Abstract

Power-line communications (PLC) in traction batteries is a promising data bus concept for battery management systems. This work presents a channel modeling approach, as well as an analysis of the PLC channel behavior and noise based on measurements. Furthermore, single-carrier and multi-carrier communication systems are designed, evaluated by simulations, and compared among them.

Abstract

The storage of energy is one main bottle-neck of the german energy transition. The lithium-sulfur battery with its high theoretical specific values can here play a major role. Depending on the composition and production of the cathode, the electrochemical characteristics of the battery vary greatly. In this work, the influence of the cathode structure and composition was analysed in terms of capacity and lifetime of lithium-sulfur cells.

Abstract

In order to understand the current-voltage behaviour of a Lithium-Ion Battery, its impedance needs to be investigated in the low-frequency domain. This work deals with measurement, modelling and model validation in that low-frequency domain and introduces the Distribution-Function-of-Differential-Capacity (DDC) as a new tool for investigating capacity contributions of different particle sizes and particle types inside of a Lithium-Ion Battery.

Abstract

Due to its high operating voltage the so-called high voltage spinel (LiNi0,5Mn1,5O4) is a promising cathode material. In this work the kinetics of the capacity loss during cycling and its change due to different coatings are analyzed. In a second part the electrochemical behavior for the insertion of a second lithium per formula unit is discussed for different doped spinel materials.

Abstract

The model-aided cathode design for lithium ion batteries is presented, which enables a systematically minimization of loss processes and an increase of power and energy density. The cathode model is parametrized without values from literature by combining microstructure analysis via FIB/SEM tomography and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and finally validated.

Abstract

This thesis introduces (i) amendments to basic electrochemical measurement techniques in the time and frequency domain suitable for electrochemical energy conversion systems like fuel cells and batteries, which enable shorter measurement times and improved precision in both measurement and parameter identification, and (ii) a modeling approach that is able to simulate a technically relevant system just by information gained through static and impedance measurements of laboratory size cells.

Abstract

This work introduces a novel wireless approach for the data transmission within automotive battery management systems. The main target is the reduction of the wiring harness deployed in a battery. The characteristics of the wireless in-battery channel are investigated by means of measurements and software-based electromagnetic simulations. Different types of antennas and frequency bands are analyzed. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by means of simulations and prototypes.
