Abstract

In 1994, after following a character in Peter Handke’s novel Repetition into what is now Slovenia and after traveling in landscapes of Handke’s youth, Žarko Radaković and Scott Abbott published a two-headed text in Belgrade, Ponavljane, now published in English by punctum as Repetitions. The possibility of narration in two voices, complicated by the third voice that is Peter Handke’s own narrator, is the main focus of deliberation while traveling and reading and writing. Repetitions begins with Abbott’s text, a fairly straightforward travel narrative. It ends with Radaković’s account of the same events, much less straightforward, more repetitious, more adventuresome. Two aspects make the double-book unique. First, it represents experiences shared by two authors whose native languages are Serbian and English respectively (German is their only common language). The authors’ perspectives contrast with and supplement one another: Radaković grew up in Tito’s Yugoslavia and Abbott comes from the Mormon American West; Radaković is the translator of most of Peter Handke’s works into Serbo-Croatian and Abbott translated Handke’s provocative A Journey to the Rivers: Justice for Serbia for Viking Press and his play Voyage by Dugout: The Play of the Film of the War for PAJ (Performing Arts Journal); Radaković was a journalist for Deutsche Welle in Cologne and Abbott is a professor of German literature at Utah Valley University; Radaković is the author of several novels and Abbott has published mostly literary-critical work; and so on. Two sets of eyes. Two pens. Two visions of the world.

Abstract

In the ‘broad church’ of the Australian Liberal Party, rarely has there been a maverick so unrelenting in his commitment to personal principles as Senator Peter Baume. Over a parliamentary career spanning 17 years, three ministerial portfolios and five party leaders, Baume was increasingly pitted against his own party room. In A Dissident Liberal: The Political Writings of Peter Baume, we learn of personal threats, crises, constitutional confrontation and the tension between conservatism and classical liberalism—and between ideology and toeing the party line. This collection of personal observations, speeches and commentaries on contentious policy issues presents a valuable resource for students of Australian political history.

Abstract

Peter Borowsky (1938-2000) was a committed historian and enthusiastic historian. For more than 30 years he taught modern history at the History Department of the University of Hamburg. He left a lasting mark on generations of students through his competence and his way of conveying history in a lively way. This is also evident in the 14 contributions to German history in the 19th and 20th centuries, which are published here for the first time. The topics range from the Hohenzollern region to the political culture of the Federal Republic of Germany and include students in the revolution of 1848, Hamburg's 19th century history, the development from the Weimar Republic to the "Third Reich", German relations with Eastern European countries and the USA. Two texts deal vividly with the history of German historiography and the "Historian's Dispute".

Abstract

The book explores the modern attitudes that are articulated in the texts "Third Walpurgis Night" (1933) by Karl Kraus and "Prodromos" (1905) by Peter Altenberg. Following Foucault's discourse analytical approach and his concept of self practice, it asks with what types of subject and truth the two literary works break open the structures of enunciation in which they are historically embedded. The result is not a biographical or philological comparison, but a report on the experience of a performative reading that makes an archaeological section of the writings and reconstructs their genealogical line.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the reception of Eduard Hanslick in Anglo-american discourse from its earliest instances in the 19th century up to analytical philosophy of music. This book thus analyzes primarily the discoursive conditions of Hanslick’s reception, which developed distinctly as part of different academic disciplines (history of art, musicology, philosophy of music). Moreover, this study explores the function Hanslick’s argument attained in modern debates of New Musicology and Anglo-american aesthetics, which cast new light upon the interpretation of Hanslick’s stances on the relation between emotion and music.
