Abstract

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.6 million people will be diagnosed with cancer during this year. Outcomes have steadily risen over the last several decades with the advent of newer therapies. As outcomes have improved, more and more cancer patients are developing critical illness. In the not-too-distant past, patients with active malignancy were thought not appropriate for critical care services as decreased longevity related to the cancer suggested poor prognosis for intensive care utilization. More recently, evidence supports rapid activation of critical care services leading to improved outcomes in cancer patients. Moreover, just as sub-subspecialty critical care experience in trauma and neurosciences has proved beneficial, the emerging field of oncology critical care warrants specific attention.

Abstract

The book entitled Sepsis will provide a great and up-to-date information in this field to students and researchers involved in sepsis research with its chapters targeting host-pathogen interaction at a metabolic level during sepsis pathogenesis, how age affects sepsis pathogenesis and its outcome in old-age population as compared to young population, sepsis-associated acute organ injury mainly targeting acute kidney injury in sepsis, and kallistatin as host-derived immunomodulatory mechanism during sepsis, along with developments in techniques required for early diagnosis of sepsis and sepsis-associated encephalitis, a devastating medical condition observed during severe sepsis. The book is written by experts in their fields associated with sepsis, a critical condition needing great medical attention.

Abstract

In an era of transition from “classic” Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to assisted device-CPR or hemodynamic driven CPR, this book, published by InTechOpen, highlights some interesting aspects of resuscitation. Divided in three sections, the research presented emphasizes the details of resuscitation in special circumstances to possible future applications in the field. The authors offer us not only a “vigorous” review of the current literature but also a research road map for further advancement.

Abstract

Shifting the performance of an invasive procedure from operating room or interventional lab to the ICU has advantages for both the patient and the doctor performing the procedure. The book is a guide to interventions that are commonly performed in the intensive care unit, without the need of an operating room. In the following chapters, the authors show that procedures like endotracheal intubation, videolaryngoscopy, pericardial puncture, lumbar puncture and percutaneous cholecystostomy, and intra-abdominal pressure monitoring can be safely performed outside the operating room, at the bed of the patient. All the chapters of the book are clinically orientated providing explanations and illustrations for invasive procedures. Practical recommendations are given in the book, accompanied by figures for techniques performed in critically ill patients. It will serve the experienced doctor who has not performed a procedure for a long time as well as the young doctors needing a practical assistance when facing a new patient.

Abstract

Mary Ellen Avery was the driving force behind the discipline of Neonatology. She fought against convention when she published her ground-breaking paper in 1959 showing that Hyaline Membrane Disease was caused by lung surfactant deficiency. Up until then it was thought to be an due to amniotic fluid aspiration, as suggested by Hoccheim in 1903. She encouraged her students to think out of the box, as long as we were studying ‘something that you couldn’t live without’. In addition to being a great clinician-researcher she was a mentor. The article is by her former students writing about their personal experiences under the tutelage of Mel Avery.

Abstract

The voluminous publication edits 203 such items covering all of the Austrian territories from the Late Middle Ages to the 19th century. Hospital rules, instructions for hospital staff, job descriptions, special rules as, for example, prayer orders and dietaries, but also inventories were meant to channel the way of life of inmates and staff. Each of the edited sources is accompanied by a survey on the history of the hospital and a comment contextualising the contents, which necessitated pioneering archival research in many cases where no serious scholarly treatment of the hospitals’ history was available.First volume: http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:799
