Abstract

Souverains et Pontifes, c’est-à-dire à la fois maîtres temporels d’un État s’étendant de Rome à Bologne au centre la péninsule italienne et chefs spirituels d’une Église qui s’affirme catholique, c’est-à-dire universelle, les papes de la Restauration – Pie VII, Léon XII, Pie VIII et Grégoire XVI – ont été, de la restitution des États de l’Église à la papauté en 1814 jusqu’à l’avènement du dernier « pape-roi », Pie IX en 1846, au centre d’un vaste et complexe dispositif institutionnel où quelques centaines d’acteurs - cardinaux, prélats et officiers de Curie - ont œuvré à la fois à l’administration civile de l’État ecclésiastique à l’été de la Saint-Martin de son destin historique et au gouvernement de l’Église romaine à l’aube de sa reconstitution. À partir d’une analyse institutionnelle des différents dicastères dont se compose la Curie et d’une étude prosopographique de son personnel (soit un ensemble de 805 biographies individuelles : 158 cardinaux de Curie, 288 prélats référendaires et 359 consulteurs de congrégations et officiers mineurs, ecclésiastiques et laïcs, en poste entre le 4 mai 1814 et le 1er juin 1846), le présent travail se propose de mieux connaître et comprendre, de l’intérieur, l’organisation et le fonctionnement de la Curie romaine ainsi que les lentes recompositions et les silencieuses mutations qui l’affectent à l’âge des restaurations politiques et des révolutions libérales, des concordats et des missions et de la réaffirmation intransigeante de la foi et de la discipline catholiques.

Abstract

Le pontificat de Pie IX fut à la fois le plus long de l’histoire de la succession apostolique et celui du dernier “Papa-Re”, entouré d’une Curie romaine chargée du gouvernement de l’Église et de ses États. L’échec des concessions « constitutionnalistes » de 1847-1848 puis l’exil à Gaète déterminèrent une restauration autoritaire, confirmant la Curie comme le conservatoire de pratiques de gouvernement spécifiques. Face au mouvement unitaire italien, la Curie multiplia les adresses théologiques et doctrinales, jusqu’à la réunion du premier concile œcuménique du Vatican ; la brèche de la Porta Pia parut alors solder le combat de l’histoire contre l’éternité. La réclusion de la Curie, partageant la condition d’un pape prisonnier de l’Italie, l’inscrivit dans une logique de gouvernement sans État, entamant un processus de spiritualisation forcée articulé sur l’ecclésiologie de la societas perfecta. Adaptations et réformes mûrirent au long du pontificat de Léon XIII, préparant la mutation définitive de la Curie. Il revint à Pie X, pourtant sans expérience curiale, d’en remodeler le visage (constitution Sapienti consilio, 1908) et d’entreprendre la révision des assises juridiques de l’Église (Codex iuris canonici, 1917). Ayant cessé de servir un pape qui fût aussi un roi, la Curie demeurait l’auxiliaire d’un successeur de Pierre dont le pouvoir pour partie ancré à une terre avait laissé place à une autorité renouvelée sur le monde.

Abstract

Les historiens se sont intéressés tardivement à la question de la gouvernance ecclésiale. La journée d’étude organisée par le LARHRA à Lyon en 2013 avait pour but d’envisager les e jeux d’échelles structurant le gouvernement de l’Église catholique au xxe siècle. L’examen de plusieurs niveaux (romain, national, diocésain, congréganiste) dans l’espace de la catholicité européenne est apparu comme un moyen d’ouvrir la voie vers une histoire plus large, transnationale, du catholicisme contemporain au sein duquel circulent des modèles de gouvernance et de nouvelles figures de pouvoir fondant leur légitimité sur le savoir et l’expertise.

Abstract
