maas, Ghisletta, Stawski, MacDonald, and de Ribaupierre.
