Abstract

Abstract

The creative industries, and particularly our UK Music industry, are perceivedas healthy, resilient and strong. However, with the ongoing policychanges in secondary and higher education, as well as the continued cutsto council budgets and the ongoing lack of commitment to wealth distributionand even investment in the whole nation, this golden era of the creativeindustries in the UK may not last. In my latest articles, I explore criticalthemes relevant for the UK Music industry and the UK creative sector asa whole. Current national policy expressions often omit to address thesethemes, which are necessary to safeguard our future creative resilience. Inwriting this article, much relevance will be drawn from making connectionsto recent public debates on what universities are for and what theirrole is within the creative economy. Attention is given to considering currentgovernmental industry strategies critically and their relevance for themusic industry, together with their sector responses.

Abstract

The abbreviation “APCOM” stands for “Applications for Computers and Operations Researchin the Minerals Industry”. When the conference started in 1964, it was an informal meetingof scientists from different universities in the USA together with the “Society of MiningEngineers” (SME) of the United States. During the years the APCOM conference wasperformed in a mostly bi-annual rhythm. Up to today APCOM maintained its original logoformed around a punch card clearly remembering the historic origin of the conference fromthe times prior to the revolution caused by the era of semiconductors. In the beginning, APCOM focused on the optimization of geostatistics and resourceestimation and a number of methods used in these fields were initially presented and discussedon APCOM conferences. This field still today is an important part of any APCOM.During the years, information technology has dramatically developed, new algorithmicmethods evolved and the entire fields of electronic communication, machine automation, autonomous machines and process optimization developed. Consequently, today, APCOMis much more than a meeting of specialists in geostatistics and resource estimation: TheAPCOM has expanded to a conference covering all kinds of Information and CommunicationTechnology in the mineral industry: Already in 2005 on the conference in Tuscon/AZ, theterm “Mining Process Optimization” was presented as the next paradigm shift in miningafter mechanization and automation, which marked another example of the continuedinnovative impact of the APCOM. Well ahead of the current discussions about “DigitalTransformation”.

Abstract

For over 130 years, Imperial Oil dominated Canada’s oil industry. From Petrolia to Turner Valley, Imperial was always nearby and ready to take charge. Their 1947 discovery of crude oil in Leduc, Alberta transformed the industry and the country. But from 1899 onwards, two-thirds of the company was owned by an American giant, making Imperial Oil one of the largest foreign-controlled multinationals in Canada. Imperial Standard is the first full-scale history of Imperial Oil. It illuminates Imperial’s longstanding connections to Standard Oil of New Jersey, also known as Exxon Mobil. Although this relationship was often beneficial to Imperial, allowing them access to technology and capital, it also came at a cost. During the energy crises of the 1970s and 80s, Imperial was assailed as the embodiment of foreign control of Canada’s natural resources, and in the 1990s it followed Exxon’s lead in resisting charges that the oil industry contributes to climate change.Graham D. Taylor draws on an extensive collection of primary sources, including both the Imperial Oil and Exxon Mobil archives, to explore the complex relationship between the two companies. This groundbreaking history provides unprecedented insight into one of Canada’s most influential oil companies as well as the industry itself.

Abstract

Abstract

The continued existence of the Russian defence and arms industry (OPK) was called into question following the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. Industry experts cited the lack of a domestic market, endemic corruption, and excess capacity within the industry as factors underpinning its predicted demise. However, the industry’s export customers in China, India and Iran during those early years became the OPK’s saving grace. Their orders introduced hard currency back into the industry and went a long way to preventing the forecasted OPK collapse. Although pessimistic predictions continued to plague the OPK throughout the 1990s, the valuable export dollars provided the OPK the breathing space it needed to claw back its competitive advantage as an arms producer. That revival has been further underpinned by a new political commitment, various research and development initiatives, and the restoration of defence industry as a tool of Russian foreign policy. The short-term future of the Russian OPK looks promising. The rising domestic defence order is beginning to challenge the export market as the OPK’s most important customer. Meanwhile, exports will be safeguarded by continued foreign demand for niche Russian defence products. Although the long-term future of the OPK is more difficult to predict, Russia’s solid research and development foundation and successful international joint military ventures suggest that the current thriving trend in exports is likely to continue. Russia represents the next generation of affordable and rugged military equipment for the arsenals of the developing world. Coupled with Russia’s growing ability to rearm itself through higher oil prices and a more streamlined defence industry, the future of the OPK looks bright.

Abstract

The Media Welfare State: Nordic Media in the Digital Age is the first theoretically-driven book to comprehensively address the central dynamics of the digitalization of the media industry in the Nordic countries – Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland – and the ways media organizations there are transforming to address the new digital environment. The authors address Nordic media-industry structure and content from the standpoint of scholarly perspectives on global, regional and local approaches to media development. Taking a comparative approach, they provide an overview of media institutions and policy throughout the region, focusing on the impact of Information and Communication Technology/Internet and digitalization on the Nordic media sector. As illustrations, the authors draw on a wide range of cases, including developments in media forms such as television, radio, the press and the public service media institution.

Abstract

China’s Arctic Ambitions and What They Mean for Canada is one of the first in-depth studies of China’s increasing interest in the Arctic. It offers a holistic approach to understanding Chinese motivations and the potential impacts of greater Chinese presence in the circumpolar region, exploring resource development, shipping, scientific research, governance, and security.Drawing on extensive research in Chinese government documentation, business and media reports, and current academic literature, this timely volume eschews the traditional assumption that Chinese actions are unified and monolithic in their approach to Arctic affairs. Instead, it offers a careful analysis of the different, and often competing, interests and priorities of Chinese government and industry.Analyzing Chinese interests and activities from a Canadian perspective, the book provides an unparalleled point of reference to discuss the implications for the Canadian and broader circumpolar North.
