Abstract

2014 and 2016, marked by the 450th anniversary of his birthday and the 400th anniversary of his demise respectively, have both been dedicated to the remembrance of William Shakespeare and the celebration of his work through readings, theater productions, movies, exhibitions, and many academic events. He is fondly called the “Bard” by many and has long been England's export hit. Shakespeare gained lasting fame and fortune during his lifetime not only by successfully moving his audience, but also because from the beginning his work inspired critical and artistic dialogue. The ingenuity and uniqueness of his work did not fail to inspire the creative imagination of successive generations of authors, artists, and musicians over the past four and a half centuries. In fact, each generation has reimagined and recreated Shakespeare in its own different way, bringing its own interpretation, themes, fashion, taste, and customs to the rereading, visualization, and intonation of his work. The brand “Shakespeare” is still as popular and productive as ever. A fact that is apparent not only in the huge numbers of visitors yearly to Stratford upon Avon and Verona, the city of Shakespeare's tragic-romance Romeo and Juliet, but also in the long line of movies produced based on his plays each year. One might even go as far as to assert that it is the generations of productive readers and their own unique creative interpretations that have kept the Bard alive over the past 450 years. This collection of essays celebrates Shakespeare’s two big anniversaries and takes the opportunity to look at him from a different perspective, as a source of inspiration and, for a change, to explore the eclectic results of centuries of productive reception of his work from the Elizabethan era up to the 21rst century.

Abstract

Abstract

At the occasion of Paul Ricoeur’s centenary, this volume gathered a tribute of several scholars, young researchers, and Ph.D students around the main themes that marked the reception of this philosopher’s work in Portugal and, especially, in the University of Coimbra. Each chapter demonstrates the vigour of Ricoeur’s thought in its many dimensions: its rootedness in the "reflexive tradition" of philosophy, its "existentialist" horizon, and its articulation of Phenomenology and Hermeneutics. This philosophical project has, today, an enormous range of influence. It is a project that promotes dialogue between disciplines, authors, and cultures, overcoming theoretical divisions in order to face the demands of praxis. From this rich and plural inspiration comes the ability to meet with other fields of thought, namely psychotherapy, history, neuroscience, bioethics, social sciences, and literary studies.

Abstract

This volume seeks to explore new interpretive approaches to textual sources from past cultures that emphasize their materiality and praxeology. The focus of inquiry is on the relationship between the text and its material carriers and on the influence of material forms on the creation, presence, and reception of what is written.

Abstract

Abstract

L’Allusion et L’Accès follows on from work previously published in GRAAT, in particular Usure et Rupture – Breaking Points (GRAAT 13) and Fonctions du Cliché – Du Banal à la Violence (GRAAT 16). The present conference aimed to articulate the strategies that the literary text deploys to access the unsayable, whilst, simultaneously, keeping in mind the notion of play contained in the etymology of allusion: alludere. Allusion and Access, then, are two vast subjects put into juxtaposition and pe...

Abstract

Abstract

The book brings together seven essays on Cicero written by specialists in the Author. The essays are grouped into two sections: in the first one, papers on Cicero’s works (the dialogues: Lucullus, De finibus, De oratore, De officiis); in the second one, papers on both the early and late reception of Cicero (in Seneca, Petrarch and Erasmus). The essays belong to professors from Brazilian (Adriano Scatolin, Bianca Fanelli Morganti, Elaine Cristine Sartorelli, Sidney Calheiros de Lima), French (Carlos Lévy) and Italian universities (Aldo Setaioli, Ermanno Malaspina). The book avoids biographical approach, which sometimes takes the works of Cicero as a reliable witness of political and family events, sometimes distrusts them as a distorted picture of public and private actors; or yet, conceives of them as either the Author’s profession of faith in a philosophical doctrine, or a tendentious presentation of the theses of philosophical schools. Instead, the essays adopt another interpretative key, so that, when analyzing a philosophical dialogue of Cicero, instead of seeking references to its historical moment, focus on its controversial aspects (due to the dispute between the schools of philosophy), rhetorical aspects (the amplifying devices through which the Author compares the strength of one thesis with the weakness of another), fictional aspects (including the description of the scene and the picture of the characters). Thus, it can be said that the book seeks a more appropriate approach to Cicero’s works, not taking them as mere source of historical knowledge, but considering their historicity, that is, the devices for discursive production of their own time.

Abstract

This book is organized into two parts, the first one focused specifically on the Plutarchian Corpus as a source for the study of art and iconography (sculpture, painting, and numismatics), the second one on the Life of Alexanderand its reception in Western art (painting, tapestry and cinema). It brings together seven studies by Spanish and Portuguese researchers, along with an introductory text. Based on different perspectives of analysis and up-to-date bibliography, though focused in the work of Plutarch, this volume is also a contribution to research in the field of Classical Art and Reception Studies.

Abstract

These two volumes collect several studies about Greek and Latin theatre (I) and its reception (II). From An-tiquity, beside the analysis of specific texts, are considered aspects related with the evolution of the tragic and comic genres, their agents and their civic function. The reception studies (II) put together collaborators from a large geography and include a big number of case studies, mainly considering literature and theatre from the latin and iberoamerican world.
