Abstract

In the first third of the 20th century more women acquired habilitation at the Viennese German Department than at any other Department in the German speaking countries. In 1921, the postdoctoral license to teach was awarded to Christine Touaillon (1978-1928), a literary historian, in 1924, it was granted to Marianne Thalmann (1888-1975), a scholar of literary Romanticism, and in 1927, it was permitted to Lily Weiser (1898-1987), a German ethnologist. On the basis of these findings, the thesis analyzes the scientific and institutional constitution of Viennese German Studies, and reveals that the self-conception and the disciplinary differentiation of an academic field substantially affect its personnel policy and therefore the status of female scholars.

Abstract

At present, Macedonia is again increasingly present in the German-speaking media discourse, in particular due to the so-called "name dispute" with Greece. But what is it when we talk about Macedonia? The media representation of the region often remains diffuse and is strongly influenced by stereotypes. In his comprehensive analysis, Benjamin Langer shows for the first time how this south-eastern European region was shaped in German-language texts from a terra incognita on the periphery of Europe and provided with attributions. In ten thematic chapters, he shows how powerful these images are despite their contradictions and changing instrumentalization to this day.

Abstract

Interdisciplinary cooperation enables the two authors to precicly localize and date one of the most lavishly produced manuscript of a medieval German epic during 15th century. With the combination of art-historical and linguistic methods the “Münchener Jüngere Titurel” (BSB, Cgm 8470) – hithero beliefed to be of Tyrolian or Vienese origin – was dated (c. 1430/35) and localised (Regensburg). The exemplary study proves the potential of cooperations within the humanities.
