Abstract

This book describes and compares at different systemic levels the contractions of prepositions and articles in German and Italian, two languages that are representative of divergent grammatical development. The author’s intra and inter lingual analyses consider both diachronic and synchronic aspects and are empirically supported by large-scale quantitative and qualitative corpus investigations.

Abstract

Heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. Straightforward information about the cardiac electrophysiology can help to improve the quality of diagnosis of heart diseases. The inverse problem of electrocardiography and the intracardiac catheter measurement are two ways to get access to the electrophysiology in the heart. In this thesis six research topics related to these two techniques are included.

Abstract

Tweets, text messages, Facebook status updates, or microblog entries: the process of announcing news and sharing knowledge seems to be getting shorter and shorter. This volume relates the current trend of abbreviation to its antecedents, showing that the use of brevity existed long before the digital age. The career of the short form is closely connected to the cultural achievements of the 17th century, and skyrocketed in the run up to the formation of professional media networks in the 19th century. Since then, anecdotes, case studies, brief messages, the miscellaneous, headlines, and tidbits from around the world have formed essential elements of the organization and communication of modern forms of knowledge.

Abstract

The year 2019 has been prolific in terms of new evidence regarding the effects of coffee and caffeine consumption on diverse aspects of human functioning. This book collects 20 high-quality manuscripts published in Nutrients that include original investigation or systematic review studies of the effects of caffeine intake on human performance and health. The diversity of the articles published in this Special Issue highlights the extent of the effects of coffee and caffeine on human functioning, while underpinning the positive nature of most of these effects. This book will help with understanding why the natural sources of caffeine are so widely present in the nutrition behaviors of modern society.

Abstract

Microwave imaging techniques allow for the development of systems that are able to inspect, identify, and characterize in a noninvasive fashion under different scenarios, ranging from biomedical to subsurface diagnostics as well as from surveillance and security applications to nondestructive evaluation. Such great opportunities, though, are actually severely limited by difficulties arising from the solution of the underlying inverse scattering problem. As a result, ongoing research efforts in this area are devoted to developing inversion strategies and experimental apparatus so that they are as reliable and accurate as possible with respect to reconstruction capabilities and resolution performance, respectively. The intent of this Special Issue is to present the experiences of leading scientists in the electromagnetic inverse scattering community, as well as to serve as an assessment tool for people who are new to the area of microwave imaging and electromagnetic inverse scattering problems.

Abstract

It has been more than 25 years since the identification of the FMR1 gene and the demonstration of the causative role of CGG-repeat expansion in the disease pathology of fragile X syndrome (FXS), but the underlying mechanisms involved in the expansion mutation and the resulting gene silencing still remain elusive. Our understanding of the pathways impacted by the loss of FMRP function has grown tremendously, and has opened new avenues for targeted treatments for FXS. However, the failure of recent clinical trials that were based on successful preclinical studies using the Fmr1 knockout mouse model has forced the scientific community to revisit clinical trial design and identify objective outcome measures. There has also been a renewed interest in restoring FMR1 gene expression as a possible treatment approach for FXS. This special issue of Brain Sciences highlights the progress that has been made towards understanding the disease mechanisms and how this has informed the development of treatment strategies that are being explored for FXS.

Abstract

Graph theory is an important area of applied mathematics with a broad spectrum of applications in many fields. This book results from aSpecialIssue in the journal Mathematics entitled “Graph-Theoretic Problems and Their New Applications”. It contains 20 articles covering a broad spectrum of graph-theoretic works that were selected from 151 submitted papers after a thorough refereeing process. Among others, it includes a deep survey on mixed graphs and their use for solutions ti scheduling problems. Other subjects include topological indices, domination numbers of graphs, domination games, contraction mappings, and neutrosophic graphs. Several applications of graph theory are discussed, e.g., the use of graph theory in the context of molecular processes.
