Abstract

The increasing accessibility of sensors allows the study and development of multimodal learning tools that create opportunities for learners to practice while receiving feedback. One of the potential learning scenarios addressed by these learning applications is the development of public speaking skills. First applications and studies showed promising empirical results in laboratory conditions. In this article we present a study where we explored the use of a multimodal learning application called the Presentation Trainer, supporting learners with a real public speaking task in the classroom. The results of this study help to understand the challenges and implications of testing such a system in a real-world learning setting, and show the actual impact compared to the use in laboratory conditions.

Abstract

Books and articles on instructional design in online learning abound but rarely do we get such a comprehensive picture of what instructional designers do, how they do it, and the problems they solve as their university changes. Power documents the emergence of an adapted instructional design model for transforming courses from single-mode to dual-mode instruction, making this designer’s log a unique contribution to the fi eld of online learning.

Abstract

Alan Rogers looks at learning (formal, nonformal and informal) and examines the hidden world of informal (unconscious, unplanned) learning. He points out the importance of informal learning for creating tacit attitudes and values, knowledge and skills which influence (conscious, planned) learning – formal and non-formal. Moreover, he explores the implications of informal learning for educational planners and teachers in the context of lifelong learning. While mainly aimed at adult educators, the book’s arguments apply also to schooling and higher education, in both industrialised societies and developing countries where large numbers of children and adults are not and have not been in school and so rely on informal learning to manage change.

Abstract

Flexibility has become a watchword in modern education, but its implementation is by no means a straightforward matter. Flexible Pedagogy, Flexible Practice sheds light on the often taken-for-granted assumptions that inform daily practice and examines the institutional dynamics that help and hinder efforts towards flexibility. The collection is international in scope, drawing on the experience of specialists in distance education from North America, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, and Japan. Contributors to the volume were asked to reflect candidly and critically on questions that include: •What precisely is flexible learning? •Who or what is driving the flexibility agenda, and for whose benefit? And •who or what is resisting it? •What challenges must be overcome in order to achieve flexibility, and what are some of the compromises it can entail? In addressing these and other issues, the authors offer a wealth of theoretical insights and a frank assessment of their practical experience. Their report from the trenches will be invaluable to anyone seeking to broaden the reach of higher education. “Essentially, the book is about what happens when the canonical concept collides with the ‘rough terrains of practice,’ and in addressing this question, it succeeds admirably. . . . And there’s more – much more – from the thirty-three contributors, in addition to the insightful ‘wrap-around’ provided by the editors. . . . Your thinking will be both challenged and informed.” —David Murphy (read the rest of the review at David Murphy’s Occasional Blog)
