Abstract

“There will be no peace between nations without peace between religions. There will be no peace between religions without dialogue between religions. There will be no dialogue between religions without global ethical criteria. There will be no survival for our world with peace and justice without a new paradigm of international relations based on global ethical standards.” In the light of this declaration, made by the famous theologian Hans Küng in the General Assembly of the United Nations in November 2001 (in the line of the “Declaration of a World Ethics” approved in 1993 by a Parliament of World Religions which brought together in Chicago over 200 representatives of all the religions of the world), Coimbra University Press invited a group of specialists to meet in November 2010 to discuss the premises and current conditions for inter-religious dialogue. The initiative, which brought together representatives and scholars of the prophetic religions (the three great Abrahamic religions or ‘religions of the book’: Judaism, Christianity and Islam) and the mystical religions, aroused a great deal of interest, which proves the urgency of this discussion in the present world. This volume serves as the memory of that event and also aims to be a contribution and a motivation for other similar initiatives.

Abstract

This book contains a set of different works unified by a common theme and by a common analysis approach: historical linguistics and the processes of linguistic change and standardisation. The volume combines two types of contributions, providing contact with research directions and research projects being conducted in different parts of the world. Some texts discuss theoretical and methodological subjects currently considered in linguistic studies, particularly in the field of historical linguistics. Other chapters aim to study the change of linguistic structures and linguistic usages. In these cases, detailed analysis of empirical and diversified data is provided. Finally, some contributions of this volume take codificatory work over Portuguese as corpus. Such data supports research on the knowledge of the ancient language and provides the researcher with relevant elements for the comprehension and clarification of the standardisation processes, a phenomenon that usually accompanies the elaboration of languages.

Abstract

Identity is constructed through the interaction between the ‘I’ and the numerous ‘others’ that constitute its world. From this plurivocal dialogue results a diversity of ways of acting and thinking, responsible not only for the creation of norms but also for passing beyond the transmitted code, that is, for transgression. It is the constant updating of this dynamic correlation between norm and transgression that gives rise to progress (moving forwards) of the ‘I’, both individual and collective. In it lies the very nature of creative activity, the fascination for discovery, the impulse and need for revolution.

Abstract

Abstract

Education has always been a determining factor in the life of men and societies, but it has today acquired enormous relevance, becoming one of the great themes of the moment with importance not only for the present but also for the future.ALT_QUEBRA_LINHAMany different academic subjects contribute to education, ranging from the social and human sciences to the empirical sciences, while the social, cultural, spiritual and moral fund represented by education continues to flow incessantly like a deep river which, despite the winds and turbulence that agitate and perturb its surface. The problems that concern education today, like scientific information and empirical research which can clarify it, cannot dispense with theoretical analyses to arrive at new forms of understanding that are as complex as they are problematic and difficult as are the educational subjects.ALT_QUEBRA_LINHAThis book brings together multiple perspectives on education by professors and researchers from Portugal and Spain in the domain of theory and philosophy of education. Bringing together representatives of 22 universities in the Iberian Peninsula, these studies reflect a multiplicity of theoretical approaches to education, giving a global view of what is thought in the geographical and cultural context of Western Europe. It is, therefore an excellent occasion to deepen our knowledge of these subjects and look at them from innovative and fertile perspectives.

Abstract

This homage to Maria Augusta Barbosa on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth explores the classical style in the broader, though not diffuse, sense of the term with a series of previously unpublished accounts both by and about this unrivalled figure from the world of Portuguese musicology. The authors, all of whom were related to her in some way through their studies, her teaching or simply friendship, affirm her significance through their important contributions to matters that were included in her teaching, such as themes from classical theory, along with music history, analysis and practice, within the relationship between music, the arts and philosophy. This work opens up new possibilities for the academic exploration of the classical in music, with important names such as Gerhard Doderer, Klaus Niemöller, Gil Miranda, Mário Vieira de Carvalho, Salwa Castelo Branco, Vítor Serrão, and others.
