Abstract

The examination of literary and cultural transfer processes in the colonial Caribbean allows completely new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation. Racist discourses, established models of white abolitionists, politics of remembrance and the hitherto neglected role of the Haitian Revolution combine to an amalgam that questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity.

Abstract

The debate surrounding world literature has been brought into renewed focus in light of questions pertaining to global networks in a polycentric world. Beyond theoretical debates, however, there has been a marked lack of materialistic approaches that seek to shed light on processes underlying the formation of world literature. Using Latin American literature as an example, this volume shows how the global circulation of literature takes place.

Abstract

In view of the current crisis of globalization, this book aims to interrogate one of its key concepts in the past decades: World Literature. In a historical moment where the established focus on transnational identities, linguistic intersections, and other cosmopolitan cultural configurations is being challenged, the contributions of this volume explore possible adjustments, critiques, reconceptualizations, or refutations of World Literature.

Abstract

This book aims to modify the focus of common center-periphery dynamics of research on World Literature: Using the example of Latin American literatures, this study provides innovative insights into the literary modeling of shared historical experiences, epistemological crosscurrents, and book market processes within the Global South which thus far have received scant attention.

Abstract

The concept at issue in this book is Weltliteratur, or World Literature. Theoretical frameworks usually view the now-famous epistolary exchange between Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the young Johann Peter Eckermann as the true foundation of the concept, (though earlier promoters of similar ideas, such as August Wilhelm Schlegel can be cited)1. Goethe wrote this to Eckermann in a well-known letter in 1827: “National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of World Literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach”2. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels as well as Richard Moulton and Erich Auerbach, among many others, also all contributed to the category from their respective historical moments and theoretical perspectives. Marx and Engels, of course, took a materialist point of view that emphasized the expansion of the capitalist economic project and its progressive conquest of the world as a market. Richard Moulton and Erich Auerbach, on the other hand, came from a humanistic philological perspective that, as Jérôme David has put it in his reflections on the different genealogies of World Literature, “derived from the anxious preoccupation with what the literary works mean” (2013: 14) and focused very early on the problems of translation and canonization that would become crucial for the conceptual debates of our time

Abstract

From the perspective of Latin American Studies, this volume offers a critical contribution to the current debate on world literature. It is structured around three conceptual blocks: gatekeepers, as the dispositives and actors mediating the international circulation of literature translation, as an unavoidable but always problematic mechanism and local literatures, as modes of writing that remain intrinsically tied to their contexts.

Abstract

Parallel to the abolition of Atlantic slavery, new forms of indentured labour stilled global capitalisms need for cheap, disposable labour. The famous coolie trade – mainly Asian labourers transferred to French and British islands in the Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, as well as to Portuguese colonies in Africa – was one of the largest migration movements in global history. Indentured contract workers are perhaps the most revealing example of bonded labour in the grey area between the poles of chattel slavery and free wage labour. This interdisciplinary volume addresses historically and regionally specific cases of bonded labour relations from the 18th century to sponsorship systems in the Arab Gulf States today.
