Abstract

In the higher power range, three-phase inductive power transfer is an auspicious option to supply electric vehicles for local public transport. Decreases in efficiency and power transfer capability caused among others by positional misalignment and temperature cannot be completely avoided during operation. An automatic retuning of the system directly faces the remaining effects of these disturbing ascendancies and ensures continuous operation in the optimal operating point.

Abstract

Reports on a new generation of Internet controls that establish a new normative terrain in which surveillance and censorship are routine.Internet filtering, censorship of Web content, and online surveillance are increasing in scale, scope, and sophistication around the world, in democratic countries as well as in authoritarian states. The first generation of Internet controls consisted largely of building firewalls at key Internet gateways; China's famous “Great Firewall of China” is one of the first national Internet filtering systems. Today the new tools for Internet controls that are emerging go beyond mere denial of information. These new techniques, which aim to normalize (or even legalize) Internet control, include targeted viruses and the strategically timed deployment of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, surveillance at key points of the Internet's infrastructure, take-down notices, stringent terms of usage policies, and national information shaping strategies. Access Controlled reports on this new normative terrain. The book, a project from the OpenNet Initiative (ONI), a collaboration of the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto's Munk Centre for International Studies, Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and the SecDev Group, offers six substantial chapters that analyze Internet control in both Western and Eastern Europe and a section of shorter regional reports and country profiles drawn from material gathered by the ONI around the world through a combination of technical interrogation and field research methods.

Abstract

Abstract

M. Michaela Hampf analyzes American history from the end of the Civil War to the epochal year 1898. She argues that the rise of the United States to become an imperial power had already begun in the years following 1865. The study takes new methodical approaches to explain America’s special path, drawing upon the theory of path-dependency.

Abstract

A long-serving leader of the Christian Democratic Party from mid-1940s to late 1950s, Fiorentino Sullo led an intense political action in the province of Avellino, combining exercise of power and political planning, programmatic appeals and rational distribution of resources, political and administrative management of State’s intervention in the public sphere and its bodies, efficient control and modernization of the territory. For over fifteen years, he intended to address and solve the typical dilemma faced by every modernizing elite and posed by the clash between the poles of conservation and transformation. His political career was characterized by a deep understanding of the traditional traits of the local communities, persistent and inevitable in the development of the relationship between politics and society. He also highlighted, in his activities, a strong orientation towards political change and the socio-economic development of a backward periphery.

Abstract

Between 2009 and 2013 Cymene Howe and Dominic Boyer conducted fieldwork in Mexico's Isthmus of Tehuantepec to examine the political, social, and ecological dimensions of moving from fossil fuels to wind power. Their work manifested itself as a new ethnographic form: the duograph—a combination of two single-authored books that draw on shared fieldsites, archives, and encounters that can be productively read together, yet can also stand alone in their analytic ambitions. In his volume, Energopolitics, Boyer examines the politics of wind power and how it is shaped by myriad factors, from the legacies of settler colonialism and indigenous resistance to state bureaucracy and corporate investment. Drawing on interviews with activists, campesinos, engineers, bureaucrats, politicians, and bankers, Boyer outlines the fundamental impact of energy and fuel on political power. Boyer also demonstrates how large conceptual frameworks cannot adequately explain the fraught and uniquely complicated conditions on the isthmus, illustrating the need to resist narratives of anthropocenic universalism and to attend to local particularities.

Abstract

Abstract

This open access book comprises 10 high-level papers on research and innovation within the Flexitranstore Project that were presented at the FLEXITRANSTORE special session organized as part of the 21st International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering. FLEXITRANSTORE (An Integrated Platform for Increased FLEXIbility in smart TRANSmission grids with STORage Entities and large penetration of Renewable Energy Sources) aims to contribute to the development of a pan-European transmission network with high flexibility and high interconnection levels. This will facilitate the transformation of the current energy production mix by hosting an increasing share of renewable energy sources. Novel smart grid technologies, control and storage methods, and new market approaches will be developed, installed, demonstrated, and tested introducing flexibility to the European power system. FLEXITRANSTORE is developing a next-generation Flexible Energy Grid (FEG) that will be integrated into the European Internal Energy Market (IEM) through the valorization of flexibility services. This FEG addresses the capabilities of a power system to maintain continuous service in the face of rapid and large swings in supply or demand. As such, a wholesale market infrastructure and new business models within this integrated FEG must be upgraded for network players, and offer incentives for new ones to join, while at the same time demonstrating new business perspectives for cross-border resource management and energy trading.

Abstract

Electrical power and energy systems are at the forefront of application developments in renewable energy, smart grids, electric aircrafts, electric and hybrid vehicles and much more. The associated technologies and control methods are crucial to achieving global targets in energy efficiency and low-carbon operations, and will also contribute to key areas such as energy security. The greatest challenges occur when we combine new technologies at large-scale and often complex system level. The Special Edition will cover theoretical developments with special emphasis on applications in electrical power and energy systems. Topics covered include:Renewable Energy Systems: Energy management; hybrid systems; distributed systems; renewable sources and integration; transient energy storage, charging networks.Electrical Machines, Drives and Applications: AC and DC machines and drives; multiscale systems modeling; remote monitoring and diagnosis; electric and hybrid vehicles; energy conversion, vehicle to grid interaction.Power Electronic Systems: Converters and emerging technologies; modeling simulation and control; power factor correction; power supplies; active filters; reliability and fault tolerance.Electrical Power Generation Systems: Modeling and simulation of electrical power systems; load management; power quality; distribution reliability; distributed and islanded power systems, sensor networks, communication and control.Electrical Power Systems Modeling and Control: Modeling and control methodologies and applications; intelligent systems; optimization and advanced heuristics; adaptive systems; robust control.
