Abstract

Dual-phase steels exhibit good mechanical properties due to a microstructure of strong martensitic inclusions embedded in a ductile ferritic matrix. This work presents a two-scale model for the underlying work-hardening effects; such as the distinctly different hardening rates observed for high-strength dual-phase steels. The model is based on geometrically necessary dislocations and comprises the average microstructural morphology as well as a direct interaction between the constituents.

Abstract

This work studies the interaction of natural aerosol with clouds for two different weather regimes in Central Europe. One model study highlights the impact of sea salt aerosol on postfrontal, convective cumulus clouds. The other study examines the influence of mineral dust aerosol on the formation of cirrus clouds during a mineral dust outbreak on 3 April 2014.

Abstract

Doppler radars provide unique 3D information about precipitating clouds in high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, the observed quantities (reflectivity, Doppler velocity and polarization properties) are not directly comparable to the variables of numerical prediction models. In order to enable radar data assimilation, a comprehensive modular radar forward operator has been developed.

Abstract

The demand for smart grid and smart home applications has raised the recent interest in power line communication (PLC) technologies, and has driven a broad set of deep surveys in low-voltage (LV) power line channels. This book proposes a set of novel approaches, to characterize and to emulate LV power line channels in the frequency range from0.15to 10 MHz, which closes gaps between the traditional narrowband (up to 500 kHz) and broadband (above1.8 MHz) ranges.

Abstract

In this work, the fracture toughness is predicted by means of a method based on tests using sub-size specimens. For this purpose, the fracture process including crack growth is described using FEM and cohesive zone model. The tests on sub-size specimens are used for parameter identification. With this set of parameters a standard-size specimen can be simulated. The predicted fracture toughness based on this standard-size specimen meets the size-requirements of the applicable standard.

Sandstone is the most common kind of natural stone used for historic buildings in Central Europe. During the past century a dramatic increase in different types of damage to historic buildings, monuments and sculptures made from natural stone has been observed. The present work deals with theoretical aspects of strength loss, fracture processes and degradation during the decay processes.

Abstract

The consideration of discrete motor primitives in models of human motor control is essential for the realistic prediction of voluntary movements. In this book a formal movement model is derived from neurobiological findings as well as new identification and learning methods are presented for the secured determination of the model parameters. Both the model and the identification methods are demonstrated using the example of predicting human driver steering movements.

This question is solved by a mutual transformation based on natural language which is illustrated with practical examples. Thus, more widespread workflows can be implemented by incorporating system boundaries that were previously hard to overcome.

Collision avoidance systems like emergency braking assist systems have demonstrated their effectiveness in increasing the safety of vehicle passengers in various studies. To further increase the effectiveness of collision avoidance systems, the exploitation of the lateral free space by evasive maneuvers is being investigated in this book. This work focuses on methods for integrated trajectory planning and vehicle dynamics control in collision avoidance scenarios by combined evasion and braking.

Abstract

This work presents an efficient solution procedure for the elastohydrodynamic (EHD) contact problem considering structural dynamics. The contact bodies are modeled using reduced finite element models. Singly diagonal implicit Runge-Kutta (SDIRK) methods are used for adaptive time integration. The structural model is coupled with the nonlinear Reynolds Equation using a monolithic coupling approach. Finally, a reduced order model of the complete nonlinear coupled problem is constructed.
