Abstract

The view of modernism as representing an epistemological break between technology and history and tradition has long been challenged. Le Corbusier’s work has proved to be an inexhaustible reference point in this debate. This is due, on the one hand, to the legacy of nineteenth-century historicism, and on the other to his creative process of creation through destruction which, as John Summerson has noted, is comparable to the processes of avant-garde poets and painters. The contributions to this book explore particular episodes which bring to light both the operative role of the past in the creation of a new abstract synthesis, and Le Corbusier’s modernist historical consciousness. They illustrate how the past participated in the modernist creative process of abstract art, from the 1920s machine aesthetics to the late infatuation with myth. They also shed light on the extent to which the operative quality of the history was framed by a comprehensive historical vision that took the form of metanarrative, which neither the analytical studies on his architecture nor the synthetic approaches to his philosophical thinking should dismiss.

Abstract

This book addresses both domestic and foreign readers, and for thatreason appears in English. Following the survey of history of the LisbonExchange published in 1996 by David Justino, the present text extendsthat medieval period to the Nineteenth century analysis to the presentday. Many other Stock Exchanges in Europe and elsewhere have beenstudied and published by many authors, but no comparable book forPortugal has existed until the present work. The text is accessible tomedium-knowledge readers. In a world of internationalization ofcorporations and financial institutions it is paramount that they beable to mobilize the capacities of the Capital Market to finance theeconomy, and to possess a thorough understanding of the role of a Stock Exchangefor the efficient working of that market. Portugal is a case of greatinterest to developing countries, as it was able to re-instate themarket after 1974, and with such success that the country joined theEuropean Union in 1986 and the innovative Euronext Group of StockExchanges in 2002. The book discloses for the first time a database usedto calculate a share index that was developed over three years with thehelp of the FCT grant PTDC/HISHIS/100132/2008, and using a methodologythat makes that index comparable to common international indices andcompatible with the General Index computeddaily by the Exchange.

Abstract

Public sector accounting (PSA) and reporting was subject to considerable national reforms during the last decades and is in the focus of the European Commission aiming to harmonize the accounting systems of its Member States by developing European Public Sector Accounting Standards (EPSAS). Therefore, the topic is of high relevance for both academia and practitioners. This book provides different views about PSA in Europe as of today. It spans topics such as history of PSA, its differences to private sector accounting and finance statistics, as well as budgeting. A main part is devoted to International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) by addressing their spread, conceptual framework and selected public sector specific standards, including a case study. Also, consolidated financial reporting is covered by drawing examples. This textbook is not only of use for students and researchers, but interested readers that seek for broad perspectives on PSA such as practitioners and members of intergovernmental organisations. It intends to complement university teaching modules on PSA as those accessible for free under www.offene.uni-rostock.de/online-course-european-public-sector-accounting.

Abstract

The present book aims to highlight the importance and gains of the Bologna reforms, but also to reflect on the unfulfilled promises and the technical and substantive ambiguities that it may bear. A necessary debate in a moment of profound reflection on the pertinence, place, consistency and usefulness of the knowledge produced in higher institutions and on how it is disseminated and replicated. In the background a renewed discussion on the cultural and normative patterns of contemporary societies: what kind of knowledge is being produced today? How the relationship between teachers and students has changed? How the issues of plurality and respect for difference are placed in contexts of greater mobility and internationalization? How the equity in access and attendance of higher education is ensured by greater pressures for effectiveness and comparability? These and other issues are addressed in the various chapters of the book.

Abstract

The book aims at presenting less known or completly unknown family archives. It proposes to question them and to analyze them under new perspectives (both from history and archival science), in order to found the "voices" if its producers - and thus to develop new research questions. It comprises three parts: "Recovering, reconstructing and (re)discovering family and personal archives"; "From a social, political and cultural history of the families to a social history of the archives"; "Public preservation and promotion of family and personal archives".

Abstract

The IGU currently has 34 commissions. Of these, CO.27 - Marginalization, Globalization, and Regional and Local Responses has, at various levels, geographers from the University of Coimbra. The organization of this publication is the outcome of the involvement of members of the Centro de Estudos de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território (CEGOT) in meetings of the International Geographical Union Marginalization, Globalization, and Regional and Local Responses commission.

A series of works that analyse various socio-economic, demographic and physical realities in mainland Portugal are presented. Focusing particularly on territories in Central Portugal these works do, in fact, clarify the diversity of the importance of Coimbra’s School of Geography in Portuguese geographical research.

This work therefore contemplates a spread of research issues that cover the potential and problems of society and the environment in Portugal, and it is certainly helpful to understanding Portugueses society in the early 21st century.

Abstract

This book has been produced as a tribute to the work of Martin Lee on the role of sport in the socio-moral education of young people. After conducting the first UK conference on Children in Sport, founded the Institute for the Study of Children in Sport at Bedford College of Higher Education in 1986 and created level 1, 2 and 3 courses on coaching children for the National Coaching Foundation. He also edited a book on Coaching Children in Sport. His course book on Coaching Children in Mini-basketball was produced for international distribution. The study of values has been central in Martin’s research which also embraced such topics as self-concept, leadership, coaching behaviour, and parental influence. In a series of research commissions examined the literature, clarified measurement requirements, identified values activated in sport, and led an international project on fair play. He then ran a survey to show how values influence attitudes directly and through the mediation of achievement goals. Two new instruments arose from this research: the Attitudes to Moral Decision-making in Youth Sport Questionnaire and the Youth Sport Values Questionnaire-2. These will open up research into gamesmanship, by which competitors seek an unfair advantage without breaking the rules, and into the mechanisms by which moral, competence and status values guide behaviour and create value conflicts. I am also grateful to colleagues at the University of Coimbra for their initiative in gathering the distinguished international scholars who have contributed to this book. Their collective insights will enhance the understanding of socio-moral education through sport and lead to informed and sensitive policy development in both sport and education.

Abstract

The tools used in scientific research are constantly changing and HPLC with photodiode array detection technique has become an important and popular technology used in studies such as plant extract analysis, drug discovery and development, the monitoring of manufacturing processes and quality assurance. The HPLC/photodiode array technique is also an important base tool of pure science. The authors have provided a compilation of valuable and unique reference material, gathered using strictly controlled conditions, and have developed theoretical rules that will aid users of this technique in the identification of the structures of the titled compound types. These compound types are widely encountered in bioactive plant components. The book will have appeal not only to academic chemists but also for example to biologists, food technologists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, the health supplements industry and the colourant industry. To our knowledge this is the first book of its kind to present and interpret a compilation of actual spectra of a series of authentic compounds, measured under identical and defined conditions that practitioners can use for direct comparison with their own data.

Abstract

This volume is the fruit of a highly productive international research gathering academic and professional (field- and museum) colleagues to discuss new results and approaches, recent finds and alternative theoretical assessments of the period of transition and transformation of classical towns in Late Antiquity. Experts from an array of modern countries attended and presented to help compare and contrast critically archaeologies of diverse regions and to debate the qualities of the archaeology and the current modes of study. While a number of papers inevitably focused on evidence available for both Spain and Portugal, we were delighted to have a spread of contributions that extended the picture to other territories in the Late Roman West and Mediterranean. The emphasis was very much on the images presented by archaeology (rescue and research works, recent and past), but textual data were also brought into play by various contributors.
