Abstract

In this work, new concepts of body-matched antennas for microwave medical applications were developed, where the antennas are placed directly on or in the human body. Two types of antennas were designed - on-body matched antennas for diagnosis and implantable antennas for data telemetry with the main focus of miniaturization yet maintained a high radiation performance. The applicability of the antennas was verified using a medical imaging system for the detection of hemorrhagic stroke.

Abstract

In this thesis methods are presented to optimize the radiation characteristic of holographic antennas for the usage with frequency-modulated radar modules (FMCW principle). This combination allows the simultaneous measuring of distance and angular position to targets within a scenario, due to the frequency-scanning property of this antenna type. This work focuses on the design of the integrated, holographic antennas and their optimization in terms of important system parameters.

Abstract

This work focuses on the analysis and design of multiple element antennas (MEA) and their interaction with the propagation channel. In particular, attention is given to urban channels and how its information throughput, i.e. capacity, can be improved. With this in mind, this work extends an existing network model of the communication system in order to reduce computation time, investigates the communicational limits of MEA systems and proposes a synthesis method for capacity maximization.

Abstract

The linear and nonlinear resonance behaviour of optical antennas (metallic nanostructures showing resonance behaviour at optical frequencies) made of gold and aluminum using electron-beam lithography is investigated. Specifically, it is of interest how the emission behaviour is changed by the coupling of two antenna arms via a small gap. Experimental techniques applied include dark-field spectroscopy and two-photon luminescence.

Abstract

The goal of this work is the introduction of efficient antenna structures on the basis of the requirement of different microwave imaging methods; i.e. quantitative and qualitative microwave imaging techniques. Several criteria are proposed for the evaluation of single element antenna structures for application in microwave imaging systems. The performance of the proposed antennas are evaluated in simulation and measurement scenarios.

Abstract

Core topics of the work are the vehicle access systems such as PAssive Start and Entry (PASE), Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) as well as Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Two goals are followed: the development of antennas and functionality analysis from RF (Radio Frequency) point of view and improvement of system parts. The overall objective of this work is to advance the state-of-the-art vehicular electromagnetic simulation taking into account the vehicle body and nearest surroundings.

Abstract

This work describes an optimization concept for mobile antenna systems. The so-called antenna synthesis determines optimal fixed antenna radiation patterns with the help of simulated or measured transmission channels. These radiation patterns increase the spectral efficiency and the reliability of the antenna system compared to conventional antennas with omnidirectional radiation patterns. Therefor the antenna systems are matched as best as possible to the predominant directions of the channel.

Abstract

This work introduces a novel wireless approach for the data transmission within automotive battery management systems. The main target is the reduction of the wiring harness deployed in a battery. The characteristics of the wireless in-battery channel are investigated by means of measurements and software-based electromagnetic simulations. Different types of antennas and frequency bands are analyzed. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by means of simulations and prototypes.

Abstract

In this work antenna systems for radar- and communication systems are presented. Additionally, a QFN-based packaging concept is evaluated. For communication systems the antenna systems are optimized for maximum radiated power to extend the transmit range. Therefore, a new concept for the power-combination of parallelized amplifiers is presented, where the signals of the amplifiers are combined in a single antenna element.

Abstract

Implantable microdevices, providing accurate measurement of target analytes in animals and humans, have always been important in biological science, medical diagnostics, clinical therapy, and personal healthcare. Recently, there have been increasing unmet needs for developing high-performance implants that are small, minimally-invasive, biocompatible, long-term stable, and cost-effective. Therefore, the aim of this Special Issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research and development contributions that address key challenges and topics related to implantable microdevices. Applications of primary interest include, but are not limited to, miniaturized optical sensing and imaging tools, implantable sensors for detecting biochemical species and/or metabolites, transducers for measuring biophysical quantities (e.g., pressure and/or strain), and neural prosthetic devices.
