Abstract

This spirited exploration of the interfaces between art and theory in the 21st century brings together a multidisciplinary range of viewpoints on their future. The authors examine contemporary visual culture based on speculative predictions and creative scientific arguments. Focusing on seven themes - Future Tech, Future Image, Future Museum, Future City, Future Freedom, Future History, and Future Future - the book shows how our sense of the future is shaped by a visual rhetoric of acceleration, progression, excess and destruction. The essays reflect collaborative work between the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam, De Appel Arts Centre, W139–Space for Contemporary Art, and the art magazine Metropolis M. Discussing provocative themes like future history and future freedom, ‘Facing Forward’ is an energetic look at how our visions of the future affect how we depict the world around us.

Abstract

Workers Leaving the Studio. Looking Away from Socialist Realism. catalogs the exhibition “Workers leaving the studio. Looking away from socialist realism.,” curated by Mihnea Mircan in the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana, Albania in 2015. According to Mircan, “The […] exhibition reflects on another projection machine, whose history and consequences, unlike cinema, are circumscribed by national boundaries, specific histories, and ideological configurations. The regime of production and representation of socialist realism radicalizes the violence that the creation of a new image does to its subject: it intensifies the fraught relation between refashioned representation and that which is represented. Its insistence on a particular, projective notion of reality is commensurate with the coercion of daily — cultural, social, emotional — life into a grid whose perspective lines and vanishing points carry heavy ideological charges. It enforces what it represents onto that which it represents, so that representation would replace reality.” Apart from a full documentation of the exhibition by photographer Marco Mazzi, the catalogue also features theoretical and art-historical contributions, both in English and in Albanian, on socialist realist art as developed in Albania under the communist regime, as well as texts highlighting contemporary attempts to display political realities through progressive artistic practices. Artists include: Santiago Sierra, Jonas Staal, Ciprian Mureşan, Irwin, Sarah Vanagt, and Armando Lulaj, with scholarly contributions by

Abstract

"Anyone who studies the history of modern art—in art museums, in the classroom, in art historical handbooks or specialist surveys—will soon be aware of a certain recurrent pattern governing the selection of objects and forming a certain type of narrative where the history of modern art is presented as a variety of different -isms that dissolve into each other in the coherent sequence that constitutes the history of modern art as modernism. But why is this pattern so similar in all different places and contexts? Is it possible to distinguish between the history of modern art and the history of modernism? And if so, when, where and how did modernism become synonymous with art of the modern era? With a dual perspective—regarding art as well as the discursive perception of art—Modernism as an Institution attempts to answer these questions by studying the frameworks for the institutional establishment, as well as the historiography, of modern art."

Abstract

For too long, the Earth has been used to ground thought instead of bending it; such grounding leaves the planet as nothing but a stage for phenomenology, deconstruction, or other forms of anthropocentric philosophy. In far too much continental philosophy, the Earth is a cold, dead place enlivened only by human thought—either as a thing to be exploited, or as an object of nostalgia. Geophilosophy seeks instead to question the ground of thinking itself, the relation of the inorganic to the capacities and limits of thought. This book constructs an eclectic variant of geophilosophy through engagements with digging machines, nuclear waste, cyclones and volcanoes, giant worms, secret vessels, decay, subterranean cities, hell, demon souls, black suns, and xenoarcheaology, via continental theory (Nietzsche, Schelling, Deleuze, et alia) and various cultural objects such as horror films, videogames, and weird Lovecraftian fictions, with special attention to Speculative Realism and the work of Reza Negarestani. In a time where the earth as a whole is threatened by ecological collapse, On an Ungrounded Earth generates a perversely realist account of the earth as a dynamic engine materially invading and upsetting our attempts to reduce it to merely the ground beneath our feet.

Abstract

ven if they are contradictory, the different senses give thickness and subtlety to the concept.            The journey of a notion in time and space then also contributes to broadening our understanding of a cultural history between universality and identity within the artistic diversity that characterizes modern Europe.

Abstract

LexArt. The words of painting is a dictionary of terms and concepts, which, from the artistic literature, in a synchronous approach of discourse and artistic practice, describe the painting as it is practiced in France, Germany, England and the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. These writings constitute the mental, intellectual and visual universe, which makes it possible to better apprehend the work of art, and shape the eye to better see. The purpose of this book is to highlight the stakes of uses resituated in different contexts in time and space, in a confrontation of ways of thinking, painting and watching. Seventy-seven essays address nearly two hundred and fifty notions. The articles respond to each other, and form an ensemble which, behind the alphabetical order of the dictionary, draws the contours of a new reading of the painting seen through the eye of the painter and the eye of the spectator. Indeed, the "speaking painting" does not only introduce the viewer into the painter's studio by showing him the "how to do", he introduces him into the painting itself, shows him what to see and how see.

Abstract

The collection of essays considers the art journal Propyläen that was edited by Goethe in the years between 1798 and 1800 for the first time as a whole. This enterprise, which was of great significance for the history of aesthetics, will be placed in a new light. The book situates the texts within their historical contexts, and thus provides a key resource for future research, for literary as well as art studies.

Abstract

[English version below]

For many centuries, new tricks have been devised to perfect the human body itself and in its artistic representation. The volume brings together texts that testify to this striving for beauty, from its beginnings to the end of the 18th century.
For his portrait of Helena, believed to be the most beautiful woman in the Ancient world, the Greek painter Zeuxis is said to have selected the five most outstanding virgins and to have painted the most beautiful body part of each model. According to this idea, transmitted by Ovid, perfect beauty can only be achieved through an artificial intervention. Art and personal hygiene are thus in an exciting interrelation. Because the basics and means of creating and enhancing physical beauty, which are available in both areas, overlap, complement and influence each other. The book illuminates this interrelation using selected basic texts, all in German translation, supplemented by well-founded comments on the historical context.

Abstract

[English version below]

With 43 source texts, starting with Leon Battista Alberti and reaching out into the late 19th century, the volume "Historienmalerei" gives a comprehensive overview of the theoretical history of this genre, which has been assigned the leading role in the hierarchy of image tasks. The text collection thus offers the opportunity to take into account the art-historical debates of the different epochs when interpreting the individual artwork and its historical position. All source texts are presented in their original language and a german translation. Interpretations in German only.
