Abstract

This book explores the poetic articulations of a shift from a transcendent to an immanent worldview, as reflected in the manner of evaluation of body and soul in Goethe’s Faust and Ḥāfiẓ’ Divan. Focusing on two lifeworks that illustrate their authors’ respective intellectual histories, this cross-genre study goes beyond the textual confines of the two poets’ Divans to compare important building blocks of their intellectual worlds.

Abstract

Abstract

The study provides an overview of one of the most intensive phases of German-Polish literature exchange before the reciprocal contacts promoted by Poland until the mid-19th century, not least due to political reasons. The German-Polish literature relations have enjoyed quite a lot of interest in the last decades. However, the previous research concentrates on the one hand cultural-historical, the narrower literary area often far-reaching aspects, such as studies on the echo of the Polish uprisings in Germany, on the other hand on the reception of the work of individual personalities. The present work seeks to close some of the previous gaps by presenting the Polish-German literary relations of that time in their entirety in a condensed overview, focused on the respective literature reception in the form of translations and journalistic reactions under the broadest possible evaluation of German and Polish periodicals.

Abstract

Poetical representations of maternal filicide constitute the conceptual axis for the present study. I examine three playwrights which, even though separated in time, share the common interest for such a tragic matter. From this point of view, Euripides’ Medea (431 BC), Goethe’s Gretchentragödie (1790) and García Lorca’s Yerma (1934) stand out as plays in which the tragic meaning rests in the irony of having a child being murdered by the very same person who gave him life. Filicide, in these cases, works mostly as a meaningful metaphor for both the female body and women’s nature as tragic households of primordial conflicts: the sacred vs. reason, aesthetics vs. politics, literature vs. philosophy, intuition vs. concept. As such, this book offers a comparative reading of the aforementioned authors as well as the intellectual debate brought out by their tragedies, namely the discussions about the value of poetry and catharsis (Plato and Aristotle), the themes of sublime and will (Kant, Schiller, Schopenhauer), and the contemporary reassessments of the tragic proposed by Nietzsche and Unamuno

Abstract

The collection of essays considers the art journal Propyläen that was edited by Goethe in the years between 1798 and 1800 for the first time as a whole. This enterprise, which was of great significance for the history of aesthetics, will be placed in a new light. The book situates the texts within their historical contexts, and thus provides a key resource for future research, for literary as well as art studies.

Abstract

Abstract

This book shows that William Shakespeare was a more personal writer than any of his innumerable commentators have realised. It asserts that numerous characters and events were drawn from the author's life, and puts faces to the names of Jaques, Touchstone, Feste, Jessica, the 'Dark Lady' and others.Steven Sohmer explores aspects of Shakespeare's plays and sonnets that have been hitherto overlooked or misinterpreted in an effort to better understand the man and his work. If you've ever wondered who Pigrogromitus was, or why Jaques spies on Touchstone and Audrey - or what the famous riddle M.O.A.I. stands for - this is the book for you.
