Abstract

In March 2014, the e-mail
list of the European Academic Network on Romani
Studies1 hosted a discussion on definitions of the population known as ‘Roma’.
It began when one of the subscribers to the list – which at the time brought
together some 350 academics who specialised in Romani/Gypsy studies – asked
for reactions to two generalisations which she came across while preparing a
legal review of a document on cultural rights: (1) that all Roma speak a variety
of the same language, Romanes; and (2) that Roma generally consider themselves
to be a nation. Some two-dozen
scholars posted their reactions, which
together offer a fairly exhaustive summary of contemporary views on the subject

Abstract

Romani political mobilisation is now an established part of the civil society landscape
across Europe. It has given rise to various forms of political participation,
with Romani NGOs taking up consultative roles in a number of countries, as
well as in inter-governmental
organisations. Models of direct political representation
of Roma through a kind of quota system exist at the level of local government
in Hungary and in the national elections in Romania, and a number of
parliamentarians of Romani background have held direct mandates in national
legislatives and in the European Parliament

Abstract

Thirty years passed before it was accepted, in West Germany and elsewhere, that the Roma (Germany's Gypsies) had been Holocaust victims. And, similarly, it took thirty years for the West German state to admit that the sterilisation of Roma had been part of the 'Final Solution'.Drawing on a substantial body of previously unseen sources, this book examines the history of the struggle of Roma for recognition as racially persecuted victims of National Socialism in post-war Germany.Since modern academics belatedly began to take an interest in them, the Roma have been described as 'forgotten victims'.This book looks at the period in West Germany between the end of the War and the beginning of the Roma civil rights movement in the early 1980s, during which the Roma were largely passed over when it came to compensation. The complex reasons for this are at the heart of this book.

Abstract

The main issues arising from the encounter between Roma people and surrounding European society since the time of their arrival in Medieval Europe until today are discussed in this work. The history of their persecution and genocide during the Nazi era, in particular, is central to the present volume. Significantly, some authors sought to emphasize the continuing history of prejudice and persecution, which reached a peak during the Nazi era and persisted after the war. Current questions of so...

Abstract

The book presents the catalogue of Hispanic doctors in Civil and Canon Law graduated at the University of La Sapienza in Rome from 1549 to 1774. It also includes a list of Portuguese graduates. In La Sapienza, contrary to what has been maintained by many scholars, hundreds of foreign students received their doctorate degrees in Civil and Canon Law. The book, after a presentation of the College of Consistorial Lawyers and the Professors of the Faculty of Civil and Canon Law, emphasizes the international character of the doctoral students and focuses on Spaniards. Decisive contributions can be made going through the list of graduates, supervisors, examiners and witnesses, not only to the identification of Hispanic civilists and canonists, but also to the study of the academic, cultural and political networks, woven in Rome during the Modern Era.--------El libro presenta la nómina de doctores hispanos en leyes y cánones en la Universidad de La Sapienza de Roma desde 1549 hasta 1774.

Abstract

Eating Disorders have traditionally been considered apart from public health concerns about increasing obesity. It is evident that these problems are, however, related in important ways. Comorbid obesity and eating disorder is increasing at a faster rate than either obesity or eating disorders alone and one in five people with obesity also presents with an Eating Disorder, commonly but not limited to Binge Eating Disorder. New disorders have emerged such as normal weight or Atypical Anorexia Nervosa. However research and practice too often occurs in parallel with a failure to understand the weight disorder spectrum and consequences of co-morbidity that then contributes to poorer outcomes for people living with a larger size and an Eating Disorder. Urgently needed are trials that will inform more effective assessment, treatment and care where body size and eating disorder symptoms are both key to the research question.
