Abstract

This empirical study draws a portrait of modern entrepreneurial families - a social unit that has received little attention in scientific discourse so far. The terms life course, biography and everyday life are the guiding concepts of this study. Thus, in contrast to system-theoretical perspectives, the "whole life" of entrepreneurial families is to be taken into account.

Abstract

Using virtue as an example, the study provides an insight into the normative and subjective orientations of young people in their everyday school context. The concept of virtue in previous educational debates is juxtaposed with a perspective that incorporates the students' point of view: In contrast to the normatively used concept of virtue, the present findings present virtue of honesty as an ambivalent behavior that is situation-, context- and person-dependent. Since ancient Greece, virtues have been a central theme of pedagogy. Educational philosophers have repeatedly developed catalogues of virtues which they assumed could guide practical education. The present work asks how young people adapt to educational demands and undermine them to their own advantage. The question is pursued using the example of school-relevant virtue honesty by interviewing 16 young people in the school context using problem-centred interviews. The results of the study refer to explicit and implicit rules of honesty, which can be divided into conventional and unconventional rules.

Abstract

This book analyses the challenges of secrecy in security research, and develops a set of methods to navigate, encircle and work with secrecy. How can researchers navigate secrecy in their fieldwork, when they encounter confidential material, closed-off quarters or bureaucratic rebuffs? This is a particular challenge for researchers in the security field, which is by nature secretive and difficult to access. This book creatively assesses and analyses the ways in which secrecies operate in security research. The collection sets out new understandings of secrecy, and shows how secrecy itself can be made productive to research analysis. It offers students, PhD researchers and senior scholars a rich toolkit of methods and best-practice examples for ethically appropriate ways of navigating secrecy. It pays attention to the balance between confidentiality, and academic freedom and integrity. The chapters draw on the rich qualitative fieldwork experiences of the contributors, who did research at a diversity of sites, for example at a former atomic weapons research facility, inside deportation units, in conflict zones, in everyday security landscapes, in virtual spaces, and at borders, bureaucracies and banks. The book will be of interest to students of research methods, critical security studies and International Relations in general.

Abstract

This book employs a range of approaches to answer the question of how to use qualitative methods in a way that opens for reflections on the development and the study of professional practice in teacher education. Knowledge is displayed in action. Since this is also true for professional practice, the methods used by the contributors to this book are oriented towards practical action in the field of education, from early childhood education to higher education. Development, reflection, learning and research are tightly interwoven, as is displayed by researchers, teachers, and students when they participate and reflect upon different kinds of learning processes. The book is dealt in three parts, all of which examine reflection in relation to the fundamental terms method, research, and learning. The first part discusses method in a field of tension between everyday practice, research, and learning. The second part focuses on reflection in different areas of university students practicum during their education. The third and final part highlights the different ways in which processes of reflection are relevant in the context of classroom studies. All contributors to Method between research and learning – Reflection in practice are members of the interdisciplinary research group Qualitative methods in professional practice at University College of Southeast Norway.

Abstract

Rassismus in der Mitte der Gesellschaft kann weder durch die herkömmlichen Analysen zu Jugendgewalt und individuumszentrierte Deutungen noch durch ein Rassismusverständnis, das sich definitorisch am deutschen Nationalsozialismus orientiert, hinreichend verstanden werden. Die Autorin untersucht ihn dagegen als gesamtgesellschaftliches und in seinen Erscheinungsformen variables Phänomen. Die Studie verbindet Rassismuskonzepte (Hall, Miles, Balibar) mit Bourdieus Theorie sozialer Ungleichheit zu einem Analysemodell des Rassismus als flexibler symbolischer Ressource. Der empirische Teil zeigt an Gruppendiskussionen mit Akademikern und Facharbeitern, wie diese Ressource in Form spezifischer Argumentationsfiguren kommuniziert wird.
