Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century, two revolutionary processes intersected in European industrialized societies. The sciences became a central force for interpreting the world, and the democratization of modern life became a key determinant of the political and cultural order. These processes turned Europe into a laboratory for very different interconnections between scientific self-observation and ideas about polity.

Abstract

The essays in this volume examine successful entrepreneurs from different industries and time periods. They show that at least in terms of Schumpeter`s model, entrepreneurship must be regarded as an individual quality, for no specific defining characteristic can be found, including social background, that suggests the existence of a specific ´entrepreneurial` type.

Abstract

The charges brought in an Inquisition case that revealed scandalous conditions in the Roman Catholic cloister of Sant Ambrogio between 1859 and 1862 included pretense of holiness and attempted murder. Possible motivations for the crimes included power struggles, jealousy, and a cover-up of sexual liaisons. Historians, theologians, religious scholars, and a psychiatrist shed a multifaceted light on the case.
