Abstract

Racism as a historically grown power relation varies in its complex configurations, depending on social-political as well as local-historical contexts. This study examines how students deal with racism, with a particular focus on the contexts and institutions of academia. Due to the adaptive potential of current forms of racism, paradox spheres (of negotiation) open up to those affected by it: On the one hand, as academics, they are included, however, in a limited way, while on the other hand they remain excluded due to their ongoing experiences of being othered. The analyses show that the social and institutional handling of racism and experiences of racism are mostly tabooed or de-thematized. These structural circumstances fundamentally affect the students’ handling of racism.

Abstract

This is a book about the power game currently being played out between two symbiotic cultural institutions: the university and the novel. As the number of hyper- knowledgeable literary fans grows, students and researchers in English departments waver between dismissing and harnessing voices outside the academy. Meanwhile, the role that the university plays in contemporary literary fiction is becoming increasingly complex and metafictional, moving far beyond the ‘campus novel' of the mid-twentieth century. Martin Paul Eve's engaging and far-reaching study explores the novel's contribution to the ongoing displacement of cultural authority away from university English. Spanning the works of Jennifer Egan, Ishmael Reed, Tom McCarthy, Sarah Waters, Percival Everett, Roberto Bolaño and many others, Literature Against Criticism forces us to re-think our previous notions about the relationship between those who write literary fiction and those who critique it. Professor Martin Paul Eve is Chair of Literature, Technology and Publishing at Birkbeck, University of London. He is also the author of Pynchon and Philosophy (2014), Open Access and the Humanities (2014), and Password (2016).

Abstract

Abstract

This book contains the proceedings from Weaponising Speculation, a two-day conference and exhibition that took place in Dublin in March 2013. Weaponising Speculation was organised by D.U.S.T. (Dublin Unit for Speculative Thought) and aimed to be an exploration of the various expressions of DIY theory operative in the elsewheres, the shafts and tunnels of the para-academy. The topics covered all come under the welcoming embrace of speculation, spanning a broad range: from art, philosophy, nature, fiction, and computation to spiders, culinary cosmology, and Oscar the Grouch. The book itself aims to be more than just a collection of essays and catalogue of artworks, but also a documentation of the event as a whole. An object that both those present at the event and those who missed it would want to own — bringing something new to both sets of readers

Abstract

A Gender Budget is a strategic tool that provides an assessment of the political-economic and financial decisions of public administration from a gender-sensitive perspective. Its main goal is to support a more efficient, transparent, and equitable, management of resources. The first Gender Budget of the Università degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II” (UNINA) was realized within the framework of the European-Union funded GENOVATE research project: Transforming Organizational Culture for Gender Equality in Research and Innovation. It consists in a thorough context analysis of the University enrolment and career policy outcomes, encompassing students, academic, technical and administrative staff, which results in a detailed map of the still relevant gender gap dimension in the institution.Raw data and their focused analysis show how cultural and structural barriers contribute to women dropping out of university at the very beginning of scientific careers (i.e. the so-called ‘leaky pipeline’ phenomenon). Due to horizontal and vertical segregation mechanisms, some disciplinary fields and academic positions still remain dominated by one gender. It is the authors’ hope that Gender Budgeting may become a well-established practice at UNINA, and may support transformative actions and inspire gender-mainstreaming institutional policies.GENOVATE is a project funded by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), under the Science in Society grant programme (SiS 2012 2.1.1-1).This volume was co-funded by the European Union.

Abstract

Feminist scholarship is sometimes dismissed as not quite ‘proper’ knowledge – it’s too political or subjective, many argue. But what are the boundaries of ‘proper’ knowledge? Who defines them, and how are they changing? How do feminists negotiate them? And how does this boundary-work affect women’s and gender studies, and its scholars’ and students’ lives? These are the questions tackled by this ground-breaking ethnography of academia inspired by feminist epistemology, Foucault, and science and technology studies. Drawing on data collected over a decade in Portugal and the UK, US and Scandinavia, this title explores different spaces of academic work and sociability, considering both official discourse and ‘corridor talk’. It links epistemic negotiations to the shifting political economy of academic labour, and situates the smallest (but fiercest) departmental negotiations within global relations of unequal academic exchange.
