The urban evolution of Florence in the first thirteen centuries of its history is delineated here via a census of the archaeological finds, starting from those documented in the second half of the nineteenth century. The information has been organised and analysed through the use of Geographic Information Systems. The finds have been broken down by period and in terms of function, so as to describe, where possible, the evolution of the buildings and the public spaces and the changes in ways of living and approaches to burial, defence and production over the course of time. The Florentine data are considered within the regional and Italian framework mapped by archaeological research over the last few decades. Theme maps created using GIS further enhance the understanding of the text.

The Stanze della Moda project has set up an Observatory with the purpose of economic and management monitoring of the fabric of the Florentine companies through a marketing and research workshop. The analysis of several major international retailers demonstrates the emergence of a successful business model which, albeit in some respects idiosyncratic and difficult to transfer, represents an innovative stimulus for companies in the sector that want to redefine their competitiveness in the face of the altered market conditions. The focus on the Florentine companies delineates the ways in which the local manufacturers intercept the purchasing channels of major retail, creating a mediated form of sales on the international markets.

Il volume raccoglie gli atti del convegno "Università e Territorio. Il decentramento dell'Ateneo nella Provincia di Firenze" tenutosi a Firenze il 23 gennaio 2004. Il convegno ha affrontato con ampia partecipazione d'interventi, di dibattito e di pubblico le questioni inerenti il decentramento delle attività formative e scientifiche nei comuni della Provincia, con particolare riferimento agli insediamenti universitari di Calenzano, Scandicci, Sesto Fiorentino, Vaglia, Figline Valdarno, San Casciano Val di Pesa e Circondario Empolese Valdelsa. Il convegno è stato pensato come momento d'incontro e di dialogo fra Sindaci, altri amministratori locali e Presidenti dei corsi di laurea ed ha evidenziato la molteplicità e differenziazione delle attività e la complessità dei problemi inerenti l'insediamento dei corsi di studio nelle diverse realtà economico-sociali dei comuni della Provincia di Firenze.

Despite the evident importance of the youth question in the ambit of modern society, in practice the consideration of young people as a category of consumers frequently prevails over the valorisation of their role as citizens. This survey – triggered by a synergy between the Provincial Authority and the University – focuses the attitudes and orientations of young people, both Italian and immigrants, in the Province of Florence. The objective is to bring to the fore the dynamic and more strictly civic aspect, so as to explore themes such as the shifts in values and the security, identity and participation of the new generations. The analysis effectively brings to light a widespread ambivalence, comprising both the innovative characteristics of individualism and other features that hark back to traditionally consolidated legacies. What emerges is the sense of a social mutation that is already under way, but still in transition, in which young people play a role of considerable significance.
