Abstract

The book ""Thrombocytopenia"" certainly raises some important issues in its pathogenesis and management. The authors have done a lot of hard work to write state-of-the-art chapters. Each and every chapter is peer-reviewed, evidence-based, and remarkably excellent. Some of the causes of thrombocytopenia are well explained in textbooks, but the topics included in this book are not usually so well described. The chapters are written in such a manner so as to stimulate and keep the reader well-informed. Such an approach is certainly beneficial when aiming to motivate discussion, interaction, innovation, and research. Chapters like ""Interferon-Induced Thrombotic Microangiopathy"" have been included with the aim to help in understanding the immune pathogenesis of thrombocytopenia. Others have also been selected to keep an eye on the future.

Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic immune-mediated inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract of unknown origin, which includes Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease of unclassified type. It is associated with different intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations like different neurological and psychiatric disorders. Histology is an important tool in the diagnosis and prognosis of inflammatory bowel disease and has an increasing part in patients' management. The objective of treatment is to make and keep long-lasting remission by immunosuppressive treatment like corticosteroids, thiopurines, and monoclonal antibodies directed against tumor necrosis factor alpha. Therapeutic drug monitoring of thiopurines by measuring levels of their metabolites has been proposed as a potentially effective tool in optimizing therapy in inflammatory bowel disease. Diets and their components influence microbiota of the intestine, function of the epithelial barrier, immune response, and other factors that have an important role in development and treatment of inflammation in the gut mucosa.

Abstract

The last century has witnessed tremendous changes in the education and training system of medical students, as well as medical and surgical residents, in short, our future physicians. This has been the result of the changes in the educational philosophy, the technology, and the needs of our patients, just to name a few. The challenge is to learn more about the various systems in medical education throughout the world and identify advantages and disadvantages, a process from which we can all (and most importantly our patients) benefit from. This book is a compilation of the experiences, thoughts, and ""best-practice"" advice of a panel of international experts on medical and surgical education.

Abstract

The development of diabetic retinopathy is a long slow process affected by hyperglycemia, hypertension, lipid levels and genetics. It is expected that in 20 years' duration nearly all those with diabetes will exhibit diabetic retinopathy. In some patients, it will progress to blindness. While the number of individuals with diabetes increases, our current treatments are only effective at advanced levels of disease. Further, our screening methods to detect those needing treatment are currently not optimal. Early Events in Diabetic Retinopathy and Intervention Strategies covers topics addressing imaging processes currently available in the development of diabetic retinopathy screening. Potential biomarkers, that may be used to identify those at risk and illuminate the new pathways which lead to diabetic retinopathy, are expounded.

Abstract

Autoimmune bullous diseases are a group of rare skin diseases characterized by intraepidermal and subepidermal bullae formations due to autoantibodies directed against the structural proteins of the epidermis or the dermal-epidermal junction. Early and correct diagnosis and adequate treatment of autoimmune bullous diseases are important as they cause morbidity and mortality in the affected patients. This book, which gives detailed information about autoimmune bullous diseases, has two sections and nine chapters with sixteen contributing authors. The first section describes the structure and tasks of desmosomes and basement membrane zone, which consist of the major antigens of skin integrity targeted by autoantibodies. The second section is about the epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, mucocutaneous, histopathologic and laboratory findings, and therapy of autoimmune bullous diseases.

Abstract

This book focuses on metagenomics for gut microbiomes. The host is deprived of various benefits derived from the numerous gut microbes for food metabolism and health. However, polysaccharides such as cellulose, xylans, resistant starch, and inulin that are found in vegetables in our diet are digested by certain species that colonize the intestines. In contrast, metagenomic studies that reiterate microbiome intrinsic factors from particular communities and lifestyles and are extremely important for bacterial communities traveling over a long distance have entered a new era. Predominantly to understand the behavior of organisms and their action in a host, next-generation sequencing will provide a new insight into analyzing the livestock industry, agriculture, and human health risks and will consider for future development novel therapies for various diseases through identification of advanced tools. Hence, the book will give more precise information on the role of gut microbiomes in the host.

Abstract

Corticosteroids are mainly used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Corticosteroids will only be prescribed if the potential benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. They will also be prescribed at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. This book will strive to highlight the importance of corticosteroids, to focus on minimizing side effects, to monitor and sensitize the population on the potential adverse effects of misuse, to provide additional knowledge about the design and development of new drug delivery systems loaded with corticosteroids potentially useful in the treatment of chronic inflammatory-based diseases, and to reduce inflammation and affect the immune system. The major objective of this book will be to present the information in a lucid, condensed, and cohesive form and to specially cater to the needs of readers in medicine and pharmacy.

Abstract

Adipose tissue is a specialized connective tissue which, depending on type, plays different and significant roles in the human body: protects against environmental factors, stores lipids and triacylglycerol, synthesizes fatty acids and is involved in the process of thermogenesis. It is also a major secretory organ and highly active metabolic tissue. It secretes, for example, cholesterol, retinol, steroid hormones, prostaglandins and proteins known as ""adipokines"". Some of these molecules may be associated with pathologies such as obesity and insulin resistance. In humans, there are two main sites of adipose tissue accumulation: visceral and subcutaneous. Obesity is a worldwide health problem. This book also discusses a series of up-to-date topics about this pathology.

Abstract

For thousands of years, cataract surgery continues to be the ""pearl"" of ophthalmic surgery. It is explained by the fact that cataract removal always leads to an increase in visual acuity of patients. A new technology of cataract removal, phacoemulsification, was introduced by Charles Kelman in 1967. Despite this, it was difficult for the surgeons to transform from extracapsular cataract extraction to the new method - phacoemulsification. Recently, in the ophthalmological practice, the method of femtolaser cataract surgery (FLACS) has been introduced. This method allows you to automatically perform the basic stages of cataract surgery - corneal incisions, capsulorhexis, nucleus fracture. At the same time, to apply the various techniques of cataract surgery, the surgeon must possess virtually all the necessary techniques. This is dictated by the fact that, as a rule, cataract itself is rarely isolated - senile. Knowledge of the basic rules of cataract surgery, the use of pupillary rings and iris retractors in narrow pupils, the use of capsular rings in subluxations of the lens, the use of special modes of phaco in severe late cataracts, and a comprehensive clinical way of thinking can undoubtedly reduce the complications of cataract surgery.
