Abstract

"Research on coaching in sports has long been concerned with how coaches interact&#xD;with their players. In recent years, more research in sports psychology has been conducted on&#xD;the coach’s role. However, research on coaches’ co-operation with leaders and staff in the clubs&#xD;has received little attention. There is reason to argue that the way coaches handle this part of&#xD;their profession can have a huge impact on how well they are able to do their job. This study&#xD;explores how three experienced Norwegian elite football coaches (average 25 years of elite&#xD;experience) interact with others in their clubs creating room for themselves and achieving their goals through micro-political activity and orchestration, i.e. coaches’ actions to increase&#xD;their own influence and power within the organization. We collected data through semi-structured&#xD;interviews. Then we used content analysis based on a theoretical framework consisting&#xD;of the orchestration metaphor and studies on micropolitics and the three aspects of micropolitical&#xD;proficiency. The results and discussion describe how the coaches handle the negotiation&#xD;process before joining a club, how they handle managers and employees, and how they have&#xD;developed their micropolitical skills through their careers. Their knowledge about and attention&#xD;to these processes were integral parts of their coaching and leadership challenges. Knowledge&#xD;of orchestration and micropolitics seemed to be important for the coaches in the current&#xD;study. We therefore provide some suggestions as to how coaches can improve their ability to&#xD;handle these elements in coach education and suggest possible future research and applied&#xD;implications for coaches."&#xD;

Abstract

For cost reasons braille displays used by the visually impaired to access digital data through the sense of touch are limited to displaying one line of text. However, by using cost effective microfluidic actuators it is possible to manufacture large-scale braille displays. This work describes the working principle and the manufacturing techniques used for fabricating components of such a display and the results of an online survey revealing the user requirements regarding braille displays.

Abstract

Size effects are widely observed in the mechanics of materials at the micron scale. However, the underlying deformation mechanisms remain ambiguous, particularly in the presence of strain gradients. In this work, combined microstructural investigations and mechanical tests (tension and torsion) were conducted on polycrystalline gold micro wires to determine the influences of specimen size, grain size, strain rate and loading type on the deformation behavior of the wires.

Abstract

This Special Issue cooperates with the 5th Asian Symposium on Emulsion Polymerization and Functional Polymeric Microspheres (ASEPFPM 2015) (http://asepfpm5.csp.escience.cn). Polymeric microspheres are basic materials for recent progress in environmental science, architecture, biomedicine, electronics, food, cosmetics, etc. While much progress has been made over the past few decades, there are still big challenges for the preparation of functional particles and the verification of preparation mechanisms; there is much room for growth in our ability to provide for high performance in these areas. The general theme of this symposium is to discuss recent advances in both fundamentals and applications, as well as to promote science and industrialization translation.

Abstract

Since the concept of micro total analysis systems (µ-TAS) has been advocated, various kinds of micro/nano devices have been developed by researchers in many fields, such as in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electric engineering, biology, and medicine, among others. The analytical techniques for small sample volumes, using the micro/nano devices, heavily impacted the fields of biology, medicine and biotechnology, as well as analytical chemistry. Some applications (DNA analysis, point-of-care testing (POCT), etc.) are already commercially available, and various applications will soon be put into practical use.In this Special Issue, we focus on chemical and biochemical analyses (analytical and sensing techniques) using the various types of the micro/nano devices, including micro/nanofluidic devices, paper-based devices, digital microfluidics, and biochip (DNA, protein, cell) arrays. We are also interested in hyphenated devices with other conventional analytical instruments, and the pretreatment devices and components (valve, pump, etc.) for analysis/assay.

Abstract

Development of powerful new high- throughput technologies for probing the transcriptome, proteome and metabolome is driving the rapid acquisition of information on the function of molecular systems. The importance of these achievements cannot be understated - they have transformed the nature of both biology and medicine. Despite this dramatic progress, one of the greatest challenges that continues to confront modern biology is to understand how behavior at the level of genome, proteome and metabolome determines physiological function at the level of cell, tissue and organ in both health and disease. Because of the inherent complexity of biological systems, the development, analysis, and validation of integrative computational models based directly on experimental data is necessary to achieve this understanding. This approach, known as systems biology, integrates computational and experimental approaches through iterative development of mathematical models and experimental validation and testing. The combination of these approaches allows for a mechanistic understanding of the function of complex biological systems in health and their dysfunction in disease. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has recognized the importance of the systems biology approach for understanding normal physiology and perturbations associated with heart, lung, blood, and sleep diseases and disorders. In 2006, NHLBI announced the Exploratory Program in Systems Biology, followed in 2010 by the NHLBI Systems Biology Collaborations. The goal of these programs is to support collaborative teams of investigators in using experimental and computational strategies to integrate the component parts of biological networks and pathways into computational models that are based firmly on and validated using experimental data. These validated models are then applied to gain insights into the mechanisms of altered system function in disease, to generate novel hypotheses regarding these mechanisms that can be tested experimentally, and to then use the results of experiments to refine the models. The purpose of this Research Topic is to present the range of innovative, new approaches being developed by investigators working in areas of systems biology that couple experimental and modeling studies to understand the cause and possible treatment of heart, lung, blood and sleep diseases and disorders. This Research Topic will be of great interest to the cardiovascular research community as well as to the general community of systems biologists.

Abstract

Advances in next generation sequencing technologies, omics, and bioinformatics are revealing a tremendous and unsuspected diversity of microbes, both at a compositional and functional level. Moreover, the expansion of ecological concepts into microbial ecology has greatly advanced our comprehension of the role microbes play in the functioning of ecosystems across a wide range of biomes. Super-imposed on this new information about microbes, their functions and how they are organized, environmental gradients are changing rapidly, largely driven by direct and indirect human activities. In the context of global change, understanding the mechanisms that shape microbial communities is pivotal to predict microbial responses to novel selective forces and their implications at the local as well as global scale. One of the main features of microbial communities is their ability to react to changes in the environment. Thus, many studies have reported changes in the performance and composition of communities along environmental gradients. However, the mechanisms underlying these responses remain unclear. It is assumed that the response of microbes to changes in the environment is mediated by a complex combination of shifts in the physiological properties, single-cell activities, or composition of communities: it may occur by means of physiological adjustments of the taxa present in a community or selecting towards more tolerant/better adapted phylotypes. Knowing whether certain factors trigger one, many, or all mechanisms would greatly increase confidence in predictions of future microbial composition and processes. This Research Topic brings together studies that applied the latest molecular techniques for studying microbial composition and functioning and integrated ecological, biogeochemical and/or modeling approaches to provide a comprehensive and mechanistic perspective of the responses of micro-organisms to environmental changes. This Research Topic presents new findings on environmental parameters influencing microbial communities, the type and magnitude of response and differences in the response among microbial groups, and which collectively deepen our current understanding and knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of microbial structural and functional responses to environmental changes and gradients in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The body of work has, furthermore, identified many challenges and questions that yet remain to be addressed and new perspectives to follow up on.

Abstract

"Micro-progettazione" ("micro-planning") are the processes carried out by the teacher to prepare the day after work session. Three models are analyzed and compared in the book: Propit, EAS and Flipped Classroom. Although each one has its own features, all of these models share the attention to micro-planning, the focusing on action and the interest in promoting an active and conscious attitude of the students.

Abstract

Micro/nanofluidic chips have found increasing applications in the analysis of chemical and biological samples over the past two decades. Electrokinetics has become the method of choice in these micro/nano-chips for transporting, manipulating and sensing ions, (bio)molecules, fluids and (bio)particles, etc., due to the high maneuverability, scalability, sensitivity, and integrability. The involved phenomena, which cover electroosmosis, electrophoresis, dielectrophoresis, electrohydrodynamics, electrothermal flow, diffusioosmosis, diffusiophoresis, streaming potential, current, etc., arise from either the inherent or the induced surface charge on the solid-liquid interface under DC and/or AC electric fields. To review the state-of-the-art of micro/nanochip electrokinetics, we welcome, in this Special Issue of Micromachines, all original research or review articles on the fundamentals and applications of the variety of electrokinetic phenomena in both microfluidic and nanofluidic devices.
