Abstract

Efficient inbound networks in the European automotive industry rely on a set of different transport concepts including milk runs - understood as regularly scheduled pickup tours. The complexity of designing such a mixed network makes decision support necessary: In this book we provide definitions, mathematical models and a solution method for the Milk Run Design problem and introduce indicators assessing the performance of established milk runs in relation to alternative transport concepts.

Abstract

"Supply-chain preparedness means to design inter-organisational structures, to organise supply-chain resources, and to plan and train to ensure efficient response if this is called for. Acknowledging that supply chains are made up of two or more organisations, and that interaction describes relations between two or more actors, the purpose of this research is to explore whether the introduction of the concept of interaction (samhandling) to supply-chain thinking adds to our understanding of efficiency and the effectiveness of logistics preparedness. We position our work along three dimensions: a profit – non-profit classification, a descriptive – normative dichotomy, and a micro – macro continuum. Information was retrieved both through semi-structured interviews and by studying secondary sources. Interaction and preparedness is assessed through an empirical case: the operation Atalanta. By applying interactional indicators, enablers and barriers to relationship success can be studied at both micro, meso, and macro levels. Without understanding the mechanisms leading to interactional competence, success (or the lack thereof) in supply-chain preparedness is difficult to address properly. Thus, managers need to assess the interactional constructs at all levels when planning and training for preparedness."

Abstract

Companies with high-performing supply chains enjoy essential competitive ad- vantages. However, supply chain management faces an environment of rising risk that endangers these competitive advantages. One of the reasons is to outsource parts of their business. This bears the risk of significantly increased lead times and lead time variability. It is the impact of lead time variability on inventory management that is the central aspect of this book. It describes a mathematical model for dual sourcing with two reorder points, shows the deviation between stochastic and deterministic calculations in a sensitivity analysis, and investigates different relaxations of a traditional dual-sourcing policy.

Abstract

Ein entscheidender Erfolgsfaktor jeder Supply Chain ist das adäquate Design ihrer Leistungserstellungsprozesse. Da diese Prozesse regelmäßig durch einen hohen Grad an Komplexität gekennzeichnet sind, stellt deren Gestaltung eine große Herausforderung dar. In dieser Forschungsarbeit wird deshalb die Frage behandelt, wie komplexe Leitungserstellungsprozesse einer Supply Chain effektiv und effizient verbessert werden können. Dazu wird eine systematische Vorgehensweise für die Analyse und Bewertung von Supply Chain Prozessen vorgestellt und im Rahmen einer Fallstudie auf eine reale Logistikkette in der Elektronikindustrie angewandt. Bei der Prozessanalyse wird eine Reduktion der Komplexität durch eine Kombination von analytischen Methoden und Simulation erzielt, sodass nicht nur die Validität der Ergebnisse, sondern auch die praktische Umsetzbarkeit gewährleistet ist. Die Bewertung von alternativen Prozessdesigns erfolgt multikriteriell und strategiebasierend, damit sowohl Zielkonflikte als auch die verfolgte Strategie der Logistikkette Berücksichtigung finden. Generell spielt die Wahl des marktbezogenen Produktionstyps (z.B. Make-to-Order, Make-to-Stock) bei der Verbesserung von Supply Chain Prozessen eine entscheidende Rolle. Daher wird auf diesen Aspekt besonders eingegangen, wobei der hybride Produktionstyp Make-to-Forecast in einem Supply Chain-Kontext in der Fallstudie implementiert wird.

Das Supply Chain Design als strategisches Supply Chain Management beinhaltet als wesentlichen Aspekt die Konfiguration der Supply Chain. Dabei sind die über eine Preisminimierung hinausgehenden Auswahlkriterien der Zulieferer sowie die aus dem langfristigen Planungshorizont der Fragestellung resultierende Unsicherheit geeignet zu berücksichtigen. In dieser Arbeit werden die vielfältigen betriebswirtschaftlichen Aspekte des Supply Chain Design umfassend diskutiert und ein Kriterienkatalog zur Auswahl von Zulieferern entwickelt. Die Unsicherheit wird mit Hilfe des neu entwickelten Konzeptes der Zielrobustheit abgebildet. Die Planungsentscheidungen im Rahmen des Supply Chain Design können durch das vorgestellte Vorgehen unterstützt und in ihren Konsequenzen quantifiziert werden.

Abstract

Supply chains consist of all processes which are needed in order to supply customers with the required products. Traditionally, supply chain management decisions are based on the economic performance of the involved parties. But in recent years, other criteria, such as quality, flexibility or the environment, have become important as well. Especially carbon emissions are high on the political agenda because they are considered to be a major cause of the greenhouse gas effect. In this work it is shown how the performance of supply chains can be evaluated considering both economic and environmental criteria. In particular, the work deals with dual sourcing in the context of the newsvendor model. The impact of environmental regulations (emission taxes and emission trading) on the decisions of companies is analysed.

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging network superstructure that will connect physical resources and actual users. It will support an ecosystem of smart applications and services bringing hyper-connectivity to our society by using augmented and rich interfaces. Whereas in the beginning IoT referred to the advent of barcodes and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which helped to automate inventory, tracking and basic identification, today IoT is characterized by a dynamic trend toward connecting smart sensors, objects, devices, data and applications. The next step will be “cognitive IoT,” facilitating object and data re-use across application domains and leveraging hyper-connectivity, interoperability solutions and semantically enriched information distribution.The Architectural Reference Model (ARM), presented in this book by the members of the IoT-A project team driving this harmonization effort, makes it possible to connect vertically closed systems, architectures and application areas so as to create open interoperable systems and integrated environments and platforms. It constitutes a foundation from which software companies can capitalize on the benefits of developing consumer-oriented platforms including hardware, software and services.The material is structured in two parts. Part A introduces the general concepts developed for and applied in the ARM. It is aimed at end users who want to use IoT technologies, managers interested in understanding the opportunities generated by these novel technologies, and system architects who are interested in an overview of the underlying basic models. It also includes several case studies to illustrate how the ARM has been used in real-life scenarios. Part B then addresses the topic at a more detailed technical level and is targeted at readers with a more scientific or technical background. It provides in-depth guidance on the ARM, including a detailed description of a process for generating concrete architectures, as well as reference manuals with guidelines on how to use the various models and perspectives presented to create a concrete architecture. Furthermore, best practices and tips on how system engineers can use the ARM to develop specific IoT architectures for dedicated IoT solutions are illustrated and exemplified in reverse mapping exercises of existing standards and platforms.
