Abstract

Abstract

The current political discourse on the "further development and control of child and youth welfare" attempts to discredit and repress outpatient help for upbringing. The present "plea" interferes professionally and politically in this debate. The authors provide a critical assessment of the current situation of child and youth welfare and in particular of educational assistance and trace the process of the debate on the "further development and control of educational assistance". On the basis of detailed description and analysis of the two basic approaches to action in social work (social work in and with the social space on the one hand and individual casework, e.g. educational assistance, on the other), it deals with the question of whether the controversy alleged by politicians between the two approaches to action is technically justified. In this context, the two approaches to action are presented in their history and development and in their different conceptions. In addition to a clear plea for the preservation and consistently professional design of educational assistance in the context of life-world orientation, this also leads to the realisation that social work in general - and especially in times of neo-liberalisation of the social - is subject to the risk of individualisation. On the other hand, within both approaches it is also possible today to fend off this tendency and to act as a critical force in this society. In addition to the technical, ideological and political examination of the new control intentions of politics vis-à-vis aid for education, this book contains detailed descriptions and discussions on various individual topics, among others: - Technical characteristics, action orientations and process design of the action approaches "Outpatient individual case assistance" and "Work in and with the social space" (8.4 and 9.3, 9.4) - What shares does social work itself have in its partly unprofessional state? (Section 4.4) - Presentation and discussion of the concept of "social space orientation" (8.5) - Individualisation: What is this? How can it be avoided? (Chapter 8)

Abstract

This handbook is based on the project "Österreichische Kinder- und Jugendbuchautorinnen" (Austrian WomenWriters of children's literature), which was defined as part of the project "biografiA. datenbank und lexikonösterreichischer frauen" (database of austrian women, http://www.biografia.at), localised on the Institute forScience and Art in Vienna. In the years 1999 to 2002 more than 800 women writers could be describedbiographically. Among them are many women, who wrote only one single book for children, there are someillustrators who decided to write also the text for their books and there are also some wellknown writers forChildren's books, like Christine Nöstlinger, Renate Welsh, Friederike Mayröcker and many others. There ist notime-limitation, so we have a good overlook of the whole production of children's literature in Austria. Austriameans by that way to be born in this land or to live here for more than 10 years. Many of the living authors sendt their curriculum vitae and also many experts on this field helped to fill up theentries. But there are great differences between the portraits of the women, differences in the length of the articles,in the presenting details of the lifes and also differences in their way to live, in their political behaviour and so on.Many of the authors had to flee from austria during the time of nationalsocialism because of their jewish origin ortheir political background. Some of them are nearly forgotten. They were murdered or had to emigrate in a landwith another language, the chance to be able to continue the writing career was very small. But we know somewomen who had the luck to continue the career. Alex Wedding is one of them, she founded with some otherwriters like Auguste Lazar the proletarian children's literature. Hertha Pauli is one of the women whose careerbegan in her exile, she began to write books for children in the USA. The biographs can be read as a part ofaustrian culture, as a piece of our own history. It is the intention of this handbook to encourage scientists to study more about the austrian women-writers ofchildren's books and to discuss their publications.

Abstract

A reliable diagnosis of the state of motor development requires objective and reliable test procedures. As part of the MoMo Baseline Study, the motor fitness of 4529 children and adolescents in Germany was evaluated by using the MoMo Performance Test (11 motor and computer based tests). The data obtained served as a basis for the compilation of nationwide representative standard values. By using these values, it is possible to classify the state of motor fitness and follow its development.

Abstract

This edited volume provides a comparative analysis of the history of borderland children during the 20th Century. More than their parents, children were envisioned to play a crucial role in bringing about a peaceful Europe. The contributions show the complexity of nationalisation within various spheres of borderland children´s lives and display the dichotomy between nationalist policies and manifest non-national practices of borderland children. Despite the different imaginations of East and West that had influenced peace negotiators after both World Wars, moreover, borderland children in Western and Central Europe invented practices that contributed to the creation of a socially cohesive Europe.
