Historical-materialistic critique of common explanations of the social relationship to nature in capitalism brings to light idealistic, culturalistic and politicistic short-cuts. A critical theory of social nature relations based on Marx's major work Das Kapital shows that the laws of capitalist society necessarily lead to systematic destruction of nature. The capitalist mode of production is incompatible with sustainable development.

The volume brings together critical perspectives on digital transformations and the underlying mechanisms such as quantification, algorithmization and commercialization. The authors from media pedagogy, educational science, educational research and media studies problematize tendencies of economist and technological appropriation and describe resistant practices. All of them are specifically concerned with the question of the complex relationship of the subject to society, institutions and media - and the possibilities of its change.

Commons - the world belongs to us all! The never-ending global financial crisis shows: Market and state have failed. It is therefore not surprising that Commons, the idea of communal organization and use of common goods and resources, find strong support - not only since the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Elinor Ostrom. Commons are more important than ever. They are not based on the idea of scarcity, but draw from abundance. This volume with contributions by 90 international authors from science, politics, and society introduces a modern concept of Commons that radically questions classic assumptions in theories of economy and property, and outlines a different culture of coexistence.

The transformation of hospitals into companies is repeatedly negotiated as a consistent rationalization strategy. From a sociological perspective, on the other hand, it becomes clear that the much-discussed ¼-economization½ of hospitals is a contradictory process. Robin Mohan traces the history of the hospital through a social theory of economization based on Marx, Weber and Bourdieu, which raises the contradiction between utility value and exchange value as the connecting leitmotiv. The analysis is supplemented by a sociology of labor study, which reconstructs how the economization processes are viewed from the point of view of the nursing staff.

The logic of capitalism is that of dividing and sharing. Only that in capitalism, people do not share, but rather, they themselves are divided up. For this reason, the British historian E.P. Thompson claims that »it was always a problem to explain the commons with capitalist categories«. Whoever enters into the world of the commons encounters another logic, another language and other categories. In this volume, authors from all continents investigate the anthropological foundations of the commons, and propose them at the same time as concrete utopias (E. Bloch). They make it possible to understand that everything is, or can become, commons: through processes of shared responsibility, in laboratories for self-organization and through freedom in solidarity. Commoners realize that which is already possible today, and will become obvious tomorrow. This is shown by over 40 examples from across the world. This book expands our notions of the possible when it comes to the organization of economics and society. With contributions by Nigel Gibson, Marianne Gronemeyer, Helmut Leitner, Etienne Le Roy, Andreas Weber, Rosa Luxemburg, Anne Salmond, David Sloan Wilson and more.

Time and again one reads that manufacturers deliberately design their products in such a way that they break prematurely. The victims: the customers. Many manufacturers, however, want to delay the wear. How do you go about planning for obsolescence? The book presents for the first time the view and experiences of those who develop, design and manufacture products. The contributions deal with reparability as a business model, product lifecycle management, obsolescence as a management topic, the role of state influence and the social drivers of the short-lived consumer goods.
