Abstract

The conflict of priorities over the discovery of differential and integral calculus between Leibniz and Newton is one of the most violent and far-reaching conflicts in the history of science. It developed slowly - and interestingly- not as a result of a personal conflict between the two scientists, but rather as a result of a conflict that the employees of these men conjured up. The lectures documented in this volume deal with the development of the priority dispute up to its consequences for English analysis in the centuries after Newton. The volume follows the presentation of Thomas Sonar: The history of the priority dispute between Leibniz and Newton (Springer Spektrum 2016).

Abstract

Abstract

"This is the first full-scale biography, in any language, of a towering figure in German and European Romanticism: August Wilhelm Schlegel whose life, 1767 to 1845, coincided with its inexorable rise. As poet, translator, critic and oriental scholar, Schlegel's extraordinarily diverse interests and writings left a vast intellectual legacy, making him a foundational figure in several branches of knowledge. He was one of the last thinkers in Europe able to practise as well as to theorise, and to attempt to comprehend the nature of culture without being forced to be a narrow specialist. With his brother Friedrich, for example, Schlegel edited the avant-garde Romantic periodical Athenaeum; and he produced with his wife Caroline a translation of Shakespeare, the first metrical version into any foreign language. Schlegel's Lectures on Dramatic Art and Literature were a defining force for Coleridge and for the French Romantics. But his interests extended to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese literature, as well to the Greek and Latin classics, and to Sanskrit. August Wilhelm Schlegel is the first attempt to engage with this totality, to combine an account of Schlegel’s life and times with a critical evaluation of his work and its influence. Through the study of one man's rich life, incorporating the most recent scholarship, theoretical approaches, and archival resources, while remaining easily accessible to all readers, Paulin has recovered the intellectual climate of Romanticism in Germany and traced its development into a still-potent international movement. The extraordinarily wide scope and variety of Schlegel's activities have hitherto acted as a barrier to literary scholars, even in Germany. In Roger Paulin, whose career has given him the knowledge and the experience to grapple with such an ambitious project, Schlegel has at last found a worthy exponent. "

Abstract

Wilhelm Windelband (1848-1915) was a professor of philosophy during the German Empire, leader of the south-west German school of neo-Kantianism and an influential, if somewhat opinionated, public speaker.Neo-Kantianism was linked with opposition to the discipline of psychology and Windelband is noted in the history of science as nurturing a pronounced dislike of psychology, and of polemically expressing this opinion. The reality, presented here for the first time, looks different. He championed at an early stage the independence of psychology, worked on a book about psychology and gave more than twenty lectures about psychology. The institutional background concerning the difficult relationship between philosophy and psychology is examined, and shows that Windelband was not an isolated case in the history of philosophy.

Abstract

Wilhelm Grewe (1911-2000) began his career as a professor of international law under the Third Reich. In the immediate postwar period, he already strongly advocated a legal framework for relations between the Occupying Powers and Germany. In 1951, Konrad Adenauer entrusted him with the negotiations on the General Treaty on Germany („Deutschlandvertrag“).This case study, the first on Wilhelm Grewe, analyses his influence on the negotiations on the sovereignty and Western integration of the Federal Republic during the period from 1948-55. The study particularly highlights the practicalities of day-to-day operations and decision-making processes at the advisory level. It also assesses Grewe’s scope for action at the national and international levels. Another key element in evaluating his influence is the interaction between policy and international law.The author is Maître de conférences at the University of Nantes.

Abstract

After the change of power in Hamburg on March 8, 1933, the school administration was put under command of Karl Witt, a German nationalist and later Nazi. Converted to the National Socialist leadership principle, it was increasingly instrumentalized for the implementation of National Socialist educational concepts. These were mainly enforced by the persons who led the authority or dominated by informal power. The position of the four school-related officials in the power and governance system of National Socialism in Hamburg is therefore explained in this publication. Besides Karl Witt, three men were the protegés of the so-calld "Gauleiter" and "Reichsstatthalter" Karl Kaufmann: namely Wilhelm Schulz, Albert Henze, and Ernst Schrewe. Their proximity to the centre of power around Kaufmann led to very different formal and informal anchors in the mechanisms of the polycratic National Socialist system. The political pressure exerted by the head of the school administration on the schools intensified since the beginning of the war, culminating in the power and ruthless exercise of power by the National Socialist "Senatsdirektor" and "Gauschulungsleiter" Albert Henze.

Abstract

This book is about the idea of the university in modern Germany. Its primary focus is how the transformation of the Humboldtian tradition gave direction to debates around higher education. By combining approaches from intellectual history, conceptual history and the history of knowledge, the study investigates the ways in which Humboldt’s ideas have been appropriated for various purposes in different historical contexts and epochs. Ultimately, it shows that Humboldt’s ideals are not timeless – they are historical phenomena and have always been determined by the predicaments and issues of the day. Nevertheless, many of the key concepts and fundamental ideas have endured throughout the twentieth century, though they have been interpreted in different ways.
