Abstract

The Göttingen Observatory, workplace of the famous scholar Carl Friedrich Gauss, is an important architectural monument. In 2005, it has been reconstructed jointly by the Georg-August-University and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen. Since then it serves as a representative building for the University and is the seat of the Academy. With the use of the historic rooms for exhibitions this imposing building is open to the public for the first time. 200 years ago the observatory represented the recent scientific findings of its time and moved the University of Göttingen into the leading group of the foremost research institutions in Europe at this time. Also due to its architecture it has been a big leap for Georg Heinrich Borheck, architecture of the University of Göttingen. The war of the Napoleonic era disrupted the attempt of Borheck to publish his description of the construction of the Göttingen observatory in 1805. But his writing is still relevant today and will be finally published with this band for the first time accessible to a wide public. It shows the principles on which public buildings were designed then, explains the importance of the construction in art- and science-historical perspectives and informs on the plans for the restoration of the observatory in a separate article and in the preface by the President of the Georg-August University Prof. Dr. Dr. hc Kurt von Figura.

The third edition of this indispensable book in radio interferometry provides extensive updates to the second edition, including results and technical advances from the past decade; discussion of arrays that now span the full range of the radio part of the electromagnetic spectrum observable from the ground, 10 MHz to 1 THz; an analysis of factors that affect array speed; and an expanded discussion of digital signal-processing techniques and of scintillation phenomena and the effects of atmospheric water vapor on image distortion, among many other topics.With its comprehensiveness and detailed exposition of all aspects of the theory and practice of radio interferometry and synthesis imaging, this book has established itself as a standard reference in the field. It begins with an overview of the basic principles of radio astronomy, a short history of the development of radio interferometry, and an elementary discussion of the operation of an interferometer. From this foundation, it delves into the underlying relationships of interferometry, sets forth the coordinate systems and parameters to describe synthesis imaging, and examines configurations of antennas for multielement synthesis arrays. Abstract

This thesis studies the development of LEKID arrays for the use in a mm-wave camera for the IRAM 30m telescope. This includes the design and fabrication of the superconducting microresonators, the modeling and optimization of the mm-wave coupling to the detector and the characterization of the arrays at low temperatures. The results obtained brought IRAM to test a prototype instrument at the telescope, where first astronomical results have been achieved, which are also presented in this work.

Abstract

Este escrito pseudoeratosténico que se traduz nesta publicação retrata um grupo de episódios que não se limita a 12 constelações. Tampouco discorre acerca de influências/condicionalismos deterministas sobre eventualidades e comportamentos diários, mensais ou anuais das criaturas terrenas da Época Alexandrinista. Embora não se trate de um tratado astronómico e o estilo prime por um carácter simples e sucinto, muito há para descodificar nos pouco mais de quarenta episódios. De conotações astronómicas, apresenta-se como um exercício de aproximação, ao proporcionar ao recetor explicações de algo visível, mas não atingível - as constelações, através de imagens do saber comum, radicadas em cenas e aspetos mitológicos. Ademais, são vastos os topoi desenvolvidos, como philia, traição, cólera, justiça, crime e castigo, reverência, eponímia, etiologia, metamorfose, mitologia.

Abstract

Pseudo-Proklos' Sphaera (Σφαῖρα) ist eine griechische Einführung in die Astronomie, die ursprünglich von dem Stoiker Geminos (Εἰσαγωγὴ εἰς τὰ φαινόμενα) aus dem 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. stammt, jedoch im späten 15. Jahrhundert dem Neoplatoniker Proklos zugeschrieben wurde. Am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts erschienen Übersetzungen und Kommentare des Textes in 23 Handschriften und 92 Druckausgaben verschiedener Sprachen. Obwohl zu dieser Zeit bekannt war, dass der Text nicht von Proklos stammt, wurde er weiterhin in ganz Europa unterrichtet und übersetzt. Die weite Verbreitung des Textes liegt nicht nur in der Bekanntheit des Namens Proklos begründet, sondern unterstreicht auch die große Bedeutung seines Inhalts.Dieses Buch kontrastiert die Sphaera des Pseudo-Proklos mit dem aus dem 14. Jahrhundert stammenden astronomischen Standardlehrbuch für Astronomie - der Sphaera des Johannes de Sacrobosco. Die Verwendung der Sphaera fand bevorzugt an europäischen Universitäten, Hochschulen und Schulen statt, weil sie kürzer und elementarer war als der Text des Sacrobosco und weil die einfache griechische Syntax auch zum Unterrichten der griechischen Sprache verwendet werden konnte. Als griechisches Lehrbuch wurde die Sphaera zusammen mit verschiedenen Textgattungen wie Abhandlungen und Gedichten zur Astronomie gedruckt und insbesondere in humanistischen Zentren um Erasmus und Melanchthon verbreitet. Diese Textausgabe von Pseudo-Proklos' Sphaera enthält eine detaillierte Beschreibung des Inhalts, verfolgt ihre Verbreitung und stellt sie in einen zeitlichen Zusammenhang. Der Anhang enthält Transkriptionen und Facsimiles der ältesten griechischen Handschrift, des ältesten griechischen-lateinischen Druckes, eine deutsche Übersetzung des griechischen Textes und Paraphrasen der lateinischen frühneuzeitlichen Kommentare.

Abstract

This book summarizes the science to be carried out by the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array, a major ground-based gamma-ray observatory that will be constructed over the next six to eight years. The major scientific themes, as well as core program of key science projects, have been developed by the CTA Consortium, a collaboration of scientists from many institutions worldwide.CTA will be the major facility in high-energy and very high-energy photon astronomy over the next decade and beyond. CTA will have capabilities well beyond past and present observatories. Thus, CTA's science program is expected to be rich and broad and will complement other major multiwavelength and multimessenger facilities. This book is intended to be the primary resource for the science case for CTA and it thus will be of great interest to the broader physics and astronomy communities.
