Abstract

The study analyses Cold War discourses in Austrian post-war literature, a subject that so far has been neglected in Austrian literary history. Through extensive research, 50 mainly unknown or little acknowledged novels, stories, plays and scenes were discovered which discuss phenomena of the Cold War that defined the first post-war decades. The theoretical focus on New Historicism allows an analysis of a broad spectrum of thematic clusters, images, discursive constellations and narratives which are contextualised both in national and international Cold War discourse./ In 15 chapters, the study discusses the discursive patterns of more than 50 rather unknown books from Austrian literature from the period 1945 to 1966, such as constructions and imaginations of borders, fictive travels behind the Iron Curtain, the Gulag, and metaphors of disease and narratives of espionage. These discourse patterns are positioned within the context of the Cold War.

Abstract

Society appears to us today in the flickering light of instability. It has not just been since the financial crisis that matters related to working and living conditions have proved themselves to be precarious. The author introduces the most important economic and sociological theories of precarization, and demonstrates that precarity has seized society in its entirety. We live in the society of precarity. But what can be drawn from this? Marchart describes contemporary social protests and their demands. He investigates their democratic and political implications and works towards a social theory of the conflict and of its contingencies.

The aim of the research is to demonstrate, using the example of the field of semantics, that the political lexicism of the Russian language of the twentieth century, despite its variability, forms a historical and supra-ideological unity, which continues to be closely linked to the lexicon of a general discourse. The following questions set the framework for the analysis: 1) How uniform and complex is the system of meanings in the political lexic of the Russian language in the twentieth century; 2) how continuous has the semantic development of this vocabulary area been; 3) what general regularities has the development process followed; 4) how does the political lexicon relate to the overall lexical-semantic system of the Russian language or to the overall system of international political lexicism?

Abstract

This book analyses the portrayal of nuclear power in Japanese journalism and the factors that influence it. Combining a field theoretical approach to journalism with frame analysis on different levels of the communication process, the author argues that the nuclear industry in Japan used its financial power to form a ‘pro-nuclear civil society’ and that this frame sponsorship is the reason for the relatively positive portrayal of nuclear power in Japan until 2011. After ‘Fukushima’, journalistic autonomy in this domain increased and journalism became a driving force of change in nuclear policy. At the same time, the field of journalism became polarised because its more heteronomous parts remained integrated into the ‘pro-nuclear civil society’. This book offers a new perspective on the Japanese media and journalism in Japan, emphasising heterogeneity and change in contrast to previous research, which focused on press clubs as institutions of pervasive media control.
