Many parents fear the time when their beautiful happy children will become unmanageable adolescents continually engaging in risky or destructive behaviour. Unfortunately, this view of adolescents is the focus of the media, even though it relates to just a small proportion of young people. As the large amount of research we report shows, most adolescents are responsible young people who care about their families and crave the support of their parents. It is also true, however, as much research indicates, that the quality of the relationship parents have with their adolescents is crucial to the wellbeing of those young people. We discuss the need for parents to set reasonable limits on their adolescents and to expect appropriate behavior. We also show, on the basis of research, that children who have experienced positive, caring relationships with their parents are more likely than other adolescents to behave responsibly. In other words, behavior in adolescence does not ‘come out of nowhere’ but builds on earlier experiences in the family.Because of the large amount of research reported in this volume, we expect that it will be useful to practitioners from a range of professions that are likely to focus on adolescents: social workers, youth leaders, welfare workers, religious leaders, psychologists and psychiatrists and contribute to a better understanding of young people and their development, and the importance of families to that development.

"What are the conditions children and young people experience in the city? What opportunities does the city provide for interaction between people and urban spaces and places? What sociomaterial conditions for participation exist in institutions for children and young people? Can urban spaces, places and sociomateriality function in unexpected ways for children and young people? The topic of this book is the interaction between people and spaces, places and sociomateriality. The authors focus on the city as an object and as a context for children and young people growing up and engaging in play and activities. In addition, sociomaterial conditions in institutions for children and adolescents (daycare centres, schools and child protection services), as well as their interaction with professionals, are also analysed. This anthology includes eleven peer-reviewed academic chapters. The authors are researchers at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University – in social and health studies, preschool teacher studies, the aesthetic disciplines and at the Centre for Welfare and Labour Research (SVA), the university’s institute for commissioned research. The book will be of interest to all those concerned with the conditions of children and young people and the interaction between human agency and its material context in cities and institutions for children and adolescents: researchers, staff and students in social and health studies and teacher training programmes, as well as practitioners."

A reliable diagnosis of the state of motor development requires objective and reliable test procedures. As part of the MoMo Baseline Study, the motor fitness of 4529 children and adolescents in Germany was evaluated by using the MoMo Performance Test (11 motor and computer based tests). The data obtained served as a basis for the compilation of nationwide representative standard values. By using these values, it is possible to classify the state of motor fitness and follow its development.

This open access book considers the stories of adolescents and young adults from different regions of the world who use digital media as instruments and stages for storytelling, or who make the media the subject of story telling. These narratives discuss interconnectedness, self-staging, and managing boundaries. From the perspective of media and cultural research, they can be read as responses to the challenges of contemporary society. Providing empirical evidence and thought-provoking explanations, this book will be useful to students and scholars who wish to uncover how ongoing processes of cultural transformation are reflected in the thoughts and feelings of the internet generation.

I made the important decision to manage a Special Issue, because I believe it to be extremely important to focus on children’s and adolescents’ physiological and psychological development. I aimed to collect research that investigates the role of physical activity and sport on physical and mental well-being, with a particular focus on practical implications, innovation, tools, and technique. This Special Issue, “Health Promotion in Children and Adolescents through Sport and Physical Activities” addresses pediatric exercise science as a key scientific discipline able to help future generations live longer and better. It is already clear that sedentariness and a low level of muscular strength and power significantly affects cognitive functions and daily relations, but it is interesting to understand the key determinants and how we can help practitioners better manage these concerns in their patients. Authors were invited to submit letters, original research papers, case studies, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews.
