Abstract

Prompted by renowned poet E.D. Blodgett's deep love for and intimate experience of Prague, Praha is a poetic homage to the legendary city's vital spirit. As they build on one another, the poems in the collection lift the reader over the threshold of purely mythic understanding and into the heart of one of Europe's loveliest and most venerable cities. Each poem is accompanied by a translation into Czech, encouraging even those who do not know the language to immerse themselves in its sound. Superbly complemented by the mysteriously eloquent paintings of Czech artist Robert Kessner, Praha offers the moods of Prague in its many seasons and in all its magic.

Abstract

In the history of Czech linguistic theory and thought there is hardly a book more controversial than the grammar of Václav J. Rosa (1620-1689), Čechořečnost seu Grammatica Linguae Bohemicae. It appeared in 1672, two years after Comenius's death, at the beginning of the dark age (temno) which came to symbolize for the revivalist tradition, haunted as it was by the past, the decadence of Czech literature, culture and national spirit. Given this, Rosa's grammar (henceforth RG) was inevitably destined to acquire the stigma of the same degenerate qualities which corrupted the nation's very soul, ist language. Abstract

The following three essays and transcription of the Old Chech "Legenda o svaté Kateřině" do not make up a rigogous textual study in the familiar sense - this work was completed half a century and more ago by the philologists Spina and Gebauer. Chapter I seeks to identify multiple sets of spellings habits from close study of the single copy ot this fourteenth century poetic masterpiece. Chapter II studies the literary stylization of tense and aspect...

Abstract

The monograph explores, by means of a diachronic overview, the ways in which historical dramas in Czech literature changed between the outset of the Czech national rebirth and the Republic of Czechoslovakia between the wars. The investigation is based on the fundamental notion that allegorical structures in historical dramas refer to the time at which a given work is created. A general overview on theoretical and historical aspect of Historical Drama leads into the study.

Abstract

The main issues arising from the encounter between Roma people and surrounding European society since the time of their arrival in Medieval Europe until today are discussed in this work. The history of their persecution and genocide during the Nazi era, in particular, is central to the present volume. Significantly, some authors sought to emphasize the continuing history of prejudice and persecution, which reached a peak during the Nazi era and persisted after the war. Current questions of so...

Abstract

This is the second part of the third volume of the four-volume series, a daring project of CEU Press, presenting the most important texts that triggered and shaped the processes of nation-building in the many countries of Central and Southeast Europe. The aim is to confront ‘mainstream’ and seemingly successful national discourses with each other, thus creating a space for analyzing those narratives of identity which became institutionalized as “national canons.” After the volumes focousing ...

Abstract

Cognitive linguistic research suggests that Slavic verbal prefix semantics may be profitably described by assuming a spatial prototype, and that non-spatial (abstract) prefixes derive metaphorically from this prototype. This dissertation uses a cognitive linguistic framework to establish a concise, systematic description of prototypes for prefixes and prepositions in Russian and Czech, and evaluates the nature of the relationship among the various senses of prefixes. The research presented here is aimed at carefully establishing the spatial meaning of prefixes. The primary motive for this research, however, is to evaluate the nature of the relation between spatial uses and abstract uses and to determine if abstract uses do indeed involve primarily spatial metaphor. A significant portion of the dissertation, therefore, is devoted to a discussion of the connection between spatial and abstract prefixation. A secondary purpose is to compare the spatial and abstract uses of prefixes in Czech and Russian, and to see whether differences in the verbal systems of these two languages can be correlated with underlying semantic differences at the spatial level.

Abstract

The first level of the present work is methodologically concerned with the planned Prague corpus of spoken Czech. Spoken texts are recorded, fixed in writing and arranged according to linguistic and sociological criteria and evaluated. The goal is to sketch the current situation in spoken Czech from the recordings and thus to contribute to the above-mentioned discussion about the relationship between ST vs. ST. GT. The second level of this study complements the evaluation of the linguistic material. Sociological data collected by questionnaires and data provided by the same speakers in the field of ST: 1) knowledge (cognition); 2) degree of positive evaluation; 3) but above all the readiness (Konation) of the speaker for use of the ST examined. The attitude of the Czechs to their standard language, secondary to their Koine, is here in the foreground. This publication makes an important contribution to the intensified discussions about Standard Czech and Common Czech (Bohemian Koiné) since the political change in the Czech Republic.
