Abstract

​This Open Access book combines expertise in information literacy with expertise in education and teaching to share tips and tricks for the development of good information literacy teaching and training in universities and libraries. Abstract

The purpose of this Open Access compendium, written by experienced researchers in mathematics education, is to serve as a resource for early career researchers in furthering their knowledge of the state of the field and disseminating their research through publishing. To accomplish this, the book is split into four sections: Empirical Methods, Important Mathematics Education Themes, Academic Writing and Academic Publishing, and a section Looking Ahead. The chapters are based on workshops that were presented in the Early Career Researcher Day at the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-13). The combination of presentations on methodological approaches and theoretical perspectives shaping the field in mathematics education research, as well as the strong emphasis on academic writing and publishing, offered strong insight into the theoretical and empirical bases of research in mathematics education for early career researchers in this field. Based on these presentations, the book provides a state-of-the-art overview of important theories from mathematics education and the broad variety of empirical approaches currently widely used in mathematics education research. This compendium supports early career researchers in selecting adequate theoretical approaches and adopting the most appropriate methodological approaches for their own research. Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the value of the university armed service units – the University Officer Training Corps, University Royal Naval Units and University Air Squadrons. The units, many of which date back to the early 20th century, exist in order to provide students at UK universities with an experience of the British armed forces. Participation in the units is entirely voluntary, and there is no expectation that students will go on to join the armed forces on graduation, although a proportion of students each year do so.The Value of the University Armed Service Units brings together the results of a research project which explored what the value of the units might be to student participants, to graduates in civilian jobs who had the experience as students, to the armed forces, to universities whose students take part in the units, and to employers of graduates with service unit experience. This book draws on quantitative and qualitative research data to explore whether, how, and why the units have value to these different groups. Significant conclusions include the extent to which the units are able to assist students with the development of their transferable (graduate) skills; the potential significance of the units for future recruitment to the armed forces, particularly the Reserves; and the effect of unit experience in developing an informed understanding of the role and function of the British armed forces amongst the wider civilian population.

Abstract

Institutional Frameworks and Labor Market Performance produces an in-depth analysis of the functioning of various labor market institutions in both the USA and Germany. Particular emphasis is given to the substantial differences between the US and Germany in the ways important areas are regulated. The authors show that the impact of institutions on economic performance is ambivalent. They argue that in this sense, the decision is not one between regulation and deregulation but rather one between different degrees and forms of regulation.

Abstract

Comment devenons-nous touriste ? Peut-on repenser la mondialisation du tourisme au regard des arts de faire de celles et ceux qui l’inventent aujourd’hui ? Cet ouvrage se propose de répondre à partir du Việt Nam, pays encore pauvre qui enregistre une croissance significative du tourisme domestique depuis plus de vingt ans. Les observations in situ et les matériaux biographiques construits depuis 2005 à travers le pays permettent de comprendre comment les Vietnamiens apprennent aujourd’hui à voyager dans leur pays, où les richesses comme les inégalités s’accroissent depuis le Đổi Mới. Une analyse critique de la gestion politique et normative du tourisme domestique, d’une part par l’État vietnamien et d’autre part par les institutions mondiales du tourisme, complète ce travail de terrain, afin de traduire les rapports complexes que ces touristes entretiennent avec les systèmes de contraintes au sein desquels ils se meuvent. La colonisation comme le socialisme sont ici compris non seulement comme des périodes historiques, mais aussi comme un ensemble d’organisations, de valeurs, d’acteurs et de pratiques qui sont aujourd’hui mobilisés comme ressources afin de construire des mobilités touristiques. L’étude géographique qui en est faite révèle l’inventivité de leurs apparitions, réappropriations et multiplications, selon des hybridations et des circulations, parfois conflictuelles, de pratiques et d’imaginaires. Ce faisant, c’est une vision décentrée de la mondialisation touristique que propose cet ouvrage, permettant de mieux comprendre toute la complexité avec laquelle se reconfigurent les rapports de pouvoir au sein des sociétés postcoloniales.
